5.0 out of 5 stars Monster of an axe
Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2024
I love a heavy instrument, and this one isn't balsa wood for sure. I was greeted with a great figured top. Playability is outstanding, nice sustain and harmonics. I din't have to setup a thing out of the box. The electronics are quiet, effective EQ. With upgraded pickups and more finish detail(you can feel the grain edges here and there) Fend*r would have charged a couple grand for an instrument like this. What a great bargain and a perfect way to torture myself with a 6 string bass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value for the price.

I paid a little over 300 dollars for this, and for the price this is a great bass. My alternative choices had prices of 1200-1500 dollars. Sure, everything about those other basses is better, but for the price this bass gets the job done, and gets the job done well, without question. Neck through body construction and natural wood finish I love. I have 6 other basses and this is the only one that I do not even use a case even though it comes with a soft case. This is a very inexpensive bass that works. It would not be fair to compare this bass to others that are much more expensive. You want something better, then you are going to pay more for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a really nice fretless for the money, it's worth it!

I was reluctant to buy the less expensive sunburst model so I went up a notch for this one. Super glad that I did. It is a clean machine and possesses a quality feel and sound for a low price. I bought this to learn a new instrument, but I've played guitars and Chapman Stick for 40 years so I'm not exactly a beginner level test case. It's very heavy, but is comfortable to play sitting or standing. I will be switching to Flatwounds ASAP however to smooth out the sound and ease of the the fingering changes, more like an upright. That is a preference that is up to the player.
Note that the scale length is considered long/standard long at 35.5 inches to accommodate the intonation of the low B string. Triple check any strings that you buy to make sure they are not for a shorter scale - or extra long scale as they are meant for basses that load the string through the body of the instrument (they will break if they wind around the posts). The longer scale length means slightly longer note ranges on the fretboard, so if you have smaller hands consider a shorter scaled bass.
Overall this is a really good find. If you know what you're looking for, this might be a great find for you too. Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a beginner messing around in Rocksmith
Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2022
Over the COVID-19 Pandemic, I decided I was going to learn a musical instrument. I wound up getting a bass guitar (not this one) and fell in love. I am very much a hobbyist and mostly I just play along with Rocksmith.

Les Claypool and Jean Baudin are probably the two most influential bassists on my personal musical tastes and I've always had a passing interest in extended range instruments. It had been bouncing around in the back of my mind to try out an extended range bass as soon as I was presented with the opportunity. At an impulse trip to Guitar Center, I had the chance to try out an old, beat-up, used fretless 6-string bass and it was everything I had hoped it would be (including the very expensive price tag). So, I came back home and checked out what Amazon had to offer. I was eyeballing the Ibanez, but then I saw this one for $300 and figured that is probably about the cheapest I'd ever see a 6-sting fretless bass.

I've been playing this bass for 3-4 months now and I love it so much. I still mostly only play Rocksmith (if you're playing on PC, you can download custom songs that users have charted and some of them even have 6-string bass tracks hidden away as "Bonus Rhythm" or "Alternate Rhythm" guitar tracks - to trick Rocksmith into using all 6 strings even though the instrument is a bass). It also works great playing standard E-A-D-G and B-E-A-D 4-string songs. Sometimes I will tune the bass to B-D-E-A-D-G so that I can play both Standard E and Drop D tracks without retuning. I still have a lot of learning to do and my fingers need more time to figure out where all the notes are, but it is SO MUCH FUN TO PLAY.

I know some of the other reviews mention that the tone of this instrument is not very good. I don't really have anything to say one way or the other on that front, but if you're looking for something to play Rocksmith with, this will 100% do the trick. It even sounds pretty good to me in Session mode. I have no idea how much help the bass is getting from Rocksmith, but I don't think the tone is so bad that I would turn anyone away from this bass.

I think the only real negative I can think of about this bass is that it is HEAVY. I mean I knew it was going to be heavy, but I did not anticipate the amount of back and shoulder muscle I would have to build to use this thing. Be prepared to get real sore after using this monster for a while. Oh and I guess the construction around the tuning knobs isn't fantastic. Sometimes when I'm tuning the bass, I will twist the knob and the part that connects the knob to the guitar twists a little bit like it isn't flush with the wood. Continuing to turn the knob just a little further causes the string to "take" and it will adjust the tuning as expected, but this speaks to me of less-than-perfect construction techniques. It hasn't been an issue for me, just something to be aware of.

If you have been playing a 4-string bass, be prepared to make some adjustments. If you try to hold your fretting hand the same way you do on a 4-string, you'll probably end up hurting your wrist. It would be wise to look up a video or two on YouTube about how to use the instrument before jumping right in - just to avoid any possibility of injury.

If you do end up getting this bass, do yourself a favor and get some good flatwound strings to go along with it. I think before this bass, I had always just used whatever strings came with the instrument. This one, though, I decided to find out why people kept mentioning "flatwound" in a lot of the forum conversations I saw while researching basses. I got myself a set of D'Addario Nylon Tapewound Bass Strings and it feels like they were made for the bass. Bending the strings is so much less effort that I feel like I have a lot better control over the sounds that the bass is actually making. Now, when I go back and use my 4-string with the normal roundwound strings, it feels crazy how much effort I have to put in to manipulate the strings.

Bottom Line: This bass is great for beginners or anyone who wants to get the feel for a 6-string bass without breaking the bank. It works great with Rocksmith. I would probably want to get a better bass if I was actually recording music that I intended other people to listen to.

PROS:
-CHEAP
-Comes assembled and ready to play (well, you'll have to tune it)
-Works beautifully with Rocksmith
-Has 6 strings and no frets!
-Gets you the real deep wub wub

CONS:
-Heavy
-Construction probably isn't the best
-Tone may not be what you need

Why? Who was the genius who decided that? Certain areas on this bass buzz really loudly because of them. Otherwise great instrument for the price but terrible decision making makes me call this a bad bass, don't buy it until they resign the fretboard.

Plays very easy pick ups though a little hiss from the gain being up ,they sustain well and have great tone , it’s tricky finding the sweet spot of each note but the nice thing is you have that ability with the fretless, it frigging rocks I gig 5 days a week and lately have been playing this gem ya it’s heavy but no neck dive . Buy this bass every time I see it it goes up , I know why now !

I love the sound. Have another Bass not fretless. I can’t get enough. One day I’ll get use to it. MAYBE. Unique sound not unique to Fretless. What’s unique is the price. It’s like a tax cut or a school voucher. You get what you need without the price. Highly recommended. It’s like all six string fretless yet affordable. Allows me to prepare and appreciate a product I believe I will enjoy for a lifetime. A fretless is not just a Bass. It’s an experience. Thanks for making it affordable. Highly recommended. For the bass player on a budget no excuse. We all should have one. Thanks. I like your STYLE.????. I’ve owned this bass now for several months and just want to add. This is for beginners not for professionals . It’s a practice bass. Too flawed for recording. Not bad for beginners.
