My favorite chair is an OLD English Wingback that lives in “My” corner of our Sunroom. It is a nice room. Bright, as most “sunrooms” are with their walls of windows letting all that light in. But “all that light” is really not conducive to sitting quietly and reading a good book. It is too bright most of the day and by the time the light gets LESS overpowering other things, like preparing supper and having a “daily data dump” with my still too busy Professor wife taking priority.
For more than 40 years I had an old-style cantilever reading light with a weight on the end of a stalk that adjusted the angle of the light over the chair. It was big, heavy, and ugly in its brass and glass heft. But it DID light a book effectively ONCE you got it adjusted JUST RIGHT.
My wife was not a fan of that light…ever. One day, in passing as she was looking askance at my old torchiere I said “Find me something BETTER. We can swap this one out.” Like most utterances made in haste, or jest, or indignation, I had NO expectation that she had the time or patience to go “Lamp Hunting.”
I was decidedly incorrect about that supposition. Not only did she find me a BETTER lamp, she found me a PERFECT lamp. It is AMAZING. From its 15-watt 1500 lumen LED ADJUSTABLE bulb to its Touch Control on the lamp or its REMOTE CONTROL in case the lamp is BEHIND YOU. It is sleek, modern, with a movable “gooseneck” on a slim stalk with NO counterweight needed to keep it in place. It is 72 inches tall, the perfect height to stand behind my old Wingback and light my book, or laptop, or crossword puzzle. And it has a One-Hour OFF timer to allow you or your kids to fall asleep with the light ON and then turn off as the hour passes. Absolutely perfect.

The lamp has variable color temperatures and brightness levels that allow me to “blend” my book light with the light streaming into the sunroom. There are three distinct Kelvin temperatures available on the light:
3000° Kelvin is WARM, YELLOW Light. Soft and pleasant, but not great for reading or close work. But excellent for relaxing, conversation, or ambience.
4500° Kelvin is BRIGHT, WHITE Light. Good for Kitchens, Offices, Reading and Close or Hand work.
6000° Kelvin is COOL, WHITE Light. This is Task Light. For Workshops, Industrial Areas, Worker Safety.
Brightness is adjustable from 5% to 100% on the remote control. And the lamp has the ability to filter OUT 95% of the BLUE light emitted from tech screens that is known to disrupt sleep cycles.
In ALL aspects of function and use THIS lamp is far superior to my prior one. It demonstrates how far industrial design can advance in five decades. This is not at all surprising, but the reality of switching one for the other proves that beyond any doubt.
The YTDRGB LED Floor Lamp is $39.98 at AMAZON (July 2024), and I can say with conviction that this is a LOT of lamp for the money. It provides me with a reading lamp, a “mood” lamp, a “working” lamp and an easily movable lamp should I need to use it elsewhere in the house.
