5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Sound

I have wanted a rain drum for quite awhile, so when I saw this one I snapped it up. My son, who is a music educator, immediately had to play it with the mallets, which also makes a great sound. You must put this under something that is collecting water and sending it down in heavier drops. I have mine sitting underneath the picture window where it gets the heavier drops from the eaves. I love to listen to the rain, and this sound is just adding another soothing layer to the experience. Perfection!

I got this for my grandmother. All of her friends play musical instruments and she doesn't. She's a gardener and a good one at that.
I wanted to get something for her garden that made it musical.

She loves it and is going to upgrade our pond area to include it.
I told her that she now has an instrument to play when her friends play. I haven't seen her smile that wide in a long while.

Family stories aside, I will give a heads up, the water needs to heavily hit the rain drum to make a louder tone. I was hoping her watering would be enough but unfortunately it isn't, and we have to set up something to it can play louder.
It may be kinda quiet if you intending it to be a in the garden while watering kind of thing. Maby that was just my idea of it.

Highly recommend still though. Makes me want to get more of various tones for her garden.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sounds lovely but Rain doesn’t make it play

I have several tongue drums but not this small so I thought it would be cute for the garden for rain to play, but it is too sturdy for rain to make a sound. It comes with mallets, song book, instructions, stickers and finger picks. It does sound nice when played, just not what I thought it was. I’ll just add it to my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sounds beautiful!

I don't plan to use this in the rain, so I only tried it out inside the house, with the mallets, but it sounds great! It's also a nice color, and it came with a bag that's big enough to hold both it and the mallets. You can take the stopper in the bottom out to make it louder, if you want.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun drum (in no particular key from factory)

I'm rating this a bit more as what it's listed as ("Rain Drum for Outside Garden") more so than as a musical instrument. Now it does come kitted up as the latter, with a carrying bag and two decent little rubber mallets, a little hunk of plastic for resting them on, extra stickers for re-labelling the notes, and a book with instructions and beginner music.

Now the instructions do include tips for if you want to tune it down (by filing away some metal) and they say they do ship it a little high since it's easier to lower the frequency than raise it. But mine is almost a quarter step higher than standard tuning would have it. The relative pitches form a major scale (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) which isn't quite as fun as the pentatonic one I have but allows a bit more songs.

Maybe some day I'll try tune it right but it does sort of sing a bit in the rain under a gutter or spriit nkler and maybe that's enough. It's certainly a step up from a toy and I have mixed feelings about leaving it outside (especially since we don't get rain often enough for it to feature much…). It is painted/coated thoroughly inside and out **after** the initial cutting of the tabs and so should hold up pretty well to the weather I'd expect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mine works great !

I have been waiting for rain here in the Ohio Valley to review this Rain Drum, and it seems to be on strike this year. 2024 is the year of the dry here.
So......we improvised. I had my assistant (WIFE!) strategically "drip" water onto the Rain Drum using a specially designed scientifically accurate "rain simulator". (plastic bottle with holes painstakingly drilled into the lid) Since we couldn't properly simulate rain drops falling from miles up in the air, we used special "heavy water" to take the place of rain drops.
The result was far better than I expected. (see video, make sure to turn up volume)
I had to warn my wife to stop playing actual music due to copyright infringement laws, so she improvised the tune(s) you are hearing.
I noticed that the water wasn't draining (duh) so I removed the plug from the bottom and the Rain Drum actually sounded better.
If it should ever rain here again, I'll be sure to position the Rain Drum to catch some tunes!
Recommended.
