5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! A really good deal!

As a set from the Amazon reseller Austin Bazaar: What more can one ask for? A fine sounding uke, built-in electronics and tuner! And, a protective case, not just a gigbag, at a price (with free shipping) less than many others charge for the ukulele alone!

I confess! If I could have but one uke, it would be a soprano. There's something about the fragility of its tone that haunts me. Anything larger, even a concert, seems to lose it and sound like...well...a guitar, to me, anyway. This one doesn't, at least not as much. It somehow captures a bit of it so that I still feel like I'm playing a UKULELE!

The tuner works great. I'm one of those people who keeps a tuner attached to every instrument, but they are either so large that they unbalance the instrument, are small but awkward to read (
Snark S-1 Son of Snark Guitar and Bass Tuner ), or don't stay on well ( D'Addario NS Micro Clip-On Tuner ) The KA-TE's tuner is just right. It's responsive, but not overly responsive, and easy to read. It took me a bit of getting used to in that an up arrow (triangle, really) means the string is flat so raise it and a down arrow means the string is sharp, so lower it. This is the opposite of what I'm accustomed to, but I find I've become used to it.

BTW, DO NOT TRIM THE ENDS OF THE STRINGS WHILE THE INSTRUMENT IS NEW! Aquila or not, these strings take days to settle in and will stretch to the point where you fins you have double windings (windings on windings) on the tuning post. This is a bit much (and can lead to tuning machine failure on a U Bass). So, let them stretch in for a few days and then unwind them, take in the slack, and rewind. Eventually, the strings will stabilize and it will be okay to trim them.

It may not be obvious how to take in the slack the first time you try it. The uke comes with each string going through the peg hole twice: once as usual, then a half-wrap around the post, and through again. My technique is to
* hold the string against the fretboard with my left hand and use a peg-winder to promptly unwind the string with my right hand, all the while doing my best to maintain as much tension on the string as possible with my left hand,
* use my right hand to push the excess through the peg hole,
* re-tighten the string against the post by pulling on the free end, and finally
* rewind string.

Perfect, perfect, perfect. I wanted to transtion from acoustic guitar, which I've played for 11 years, to something smaller and more portable for when I don't feel like lugging out my guitar case in my tiny apartment, something I can just pick up and strum for a bit while relaxing on the couch. This is my first uke and I wanted to spend a little more than people traditionally do on the first go-round so it would be high quality and a uke that lasts. After reading reviews from seasoned players on uke boards, I went with this Kala concert uke. I am a tall, bigger person, so I wanted something bigger than the traditional soprano uke. This is perfect on my frame, I don't look all Chris Farley "fat guy in a little coat" holding this up on my body. It has a fuller sound, which I also love. The strings are Aquila, so no need to replace upon receipt. The body is smooth and satiny, everything is perfectly balanced. You really won't get a better deal with the tuner, which works perfectly and is super easy to use, and the hard-side case. Other uke bundles come with a crappy gig bag, but this case is NICE. It's velvet inside with a cubby for the tuner, cloth, a capo (definitely pick up a uke capo when you get this!), etc, along with an outside zip pocket and two back straps. Awesome bundle all around, don't hesitate!

this is such a cute ukulele! it’s my first one and i absolutely love it. i was able to put the tuner in the pocket of the gig bag and zip the ukulele into it fully without any issues. it isn’t a big pocket - it’s just a flat pouch on the front of the bag - so there isn’t a whole lot you can put in there and the tuner is a bit bulky for it. with the pocket empty the instrument zips into the bag with ease and slightly extra room. the ukulele itself is cute, unique, and feels well-made! not that i know much about ukuleles, but it sounds really pleasant. it did take awhile to tune the strings right out of the box, and i had to immediately retune them a few times, but i know strings have to stretch. overall i’m really happy with the package and it was a good value! it’s giftable too - it came wrapped in protective packaging inside a box, which was shipped inside of another thick box. it also arrived sooner than expected. there is a small chip and a small scuff in the paint on the body of the instrument, which was disappointing, but it really isn’t that noticeable and doesn’t affect the performance or general appearance.
