Great short scale bass!

First of all, I don't usually do reviews, unless I can add to the other reviews...
So on the positive side: Nice finish, light weight, no neck dive, excellent tone, and easy to dial in different tones.. It also has a 24 frets, most short scale basses have 20 or less. This is a big plus. Great value for the buck, especially if you have some set up skills....

On the negative side: Well please note, the cost of the bass reflexes some of the negatives... That being said, expect to do some setup, such as intonation adjustment, may have sharp fret ends, and check the truss rod adjustment, mine didn't have any tension applied to counter the string tension. Tuners have more than normal backlash...

Normally the strings need replaced, on this one I kept the E string (.100") and replaced the others, because the gauge was too light, I recommend using: (0.045 - 0.050") G, (0.065") D, (0.080 - 0.085") A, and (0.100") E string...

I was hopeful after seeing the other reviews that this might be one of those rare Chinese cheapo basses that are surprising good for the money, but I was severely disappointed. Rear pickup wiring was faulty out of the box, the "rosewood" neck is actually some kind of plastic, the adjustment knobs were all loose and wiggling. Frets were insanely sharp on the edges, the setup non-existent.

After filing the fret ends and re-soldering the rear pickup I attempted a set up and was almost able to get it into the normal range for a bass - 2.5ish mm off the 24th fret, but a number of frets buzzed. (A shimming of the neck *might* have helped this, but I opted against that step.)

In the end the bass had some very poor sound quality, so for the fun of it, I put a set of Tomastik flats on it (high end strings) and swapped out the pickups for a Bartolini set that I had laying around. Not much of an improvement from what would be $300 upgraded parts. The machines were very stiff, but did hold a tuning. The bridge was standard and worked correctly. For the asking price, I have to believe you would be better off buying an Ibanez. YMMV.

Took a chance and it's a winner in my opinion

I wanted a short scale bass guitar and I like inexpensive items - that's a consistent theme of mine, the inexpensive part. I've got standard long scale 5-string and 4-string basses. I did some research and decided I'd try my luck on this guitar. It's hard to trust pictures but it really does look like the photo. Beyond playability and sound, I don't know of many musicians that don't want a nice looking axe. My band mates really like the look.

This doesn't disappoint in function either. I had a friend, that's a professional musician and guitar technician, give it a once over and he was impressed with the quality. He had to do some adjusting to the saddles and the nut to get string height properly adjusted. All of the hardware is good quality. It has solid tuning machine heads that function easily. The neck is thin and has nice large frets. The controls knobs are solid and turn smoothly. I play rock and some funky slap bass and this sounds really nice. The electronics seems to be properly wired since there isn't any buzzing or interference when I'm recording. It's comfortable to play and has good balanced weight but isn't too heavy. I'd recommend it to anyone for an inexpensive bass for home use and even gigging out at the local bars. No, it's not a $3000 Warwick but that's the point. It's a great bass for under $200 - definitely worth the money IMHO. I've had it for several months now and I really do like this bass guitar.

Oh yeh, you'll want to replace the strings that come with it. The factory likes to wind the strings on without using the tuning nuts to save time. This puts a twist in the strings that can produce excessive fret buzz. My friend, the guitar tech, showed this to me.

Bought this for my stepson. He's 12, but he's small for his age. He wanted me to teach him how to play, and I tried reaching him on my bass, but he couldn't hold the fretboard past the 3rd fret.

Ok, so I looked on Amazon and found this little gem.

Now, I already know a lot of the purists out there will say, "no, you should teach him on a full size."

Don't believe it. I got this thing, opened it up, tuned it, plugged it in and jammed out "Flight of the Icarus" with no problem.

I had to lower the bridge a bit, because he's not used to pressing strings down, I'll raise them a bit every so often till he's at a normal string height.

It's fully adjustable, it has all the slam of my SDGR.

The pickups, well, they're a bit weak, but then again, we're talking about a practice instrument for a small kid.

I got him the all black model which is BEAUTIFUL. I may get one for myself in the dark brown/light brown paint job (it's kinda like a motif for me... Dark brown/light brown starburst is like my thing)...

If you got small hands and wanna play, get one.

If you're not too tall, get one.

If you're back just ain't what it used to be, get one.

And don't tell anyone that a smaller bass isn't as good as a big one.

And if you're in one of those bands that like to hit things with your guitars at the end of the show, well, you won't feel TOO bad if you smash this one.

I don't write these reviews very often, and I'm very big on getting bang for my buck. I'm VERY happy with this bass.

And one more thing. Do not call it a ukulele. It's not.
