5.0 out of 5 stars High Quality Recorder at a Reasonable Price!

Wonderful recorder! It is well made and of good quality material. It has good tone quality and easy to play. Fingering chart is included, so it makes it easy to learn on your own. This would make a good instrument for a child to learn from a music teacher at school or at home with the assistance of a parent, and as an adult, it was easy for me to learn on my own. A very easy instrument to learn to play and the quality is excellent and at a reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vary decent instrument.

This is a nice looking recorder about on the par with most inexepensive instruments. It is two piece meaning that the mouthpiece comes off in a separate part. More expensive recorders are generally three piece and this seems to be for two reasons other than the fact that, in larger types recorders, it makes storage more convenient. Three piece recorders are sometimes played without the bottom hole piece on though I do not know the reason one should do this. It basically becomes a different flute if you do that. The second reason is to adjust the position of the bottom hole for the little finger that plays it but I sometimes find this more of a nuisance than a help and it will not benefit a child much since it is one more piece to lose.

The recorder joint is very loose and needs joint, or cork grease. Some recorders give you a tiny container of "cork grease" which seems to be a mixture of paraffin and probably a small amount of petroleum jelly. Just pick up a lip balm or chapstick at your convenience store. I use my wife's Bert's Bees which is in a tiny tin and which I believe is for chapped lips.

Plastic recorders can be cleaned by washing them in warm, not hot water, and liquid dish washing soap.

Many recorders come with a cleaning rod. This did not but if you check the Dollar Tree you may, on occasion, find a truly cheap and bad recorder with a rod. They also sell cleaning rods on Amazon but you can improvise something. On the rods I have accumulated on my huge collection of both cheap and pricey recorders, I use the sponge you occasionall find as a flat sheet used in packing items or even put on top of candies. Cut this in small rectangles and slip into the slot of the cleaning rod. Scrub inside with the soapy water mentioned above.

The bottm hole of all recorders, the note played when all the holes, including the hole beneath the recorder, are fully covered, is the Key note of the instrument. Soprano recorders such as this one are in the Key of "C". All my recorders alternate between "F" and "C'" as the stizes go up.

The hole under the recorder is an octaving hole. For the lower sounding notes it is fully covered. Then there is one note with all the holes uncovered. Then you half cover the octaving hole to play higher sounding notes. Charts will explain this and, though it is one of the hardest parts about playing the instrument it will eventually become automatic.

Your child will learn in school that the first thing to avoid is sticking the whole mouthpiece in her or his mouth like a police whistle. Various ways of putting it to your lip will produce various sounds as will various air flows. The tongue can be used to break the tone into separate notes as well as the fingers. All these techniques produce various effects as does the amount of air and even the amount you open the interior of your mouth. You can even sort of "talk" while keeping your lips sealed and blowing.

Your kid should learn some of this stuff in school if they take recorder classes. Have fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleek Design, Beautiful Tone

Our 8 year old loves this recorder! It has a nice, clean design and a beautiful tone. We have purchased other brands of recorders, but this is by far our favorite (no squeaking or squawking sounds from this instrument!). The plastic sleeve keeps it protected, and it even survived an accidental drop onto the wood floor. I would absolutely buy this recorder again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks Nice, Fair Price

I ordered this for my daughter as she is learning to play the recorder in school and wanted to practice at home. This recorder came in pink, her favorite color, so that strongly influenced this purchase. The recorder is sturdy and plays ok. We also ordered a wooden one from another seller, and to me the wooden one gives a warmer tone, at least as warm as a recorder can give, as they are kind of an irritating sounding instrument. However, the price is fair and it looks nice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very durable and cute to boot!

Very well made and good, school grade quality! Very pretty and higher end lining than other recorderes! My daughter loves the color and gets many compliments on it. Super glad it came with a clear envelope style case.

3.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, good ergonomics, but kind of a disappointment.
Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024
    Unboxing:
It comes in a translucent recorder bag, and had a fingering chart/documentation with it.
    Build-Quality Impressions/Ergonomics:
It looked solid, and the joints were tunable. The design was simple, kind of like a peripole, and sometimes, kids like that "unusualness". The vibe was a bit like "sports car" if that makes sense.
I did like how the pinky hole was raised. That does seem to help kids cover the hole.
    Sound:
This is the first disappointment. It doesn't sound bad like a walmart/dollar store recorder, but it also doesn't sound great. There are plastic recorders like the Yamaha, Aulos, or even the Peripole that sound better than this recorder. There is resonance in the sound, but it's resonance due to shrillness of the sound. Some people like it, I don't.
    Ease of playing:
This recorder pops the notes out easily, except for one note, the High A-flat (fingered, Half-Thumb, LPointer, LMiddle and RPointer). That note is the only one that requires a really low breath pressure compared to the rest of the recorder, hence the breath curve is not smooth at all. That drives me nuts. I know high notes are unimportant to classroom recorders, but as music teachers, don't we want to give our students the best recorder out there?
It really seems that Nuvo put more effort into the looks of the recorder than the sound and playability of the recorder, and that's sad.
    Intonation:
Not bad, the notes seemed to be in-tune with each other, and the tuner also showed that they were. The chromatics were in-tune, but I think it could be better.
One more negative thing, it is not specified if this recorder is Baroque or German Fingered. I am a Baroque Finger player, and I didn't like having to keep my fingers crossed, hoping I ordered a Baroque recorder. The pictures are a bit inconsistent as some have shown a German-Fingered recorder, others have shown a Baroque-Fingered recorder. Why can't Nuvo be transparent about that with this recorder?
I kept the review at 3 stars because I had to give credit where it's due. This recorder can work as a classroom recorder, but there are still better recorders out there.

Works great. Sounds good. I'm no professional recorder player, clearly, but it's easy to play and fits the bill for a cheap recorder to learn on. I like the fact that it's a subdued color.
