5.0 out of 5 stars A great violin kit with extras
Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2020
Having been without a violin for many years, I decided to purchase this set. It's a complete kit-- it comes with the violin and a custom cloth-covered hard case, two bows, rosin, a digital tuner, a padded wood shoulder rest, and two sets of strings, (one of which was already installed on the violin).

I was definitely impressed with the violin itself. There's an ample amount of lacquer over the wood with no drips or missing sections and the f-holes were cut and sanded correctly - an issue that I've had with previous purchases from other companies. It has a warm, rich sound and I have no complaints about its sonic qualities or craftsmanship.

The bridge was neatly tucked behind the tailpiece and wrapped in paper, likely to prevent damage to the finish during shipping. It's an easy installation but if you're looking for perfect tuning, you'll want to take it into a shop anyway. The shoulder rest installs easily and I appreciate the support from the wood base, having used a sponge rest previously. The ends are covered in rubber to prevent scratching the finish and the part of the rest that touches your shoulder is padded. It won't fit in the case with the rest installed so I leave it in the outer pocket along with the extra strings. It has two thumbscrews that allow for quick installation and removal.

There's a small compartment above the violin that easily stores rosin and the tuner with some room to spare. It has an internal spring so it will easily remain shut during transit and closes automatically. The violin itself fits within a molded section in the shape of the body and the interior lining is all faux velvet. There's room for both bows in the lid of the case and they fit securely with a plastic anchor that turns out of the way when you want to retrieve one-- they're manufactured in a manner that allows the mechanism to lock in place when the bow is stored. For removal, they lift easily then turn, allowing the bow to be retrieved. I particularly like this design because they won't come loose as the case moves. I also appreciate the second bow as a bonus! No issues with the bows themselves; they were ergonomically constructed as one would expect, held tension adequately and played just fine.

The tuner supports several instruments and includes a violin-specific mode. There's a single button on it to change modes that can be held to turn it on and off, as well as a backlight in the display. It recognizes the proper notes for standard tuning with a number to indicate the string, which is a handy feature. There's also rubber on the clamp rather than being hard plastic, preventing finish scratches.

This is a complete violin kit plus an extra set of strings and an extra bow, which is a great value for the money. It's as easy as placing the bridge, tuning the strings, getting some rosin on that bow and you're in business!

5.0 out of 5 stars Edited Review, after a week of owning

The issue I gave an original 1-star was my fault and I was disappointed as I was excited for the Violin to arrive. My instructor agrees that for the price and bundle, it's a good deal. It's obvious not the best Violin, but it's great for students. The shoulder rest(?) is not the best quality, but that's not the important part of the entire bundle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner instrument to use at home. Not recommended for music lessons
Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2021
I purchased this instrument for my 5-year old daughter during the pandemic when we signed her up for online violin lessons (spring'2021). It sounds good and worked out perfectly during our time doing violin lessons over Zoom. The Zoom teacher was thousands of miles away, and either didn't care about, or didn't notice any issues with the size/quality/sound. So basically it got us through our first 6 months of home-based violin lessons. Then in fall'2021 my daughter started kindergarten at a big school where they offer in-person violin lessons with highly experienced music teachers. And this violin didn't even last 1 day in that environment. My daughter was sent home on day 1 with a laundry list of complaints about this instrument, and the teacher even called it a "VSO" (i.e. violin-shaped object). She demanded that we go to a local music store and rent a quality handmade instrument, which costs $700-$800 brand new. She also said that this violin was too big for my daughter, who is an average sized 5.5 year old. She recommended starting with a 1/8 size instead of 1/4. It turns out that renting an instrument from the local music store wasn't too expensive in the overall scheme of things ($20/month on a 9 month contract). We gladly did that, and the rental instrument also came with unlimited size swaps and free adjustments, minor repairs etc. While the $800 violin we rented from the local store sounds marginally better than this one, I don't think it matters that much for an inexperienced beginner like my daughter. If her teacher didn't have such high expectations, I would've been happy to keep using this Amazon violin for another year or two until her skills have improved. But since we'll be at this school with this teacher for many years to come, I didn't want to say anything to question her judgement. So we switched to the higher end violin instead and keep this one as a backup. I still think this is a great purchase, but if you're buying it for your kid's music lessons, please consider whether the teacher would find it acceptable. The guy at the music store told me that this is a common story, and many teachers will simply refuse to teach with Amazon violins. Another thing to consider is that the instrument you rent from a local store comes fully set up, whereas this Amazon violin needs to be "assembled" (i.e. you have to position the bridge correctly, put in the strings, tune the strings, rosin the bow etc). Depending on your experience with violins, this can take up a significant amount of time. As a first time violin dad, I spent several hours learning how to string a brand new violin from YouTube videos, and also broke two strings in the process. It's nice to learn how to do that kind of stuff for your kid, but some parents may prefer to let a local shop employee take care of such things.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Quality
Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2024
Instrument continually goes out of tune, sounds cheap, overall it is terrible quality. Don't waste your money on it. The dots for finger placement are not in the correct positions. Shoulder rest is super thin, again terrible quality. The extra stings are not labeled so unless you know how to play the violin you would not know where to put the string replacements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginner. It stays in tune and is playable, unlike other cheap plastic ones

The media could not be loaded.
Absolutely love it! I had ordered about four different beginner violins just to check them all out and see which one would be a good fit for my 7-Year-Old. Most of them were not even made with real wood and they did not stay in tune very well so they were more or less a toy. This is actually a real instrument that you can play and tune and intonate and it stays in tune. That is what you need when a child is figuring out if they want to learn an instrument or not. If you get too cheap of an instrument, it won't actually be playable and they will get discouraged, but you don't want to drop a pile of cash on a Stradivarius or something like that so this is the perfect alternative. Extremely happy with this purchase and the quality of the instrument for the price.
