5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Solid Basic 5 String Bass
Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2014
I played an upright Kay bass professionally and have standard Fender 4 string basses, etc. and wanted to experiment with a 5 string setup without spending a ton of money. This Dean bass is GREAT. The body is sculpted at the tummy and right arm so the edges of the guitar doesn't cut into you. The neck and fingerboard feels very good. For most bass player support roles, this bass is good enough for any gig. However if you are a bass soloist with complicated riffs and intonation needs, you will need a higher end bass with more pickups or hook this up to a Toneworks or equivalent to shape your sound.

Overall this is a very good solid basic 5 string bass for the beginner or advanced player....would make a good travel or gig situation where your equipment might get bumped around or dinged. At this price point, this is the best bass around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice bass...terrible packaging.
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2013
Update #1 (03/26/2013): New bass arrived! Undamaged! But the washers around the tuning nuts were rattling this time...whatever. I'll get around to seeing if it even is something that should be addressed by my own tools (it probably is.) Since I can't leave well enough alone, I had ordered D'Addario ECB81-5 5-String Bass Guitar Strings, Light, 45-132, Long Scale, because I had heard all kinds of good things about flat wound strings. This is going to turn into a slight meta-review, so bear with me.

The strings feel like heaven. If you've ever played with the stock strings on a (cheap? are the strings that come stock on this only found on cheap basses? Is that a common thing? wtf are those strings even called?!) bass, then you're familiar with the feeling of crazy ridges on the fatter strings. Flat wound strings do away with that - it's one smooth string the whole way down. Since everyone is currently sleeping, I have not been able to hear how they sound amplified, but it does definitely sound less harsh/metal.

The problem is that the particular strings I chose appear to have too fat of a gauge on the B string (I'm learning! yay!) - the fabric that wraps the last part of the string before the round thingy that keeps it from going through the bridge was too thick to actually fit through the hole in the bridge, which meant I had to perform surgery to the instrument with a rotary tool.

In retrospect, this was probably overkill. The string itself also appears that it is too fat to fit into the stock ridges on the bridge and the nut. On the bright side, it's a $140 bass, and I went into this fully expecting to replace almost every part at some point in the name of Science.

For those of you that are not contemplating this purchase based on how you can frankenstein this thing, it sounds perfectly fine stock. But seriously, your fingers will thank you if you can acquire a set of flat wound strings that fit correctly.

    Original Review:
I'm a seriously novice bass player, so don't expect me to say anything useful regarding how this plays/sounds compared to a better/worse product; this is a bass. It makes bass noises. It appears to hold a tune, even though it was damaged during shipping.

If you read any reviews for any other bass on Amazon, you'll likely see at least one review lamenting the lack of package protection, and this is not any different - the knob nearest to the bridge was hit so hard during shipping that it broke the body of the bass in this area. This knob no longer turns, but the knob above it does. I was able to hook the bass up to my PA system and make even louder bass noises, so at least there's that. Everything else appears to be where it should be, and worked as expected. Since I just received the bass today, I'll be updating the review once my replacement gets here - hopefully without damage this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Value Bass
Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2014
So I recently had won $250 dollars off a lottery ticket and had considered buying a bass. I looked at my options at that budget. I wanted a bass that had 5 strings just so I didn't have to worry about tuning down unless it falls into drop A (since chords aren't big in the bass part for most songs transposition was easy). I was torn between this and an Ibanez that cost $90 more. After receiving this, I think I made the better choice. Although it has only one pickup, the sound is solid and it has nice low-end growl. I can play things ranging from Slipknot to the Who without much time wasted, Honestly if you are looking to pick up playing bass or just want a 5-string, this is a fantastic bang for your buck. It was shipped double-boxed and looked to be handled nicely, no damage I can tell. Also, the strings that the bass was shipped with sound surprisingly fresh as well.

    I finally have it!

My first one was damaged, and the knobs had broken through the body. I sent it back, and now a week later have one that's acceptable. The headstock is chipped, and the tone pot is wobbly, but I really don't feel like waiting another 4 or 5 days to have it replaced.

I've been playing bass off and on for 25 years. This would be my third 5 strong I've bought in those years.

First impressions: It has fast action, but needs to be set up. A lot of fret buzz, so the truss rod needs adjustment. The intonation is all off, but that's not all that big of a deal, as it will need adjustment anyway after adjusting the truss rod and adjusting the action to go with that adjustment.

If you take it to a shop to have these adjustments made, it'll cost some money. Or you can go to YouTube, and there are a lot of video tutorials on how to set it up. Just warning you, especially your first time, set aside an afternoon or evening for the setup.

Not sure if I'll have to replace the pot or not, but this could be another worry, especially for a beginner. More money, and/or time.

I really can't speak to how it sounds through an amp (or if it even works through an amp at the moment with the issue with the pot), as I don't own an amp at the moment. I do like the sound and sustain without the amp though.

All in all, I do love the bass, but am disappointed that out of the two that were sent to me, both were damaged/defective in one way or another. I'll update when I actually pull it apart to check out what kind of damage there is to the pot.

How is the pickup? I'm kind of worried about it just having the one and was wondering about the sound.
