I thought I would write a review on the Stagg BC300-N 4 string bass as it took me a bit of research online to find out anything about these as Stagg products are not well known in the US. I did find some favorable reviews from the UK and also found the website for Stagg Instruments which had some useful info. I ordered this item from Amazon and it was shipped by Music Factory Direct. It did ship faster than the 3-5 days stated by the shipper, in fact it was on its way to me a little more than a day after ordering. I was a bit nervous as it was sent via USPS, but no worries. It arrived in just a few days and about 5 days earlier than stated. The outer shipping carton was in PERFECT shape (I thanked the mail carrier personally-great job USPS!) The inner carton was padded adequately to keep it from sliding around and protected. The inner box (Stagg factory carton) was padded with foam inserts to protect the instrument. The bass was wrapped in a plastic bag with a lightly oiled parchment wrap over the strings (to protect from rust). After removing from all packaging bass looked to be in good shape however WAS NOT PLAYABLE out of the box. The bridge saddles were bottomed out and upon raising each saddle (with included allen key) it became quite obvious that an entire set up was needed. Apparently Music Factory Direct does not even open the factory box before shipping, which was quite obvious. I have been playing stringed instruments for close to forty years and fortunately have the skill and knowledge to make all the neccessary adjustments. The bass was in need of a substantial neck adjustment, action (bridge saddle adjustments, and intonation ( which surprisingly dialed in quite nicely. I left the action a little high as I was planning to change the factory roundwound strings out rather quickly. After about an hour and a half of tweaking it turned out to be a pretty solid low end instrument. The natural satin finish on the body is nice. The body is made of several peices of alder and has a slight (although cool) butcher block appearance. I wasn't expecting a two peice or even three peice body at this price. The satin finished maple neck (once adjusted properly) is smooth and easy to play. Fret work is surprisingly good. Tuning keys are low quality but do work. They have some back lash and the nylon bushings squeak a bit. Apply some silicone oil to fix squeaks. The pickups are most likely inexpensive ceramic but sound good. The bridge is adequate and all adjustment screws work. Tone and volume controls are quiet and function as expected. After a few days I put on a set of D'Addario medium tapewounds. Not only do these black strings look great with black hardware against natural finish but produce the warm mellow tones I was looking for. All in all I am pleased with this bass. It is nicer than the Ibanez basses I tried at Guitar Center at the same price point. I play mostly jazz, blues, and instrumental rock. I am mainly a guitarist and bought this bass primarily for home recording and to get back into playing bass again as I played bass semi-professionaly a couple of decades ago. The Stagg BC300-N is not in need of any immediate upgrades (barring a complete setup of course) but would be of interest to modders. The tuning keys, bridge, pickups and electronics could all be upgraded to make an extremely solid custom instrument for much less than an off the wall model with these kind of upgrades.
UPDATE: August 2013: Do Not Waste your money. I got rid of this bass several months ago. Electronics became very noisy, useless for recording. There are much better choices out there for similar or slightly higher price point.

I purchased this bass several months ago. The first one I received was damaged beyond repair and I sent it back. The second one I received was in perfect shape and I must say that I was greatly surprised. The fit and finish was way above par and only needed a few minor adjustments to make it play I like it. The neck is super comfortable and fast. The frets were finished nice and smooth and played without any fretbuzz. Overall I am pleased with this product and would recommend it to anyone who wants a good quality starter bass. For the money you can'y beat it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality tremendously drops either after years of manufacturing or new manufacturer altogether

First thing I have to say is that I was sorely disappointed with this axe. Back in 2008 I was gifted this guitar which was bought from a local music store. I absolutely LOVED it! It was such a solid and good sounding instrument. Not to mention it was gorgeous as well! Anyway, I quit playing bass and picked up other hobbies for a few years to shake things up and I ended up selling this guitar. BIGGEST MISTAKE here's why: the bass I got from the music store was amazing. Craftmanship was on point, it sounded good, my bandmates even loved it. However when I decided to start playing bass again after my hiatus it turned out that the store no longer sold Stagg instruments. I really wanted my favorite bass again so I ordered this one online from amazon. When I opened it and started playing it just didn't feel right. It felt a LOT cheaper than I ever remember my old one feeling like and no matter what I did adjustment wise the sound quality was just Sh-t!! Dead notes on every string from frets 5-7 depending on the day and fret buzz like a motherf---er. I hated playing it so much I just ended up quitting again and selling it for wayyyyy cheaper than what I paid because it really really really isn't worth 250$. Really. You can get a MUCH better guitar for the price from epiphone, ibanez, fender, etc. Stagg quality has just went to sh-t in the last few years! It actually makes me a little sad... I'm playing bass again, this time with much better guitars and equipment. I'll never play a Stagg again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's be realistic
Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2020
I've been playing this bass for several months now. Is it perfect? No, of course not. But let's be realistic... the Stagg is one of the least expensive fretless basses on the market. For me, it's just what I wanted... something to learn on without breaking the bank. I expect that one day I'll buy something better, but for now, it's a great fit.

A minor issue is the pickups. This may be something that's unique to my instrument, but when you tap the pickup housing with your finger, I hear a noise through my amp. That's not ideal, but it hasn't been a problem for me. I also suspect that the setup could be improved- i.e., intonation and string height- but it's perfectly playable out of the box.

I enjoy mine a great deal. If you think this will be identical to a Fender Jazzmaster, you'll most likely be disappointed, but if you want one of those, then quit whining and get out your wallet. If you're looking for a decent starter instrument at a reasonable price, then this is it. Good luck!
