5.0 out of 5 stars Great Battery Powered Chainsaw

I was a bit skeptical regarding battery operated chainsaws - honestly I thought this would be under-powered having a previous crappy experience with Dewalt's 18v 6.25in circular saw. I decided on this unit after being very pleasantly surprised by the line trimmer and being quite happy with Dewalt's 20v line of tools. I purchased this saw after reading reviews and deciding to further my commitment to Dewalt (for context, I have about a dozen 18v tools that I began purchasing since they're inception - was a GC back in the late 90's and went with Dewalt so the batteries were interchangeable with the various contractors at job sites).

Regarding Dewalt's 20v line, it's a marked improvement over their 18v tools - the batteries just last longer, are in general less bulky (they run from 1ah to 10 or 15ah depending on the battery type) as you can use a battery appropriate for a job (for light work use the smaller batteries, for heavier the larger). I've only had a problem with one battery that won't charge properly that I wished I had sent back (it was pat of DCA2203C- two 20ah batteries, a charger and adapter). Unfortunately I've misplaced the battery so no recourse (buried somewhere in my basement. As an aside, if you buy a battery adapter you can use the new batteries on older equipment - makes them last a bit longer - I've slowly been swapping out as the older equipment dies (all the old batteries are completely dead and it's not worthwhile to have them rebuilt).

About the line-trimmer - my property is a 1/2 acre wooded lot with about 40 large hardwood trees and only a couple of strips of grass along the edges and the back "yard" - I tried various line trimmers and the mix-fuel versions are frankly just not worth the trouble - the corded trimmers too much of a pain. The Dewalt DCST925B works quite well for my needs - a single battery is more than enough for most trimming with a second needed if I'm also edging (I've got about 120 feet of sidewalk on one side of the corner lot. In any case this led to me thinking about replacing my chainsaw - it was an 18" Stihl Farm Boss that frankly was overkill for the number of times I needed it. I ended up getting the bar jammed up in a log and decided that I had enough. 95% of the time a 12 inch bar was plenty - I had also read some reviews about upgrading the bar to a 16" using aftermarket parts so there are options if I need bigger capacity.

The DCCS620 is fairly lightweight and super simple to use - it also cuts out when the trigger is released so much safer than gas powered. It's light enough that it can be used one-handed (if you have the grip strength) but I wouldn't recommend it as it's safer and easier to control with two. There's also a chain break across the top to cover accidents on the plunge. The only negative, which I was aware of going in, is that it leaks bar chain oil a bit - not enough to drain the reservoir but enough to be annoying - I put the whole thing in a plastic shopping bag when not in use. I mostly use it to cut fallen limbs - these mostly don't exceed 12" in diameter but on the occasion I've had to reposition the saw to get through them. When making a lot of cuts I've had to change out the battery, but really it's what I expected for this type of saw. In all, a great battery powered chainsaw.

Although I have a slight obsession with DeWalt 20v tools, as someone who has traditionally always used Stihl gas powered chainsaws, I was a little nervous about purchasing one that was battery powered. However, like every other Dewalt product I own, this chainsaw surpassed my expectations in every way.

First, even more of a value than I thought. I thought I was paying a little over $200 for the chainsaw only. And was pleasantry surprised to find that it actually comes with a 5 amp hour battery (didn’t read the listing thoroughly). Those are around $75 alone!

Setup was a breeze right out of the box. Charge and pop in the battery, add some chain oil (don’t forget to order this too!) and you are off and running.

Very lightweight, making it easy to use with one hand when reaching for higher branches. The chain tightening/loosening mechanism is very user friendly. The battery life may have been the most pleasant surprise of all. I cut and hauled limbs for a few hours and still had over half of the charge left on the 5 ah battery. I cut limbs ranging from 2 inches to 10 inches across. This thing never flinched. It’s so quiet that the amount of power and speed at which it melts branches is crazy.

In sum: If you are looking for a chainsaw that has plenty of power, isn’t super loud, has a great battery life, is lightweight, is a blast to use, and a great value for your money, then stop reading the reviews and buy this.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent little saw

I own a Stihl 036 as my big felling and bucking saw, and it's what I will still use for trees and logs larger than 10" diameter. However, I've always liked to keep a second, smaller chain saw around for limbing, bucking small logs, and the lighter weight. Over the years, I owned top-handle (i.e.- pruning/arborist) models from Stihl (their 019) and Efco. While this saw is not technically a top handle, it has the balance and light weight to be used for amateur arborist purposes, while also being useful for making cuts on the ground (note, however, that this saw does not have a lanyard loop like any professional, top-handle arborist saw would). I paid cash/regular Amazon price for my saw, and am not being compensated for this review in any way.

So far, I've used the saw for about six hours, and am still on the original chain without sharpening. The chain seems to be holding an edge nicely still (spitting chips, not sawdust), after cutting several large (4"-8") hickory and maple limbs, and limbing and bucking two ~10" diameter maple trees.

I used 5.0 Amp hour batteries, and needed to switch them out every 45 minutes or so of hard cutting. I'm not sure how people are getting a full day's work out of even the larger Flexvolt batteries, but since I own a bunch of 4.0 and 5.0 amp hour guys, I just pull them when they get weak and drop them into my chargers. The draw of this 20 Volt saw seems similar to the 20 Volt leaf blower, which I also own. To keep either of these yard tools running hard over a full day, I'd recommend having at least five 5.0 amp hour batteries and four DCB-115 chargers plugged-in.

Regarding the leaking of oil in storage complaints that other reviewers have made, this saw will hold its oil well if stored with the flat side of the bar horizontally (i.e.- flat on the ground), with the saw's "DeWalt" logo facing upward. In a "normal" chain saw position (i.e. teeth of bar toward sky & ground, "DeWalt" logo facing sideways), the saw will leak oil, but it's a minor behavior change to solve this.

When cutting, the saw does fling oil like a Sheik on the verge of bankruptcy, but bar oil is pretty cheap. Not a big problem, and lubrication is nice...

The oil cap was stuck when I received the saw, but careful loosening using pliers freed it, and then a light coat of bar oil along the seal solved the trouble. I can now loosen and tighten it by hand just fine. DeWalt should lubricate the seal with a bit of silicone or oil, but with all the reviews mentioning the problem, hopefully buyers can figure it out...

The thin-kerf chain can get bound-up if you push the saw too hard. I had to learn to use a lighter touch to avoid the trouble. The thin bar can flex more than I am used to as well, but again, just adjust your force accordingly. I am still using the original bar, and my saw says right on its body that a 12" bar is the maximum size. Since my Stihl has a 20" bar, I am fine with 12" as the size for this DeWalt.

I did allow the chain to get too loose once as I was cutting, and it did jump off, but getting it back on is easy and requires no tools (hint: position the saw upside-down, resting on its handle and brake as you do so). The chain brake works excellently, and this saw feels as safe as such a tool can be. Keep your awareness up, though: quiet is not the same as harmless! I wear kevlar chaps, gloves, and a helmet with face shield and hearing protection when using this saw. But that quiet operation is incredible. With my Stihl 036, my wife and kid can't stand the noise anywhere, even in the house with the windows shut. With this battery powered DeWalt, they can be playing 25 feet away (when I am bucking or limbing, not felling!)

This does not feel like a truly heavy duty saw, but as a brush/limbing/lightweight/2nd saw, I love it so far. It's incredible to finish a small cutting job and not reek of 2-stroke fuel. It's great to work quietly so that family and neighbors are not disturbed. With only a few hours' use, I can't yet comment on long-term durability, but it seems like it will last. Will edit if anything changes.
