They are made for small hands (3-10 year-olds) and are not loud at all. There were three kids who each had a kalimba at the same time and it never became a problem. They were entertained and the older of the three asked me to buy them a larger one (which I did!) They are fairly easy to learn and the sounds are nice.
Get some for your kids before your next road trip and you will all have a much more pleasant trip!
