5.0 out of 5 stars Cord Length a problem
Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2024
I don't know of many applications in a barn that provide an electrical outlet 4' away from the watering trough. Our water is outside the barn door and even though it states not to use an extension cord it would be unusable without one. I used a heavy duty outside extension cord during our recent 18 degree weather to plug the heater into our barn outlet. It worked find and I had no issues. At least our animals had water to drink. It kept the water temperature cool but not cold. How long it holds up is still up for review since it is the first time I have used it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great

This one is definitely lasting longer than the one I bought this year for my 100 gal tank for my horses. You know, the Rubbermaid ones? Yeah, got a heater for the 100gal and then this one for a 30 or so gal. I don’t know how big it really is. I don’t measure things out like that. But the water is never iced (unless I don’t plug it back in) and is out working the ranch store one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Heater. K&H Customer Service is Outstanding
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2024
We have tons of these heaters in our horse barn along with K&h tank heaters. The quality is great, and they work so well with windchill/temps in the -20 -30s. Not only that, they give me a piece of mind because they are extremely safe. I had had an issue one time with my tank heater and K&H’s customer service is unmatched and even replaced mine when it was over the 2 month warranty. Along with all their other products that we use/have from horses to dogs to cats, we are always happy with the quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy set up and easy use

I bought this for ease of use in a 50 gallon water tank for horses, although the heater is small the heater did keep the water from freezing. A thin layer on top did freeze but was easily broken, for the size of the heater it did an outstanding job with over 50 gallons of water in very cold temps over the course of a week's time.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024
Bought two of these two winters ago and just purchased a third. Installed in 5 gallon plastic buckets, they kept water from freezing for over a week in well below freezing weather. First two have been through at least 350 hours below freezing and still running well. Two reasons I gave it four stars are the design. They don't like to sit flat in the bottom and try to stand on end given the chance. I weighted them to stop this. Also, the protective housing is larger than it needs to be. While it protects well from melting plastic buckets, it also reduces the capacity as they need to always be submerged. In a five gallon bucket, you only get about 3.5-4 gallons before the water is below the heater thus destroying it. In fairness, I am not sure how much smaller they could make the housing before it risks melting plastic.

1.0 out of 5 stars NEVER worked properly!
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2013
This product has not delivered on any of the promises. I live in Western Washington and our winters are mild, for the most part. First time use, I submerged this heater into a 7 gallon water trough and plugged it into a thermal cube in the evening. The next morning, I was shocked to find the water STEAMING, almost bath temperature! In hind sight, I wish I had used a thermometer to record the actual water temperature but bottom line, the water was not drinkable, it was too hot. I tried to return the product but I had purchased it in the October and did not use it until December and Amazon's return window had expired. So, I made the most of it by manually plugging the heater in while I was cleaning stalls in the morning and evening and unplugging it when I was done. I have one horse, so I spend an average of ten minutes on barn chores which gave this unit ample time to thaw quarter or thicker inch of ice off the top. If the water level was low, I would refill the tank and the heater literally sizzled when the cold water hit it. Just like the sizzle you get when you put out a camp fire.

Well, all this is moot as of this morning, the unit quit working altogether.

I wish there was a zero star option, this product deserves it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Missed really testing it.......

This appears to work well. This was supposed to arrive BEFORE the last cold spell (was out for delivery and the Van came down the drive), however, got it after the cold spell. In this 100+ gallon trough we do have air and that helped keep the water open. It took less than 24 hours for the heater to melt all the ice in the trough. For a low wattage heater (250 watts) this does seem to work very well at keeping melted water available for stock.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good, Initial review will update as time goes by

Bought this to replace the same brands 80w bucket heater that either quit working, or couldn't handle the -20°F for a week we have been having in Nebraska because it froze solid in a 5 gallon bucket. This heater being 250w so far after 1 night has kept the water completely thawed. I also attached a small tiny submersible fountain pump to the top of the protective cage to keep the water circulated, and checking the temperature this morning the bucket was at 60°F. Now we will see as time goes on and I will update this review if needed.
