5.0 out of 5 stars This Bass Is AWESOME! Donner Gives You So Much for Your Money!

Let me begin by saying I'm not a bassist; in fact, I'm not even a great guitarist, but rather an enthusiast who likes to experiment in his home studio. That being said, I purchased this for myself so I could lay down some rudimentary bass lines to glue together some song ideas ahead of someone else doing the real work, so take my comments in that context.

I have to say, I LOVE this bass! As an owner of 3 other guitars, I CAN recognize good build quality and this certainly exemplifies that. There isn't a single blemish on this thing--it's shiny, slick and pretty. It's also SOLID, but not overly heavy. I'd guess it weighs about 7 or 8 freedom units (pounds) and its center of gravity is probably about the fourth fret from the end of the neck, so there's an ever so slight tendency for neck dive, but that's without the friction of a strap, just me holding it against my stomach and playing (yes, there is a carved comfort scoop).

As it arrived, it was ALMOST in tune; the strings feel nice, well-coated so they're smooth with no biting. The tuners seem to work and one thing that actually surprised me is that it appears to have a bone nut--it's gritty, off-white and carved perfectly for each different string girth. The tuners are simple, but effective. At the other end, the bridge and saddles seem solid enough, though I'm not an expert, so I included a close-up picture for you to decide. The action is ever so slightly high due to my fingers being a just a bit shorter than average, but that's easily remedied. I included a pic of that, too, for your own reference.

The knobs for the pots offer a pleasant resistance--just enough to feel substantial. The knobs themselves are straight and are installed securely. The pickups seem to be seated adequately and overall; this thing feels solid and pleasant to hold, which is important--especially if you're going to be using this for more than a couple of minutes.

As for the playing, I like the classic P-Bass tone that this Donner provides; I ran this through my DAW and everything sounds good. Like I said, I'm not a professional bassist, but I was more than pleased with the sound I got. The strings stayed in tune and I had a great time. I'm not the next Michael Anthony or anything, but based on my experience as an incredibly mediocre guitarist, I'd say anyone else could probably get even more out of it.

I will admit to one thing being a slight demerit in the evaluation of this bass: there is a tiny (I mean almost imperceptible, but not quite) bit of fret sprout on about three of the frets, something that is easily addressed by anyone with a luthier's kit--which, as the owner of 4 guitars now, I happen to possess. Fixing those frets will require about 5 minutes of work.

The bundle includes a NICE, padded gig bag, a strap, a cable (which is surprisingly thick and deluxe-feeling) and an Allen wrench. The bass alone would have been a solid value, but with the added bundle, this is a home run for anyone who's a beginning/sometime/pro bassist (in need of an inexpensive backup). There are virtually no flaws and for the price, the potential downside is almost non-existent.

This Bass looks beautiful in finish. All frets are smooth, no work needed. Set up was spot on right out of the box. Good response from the pickups fothus price guitar. Nice thin, quality neck with action easy to play. No buzz or issues. Looking forward to some recording sessions with this ... would recommend for beginners or experienced players that want quality without the usual $$ hit. Enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a beginner bass
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2025
Of course, the guitar isn't set up so you will need to go to your local professional and spend some money to get things right. Our guy felt it was decent for a beginner and did his best to get it set up nicely, but he did have to do a lot of fret work before he was happy with the sound. Of course, he also completely restrung the instrument also. Anyhow, he was happy with the bass after he worked on it, my son was happy with the bass as he began to play it, and life was good in musician land.

For the price of the bass, the sound is really nicely rounded and sounds like a much more expensive instrument. The strap is crap and you will likely want to replace that asap. That being said, my son is a large man with a barrel chest and things like a good strap are very important to him.

Anyhow, so far, so good. More money has gone into it than anticipated, but I rather expect that from anything in musician land. It's always a journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is NOT Neck heavy
Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2022
Some reviewer claimed it was neck heavy. I found, it is NOT neck heavy, rather perfectly balanced whether on a strap, or on my knee. (My strap is leather though, and the body side is rather rough and grippy. So there is that factor)
I was reluctant when I read that "neck heavy" stuff, but glad I did not heed those words.
The Guitar IS on the heavy side, for sure though, (about 10 pounds.) So yes, compaired to a six string electric guitar it is heavier, and it's longer too. But it IS a standard full size electric BASS guitar, so, it is, what it is. Basses are bigger, heavier, and longer than six strings guitars, for sure. I am 6' and 190 lbs and no problem for me.

It's a fine instrument IMO. Well balanced. Just what I hoped it would be. I am having a lot of fun with it.

I have a little Fender, Frontman, 10G practice AMP ($80) and this bass just does not play so well on that, for me. I don't dare turn it up full blast on that little amp, for fear this bass might blow the speakers. This 10G works very well for my six string though. Nice and small. Sweet for 6 string guitars

A new FENDER BASS 40 AMP, that I ordered, arrived today though. ($200.). I DO like that 40 amp, for this bass.
Some reviews say that the Fender bass amp plays on six string guitars OK too. I have not found very true for me. It sounds too deep, but truthfully, I have not fooled around with it much with my 6 string, and the bass amp does have a lot of settings. So maybe, (??) but I am sure my Fender, 10G is great for my 6 string, so I doubt I'll mess around using that with my bass anymore

So anyway, I am in love with this Donner bass, so far. Everything works good, so far, for me. If I find anything negative about it later, I will come back and edit this review. 10/08/2022.

Our teen picked up playing the bass and it's been a great buy. Not only is it light enough for her to carry it around, it's also well made. It came with what you see on the description page.
