5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great on first try!

We've lived in our house for 14 years, but never really "done" anything to the yard except mulch-mow it. We've been noticing that the grass is looking…less than awesome, and while I don't need the BEST lawn in the neighborhood, I also don't really want the WORST. Dr. Google suggested that our problem might be too much biomaterial laying on the surface, not allowing water etc. to get down where it needs to. Ordered this little beast, and the results were pretty amazing! The machine is easy to assemble, and comes with the scarifier "blade" pre-attached; I swapped that out for the dethatcher, and was really impressed. On just the front yard alone, I wound up with 5 large Kraft bags full of fluffy dead grass. We'll see what the results are going forward, but the machine definitely does what it advertises.

The cord is a bit of a pain; I was also wearing aerating soles, so avoiding the cord with the machine itself AND the spikes took some time. And, the supplied grass-catcher was useless, at least in this first run: it's "full" at only halfway, which wasn't even a single pass down the yard. I ended up doing what a lot of other reviewers mentioned: I just left it off, and raked up the smutch. Maybe with biannual use the catcher would be good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great timesaver for dethatching

I seldom write reviews however, this product was terrific and great value so I thought I should. I've only used the scarifier blade but it works terrific. After mowing the grass very short I made a couple passes at lower and lower settings while raking up the debris between each one and ended up with a huge pile of thatch. As expected, the bag is only useful for minimal removal and I opened the chute partway with a bungee cord to let the thatch out easier. Don't open too much or you will get sprayed with dead grass and any rocks/multch hidden in the grass (hurts a little but not bad). I bought a few days ago for $127 and the price suddenly jumped $30 for some reason.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall A Great Machine

Full transparency I almost didn't buy this product after reading some of the reviews about motors burning up, etc, etc. Unfortunately, last year's drought was terrible on my lawn it definitely needed help. After thinking it over for awhile I decided to give it a try out and see how it did.
Standard disclaimer applies: Individual results may vary.
From the top:
1) The product arrived in great shape and assembly was very simple.
2) I didn't bother to do any engineering calculations on current draw vs length of extension cord, etc.
3) I plugged it in to my 20 year old, 100 foot extension cord and it worked just fine.
Pros
Worked like a champ, de-thatched and scarified my lawn very nicely, completely pleased the job it did.
Lightweight and easy to move around and use.
I had no trouble with power supply and motor didn't burn up, but I suspect some situational awareness and common sense should be applied. As with gas lawnmowers it will lug down when the clippings accumulate under it. When it happened I would raise the front wheels and pull it backwards to clear the clippings. I used it for 2 hours on my front lawn with no difficulty.
It's very simple to change from the dethatch blade to the scarifier blade with the hex key that is supplied it also has a holder that attaches to the handle to keep the hex key close by.
Cons
The controls seem to work backwards from every lawnmower I've owned since all the safety devices were installed. You have to depress the start button and then pull the "deadman" handle to get it to run unlike my lawnmower. Not a big thing but part of the learning curve.
The poor reviews about the bag were correct it will fill up about 1/3 of the way and then needs to be dumped that equates to about 20 feet of dethatching. I removed the bag and raked.....a lot, but it ended up being faster than using the bag. This is why I gave it a overall 4 star rating.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase and it did a great job of getting my lawn prepared for another Texas summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight and works

Works very well for me and easy to switch out between the dethatcher and scarifier tool. Greenworks usually makes great lawn tools so I am optimistic. It did a great job pulling up thatch and caught most of it in the grass catcher my first attempt. May be easier just raking as it doesn't catch everything and I ended up raking anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way more cost effective than hiring someone to dethatch
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2024
I have not used the scarifier yet, but I can say the dethatcher was very effective. It probably isn't as agressive as a professional tool, but that is ok. I wasn't sure what to expect at first, so I attempted an area in the back yard to see how much grass I would need to replant. This took did not pull up good grass, instead it really pulled up dead grass. This is way more effective than using a hand dethatcher. The neighbor was quoted $500 to have someone dethatch his yard. He asked if he could borrow my Greenworks dethatcher after he saw my results. We're both sold on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wow

I used this to dethatch my lawn. Wow did it pull up a lot of dead grass. Lawn filled in thick and green in about three weeks. Make sure to use in spring or fall and not the hot months. Works great. The only con is the bagger is to small and pretty much worthless. I just ran it with it off and raked up the dead grass. 6 30 gallon bags in just a small front yard.

The package arrived a day earlier than expected but that was great. It was easy to put together however it would have been nice to have some directions. The thatcher is easy to use and even better easy to start (which is important). Also it is not too heavy for me to lift. As I will probably use it only in the spring and autumn, I think it will work out just fine. All considering, it is a great value and I am very pleased.
