5.0 out of 5 stars The Trimmer of My Dreams

Yes that sounds dramatic, but it's not an overstatement. This trimmer was such a massive upgrade for me and it has substantially improved my lawn maintenance routine.

My previous trimmer was a cheap corded big box store brand and was long past its useful life when I decided to upgrade.

I chose the EGO cordless based the outstanding reviews and now I know why it has such high ratings. This was an investment purchase for me (paid off in installments), so I did a ton of research before taking the leap. There was a lot of consensus among YouTubers and bloggers that this was a great product, but I was still a little reticent to drop this amount of cash on an optional piece of lawn equipment.

But this baby has proved itself worthy of the price and the reviews! It was very easy to assemble, although I did have to watch a video to see if I was installing the handle correctly. Speaking of the handle, it's very sturdy but also very comfortable and my hand doesn't get tired of holding it.

My favorite feature of this trimmer is the automatic string loader. It took me a little fiddling to figure out how to feed my line into the loading holes, but once I did, the magic began! The feeder is a little noisy and you have to keep an eye on it, because it will swallow up the whole string if you don't stop it in time. Don't worry if this happens to you though because it's easy to open up the string chamber and start over.

The battery life on this baby is excellent! I've never run out of battery while trimming my lawn. I've used it for an extensive cleanup in my back yard to take down a large amount of brush, and it still didn't get close to running out of charge. The battery docking station was easy to mount to the wall, and the battery is fairly easy to get on and off the trimmer (although it takes a little push to get it on).

I saw some reviewers say that the weight of this machine made their arms tired (primarily because of the big battery), but I find the weight to be an advantage. It makes the trimmer feel more sturdy and allows me to make smoother lines when I'm edging.

This trimmer has made me a master at edging by the way. I get compliments on my lawn from fully grown dudes all the time (I'm a lil gal), and I can see their envy when I whip this bad boy out. My yard has the cleanest lines in the neighborhood, and I'm very proud of my progress at making crisp edges along my driveway and sidewalk.

Overall, I cannot recommend this trimmer highly enough. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Unit
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2024
I've bought Stihl products for about 40 years, so when I was first interested in a battery powered trimmer I looked at a couple of their models at my local Ace. Right off the bat, the trigger release mechanism was hard to work on every display unit they had, and the employee couldn't get them to work any better. Their quality has really tanked over the last decade!

Anyways, I did some research on other brands and decided to give this E-GO unit a try. So far I'm pretty impressed. It was easy to set up, and easy to use. The fit and finish is good and the trigger release works really well! I have a half acre with about two dozen trees, 75' of shrubs, and another 100' or so of landscape beds that I trim around which takes about 20 minutes. I used the low speed setting for thin areas and switched to high for the thicker stuff. I ended up with half battery life remaining when I was done, which would work out to about 40 minutes run time. The unit is a bit heavy (but expected with such a large battery) and the bump head is super sensitive...even letting out line if you get a little sloppy with controlling the unit and it slightly hits the ground. I really like the fact that nothing is running and there is no noise as I move between areas. All in all I would recommend this trimmer.

My 10+ year old trusty Echo gas trimmer finally started giving me issues. Even after a tune-up it was increasingly more difficult to start and I noticed it was leaking fuel. I couldn't quite determine where the fuel leak was, and given the age of the trimmer, I decided it was time for a new one.

I thought I'd go with another Echo or Stihl gas trimmer. But I saw these battery versions and they intrigued me so I decided to research them, and I ended up with this EGo trimmer.

I have a decently large property for a neighborhood at 12K sq ft. But it's not huge. My first concern was given the size of the lot, will the battery hold up? Not an issue at all. I still have 2 (of 4) bars after each trim. I can trim the lot twice before it needs a recharge. I have some concerns about longevity, but for now, this is 5 stars.

My second concern was power. On this matter, I can't go above 2.5 to 3 stars. The old Echo buzzed through grass like a hot knife through butter, and rarely did I run it at full throttle. Didn't have to! But even on high and at full speed, the EGo needs a bit more time to do the job. Don't get me wrong - it does it. But it's more like a lukewarm knife through a cold slab of butter. It's "workable" but it's iffy for folks with stands of weeds or anything thicker in nature. It's adequate, but less than exceptional on the St. Augustine grass I have.

This brings me to the 3rd item - weight and comfort while using. I'd say it's a bit less in weight than the Echo, but it's actually more tiresome to use. By the end, my right arm, which I use to grab the handle on the pole...is really getting cranky. And I think it's because it takes me longer to trim the entire yard than the old Echo, because it's less powerful. It also feels less balanced than the Echo. I tried a shoulder harness, and it made things worse instead of better and I only used it once because I was frustrated with the lack of free movement allowed by the harness.

Noise/Fumes - 10 out of 5! This is where it really shines. This thing is whisper quiet, there are no emissions, no gas to mix, no tune-ups to do, no fumes or emissions, and no crossing your fingers and hoping it starts this week. I also love how if I'm walking to spot to spot, or someone comes out to talk to me...just release the trigger and talk. When done, pull the trigger and you're right back to trimming. And it is all of the above as to why I plan to keep it until it dies.

Design and ease of use? Excellent overall. I love the adjustments that can be made and they are so easy to make. I haven't loaded new string just yet, but it looks amazingly simple. And to just grab it, pull the trigger and be ready to trim? That's pretty awesome.

Conclusion...Is this a perfect device? Nope. But if you're on a small to medium standard neighborhood lot with standard lawn grass you are trimming, and nothing overly thick...you'll be fine. Just crank it up to high and open the throttle and be a wee bit patient as it does take longer than a really good gas trimmer to work its way through the grass. It's plusses outweigh the negatives. 4 out of 5 overall. Good luck!
