5.0 out of 5 stars Aqueon MiniBow Aquarium still going strong after 3 years
Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2024
I purchased MiniBow, 2.5 gal in 2021. It also comes in 1 & 5 gal, so make sure you order the correct size. In 3 years I have had 3 Betta fish, only 1 was caught near the filter. I average about 1 Betta a year before they die, due to me or life? The bowl is acrylic, and it still looks new, no scratches, so be careful how you clean. The black rim stand is plastic and holds the bowl very well. It's the water weight that makes it durable. I have a small heater and only use solid deco stones. I noticed the painted stones start peeling and make the water look dirty. Last month after cleaning the filter stopped working. I called Aqueon to see if I could just replace the filter. The rep asked if I had cleaned the fan, nope, didn't know there was a fan. He waited patiently & explained the filter could be disassembled to access the fan. He gave me directions and I found the fan and it was filthy. I cleaned the fan and filter has been running great for a few days. Time to get another Betta. I suggest if you have issues call Aqueon, the rep (sorry no name) was very helpful and patient. I hope this review helps. After 3 years I recommend the Aqueon MiniBow Aquarium for a small fish. Oh, the small hole at the top of tank is where I drop the food, instead of lifting the lid, never had a Betta jump out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to set up. Great price.

My betta was upgraded from a 3gal to this 5gal. The filter works well but is a little strong so I have Christmas moss free floating and let it clog the filter bottom a bit plus stacked natural rocks to keep him protected. I bought a pack of sponge filter covers as well just in case. I haven’t needed to try the water change feature yet but it looks pretty simple. I can’t find the mechanism others mentioned to turn down the flow of water but my betta doesn’t mind. The back cut outs are nice for thermometers and heaters. The light works well without being too strong. Plenty of room. Replacement filters are cheap enough too. Hoping to get a few years out of this tank!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2024
I bought this so I could have a Beta in my office. I wanted something appropriate for him, but it wanted it to look nice. I really didn't pay attention when I made the purchase, so I was surprised that this was plastic, but it's fine. I can't really tell the difference when it's in use. The filter is working well and Alpha (the Beta) was using the whole tank within a few days, once he figured out he wasn't trapped in a little cup anymore. The light is very nice, just the right brightness to show the interior and not blind the fish. If I needed another 5 gallon tank, I'd buy this again.

Update - Lost a star because my power went out for an hour and when it came back, the filter refused to work. I ended up needing to buy another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little tank!

I got my 9yr old niece this fish tank for her bday and she LOVES IT! I also purchased a heater and bubbler for it. It houses a betta, guppies, neon's, cherry shrimp, and a snail. 2.5lbs of gravel or sand is all you need for the bottom. It's compact, so perfect for a kitchen counter or office, easy to maintain, and has provided HOURS of enjoyment for our family.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice product but suction tube is too short
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024
I mostly love this little fish tank, a perfect size for my one little goldfish. It was easy to set up and the light is very bright. The concept of the built in siphon to change water was a good one, but in reality it doesn't work so well. The horizontal part of the tube that sucks the water out is too short so it barely clears the side of the tank and I ended up with water down the side of the tank or having to lift the entire filter/siphon assembly up and tilt it to get it to clear the side of the tank. It was far easier to just buy a separate fish tank siphon. I love everything else about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this tank (with a few slight mods)

I really love this minibow easy clean tank!! It’s got a sleek look, the filter is pretty quiet, doesn’t cause very much current at all & the original lighting was adequate :)

Now for a more in depth overview…

The 5 gallon is great to spoil a betta! Please please don’t put a betta in anything smaller than 2.5 gallons.. I know they can survive but they won’t thrive & with decorations you’re reducing the actual water volume more & more. For example while this is 5 gallons with my plethora of enrichment decorations it actually only took 4 gallons to fill & that was pushing it the water line is almost to the very top lol.

The tank itself while plastic is very sturdy although I didn’t use the bottom stand piece. It gives the tank an extra elevated look for sure but since I was putting it on a small table & I have 3 large dogs I wanted the extra stability of putting it directly on the table.

Also regardless of size you’re gonna need a heater. I live in south Florida but keep my house cold at night. I didn’t realize til I did a lil experiment when soaking my tank decorations just how cold water gets quickly even not near a fan or vent & then it stays cold. You can get one for cheap that auto turns on & off to keep the water at a steady temp (mines so small you can barely see it behind the filter input).

The light on this tank was adequate but it is super basic. I knew this when purchasing & also knew it’s not what I wanted so I replaced it with a 7 inch LED bar for cheap so now I’ve got a dimmable, timeable, color changing light that really elevates the tank imo.

Water changes have never been easier & for people saying the spout is too short to do them… uhm it extends out any basic container can fit. I use a wide lipped 5 gal bucket & even that still works, do I have to tilt it a bit? Yes but it’s still doable & much easier than any water change I’ve ever done in any tank before this so quit complaining. I don’t find the current from the filter to be very strong at all, you can see in my video my silicone plants barely move & my floating diver stays in one spot. So it’s perfectly fine for a betta. My Disco is a cup baby rescue so of course it’s caused him some minor issues the first few days in his new home but he’s already much stronger & in a few more days it’ll be like there’s no current at all for him!

I also found the filter intake to look fairly safe right out the box. It’s completely covered on all sides with pretty tiny slits. Even my betta Disco is a bit on the smaller side & he’d be fine but after some of the review horror stories I put a sponge filter on top of it just as a an extra safety precaution lol. So if you’ve got fish smaller than a betta or shrimp in here I’d suggest doing the same. The cheap & great ones I got that fit almost perfectly were from Amazon (AQUANEAT 6-Pack Pre-Filter Sponge for Aquarium Shrimp Fry Fish Tank Filter 0.6" Intake, Replacement Foam Cover).
