5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent feeder for finches
Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2024
I'm amazed at how this feeder attracts finches. I've had at least 8 on at a time and it's been up only 2 days so far. It's small but easy to fill and carry. The socks are sturdy and it's very easy to clean with few parts. The socks were easy to attach and I'm pleased with how it looks and the birds love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My experience is like the picture except the hopper is yellow instead of green (which I consider a plus).

I got this and filled it with wagner's nyjer seed. It replaced a plain single finch sock that I filled with walmart sold nyjer seed.

I am very pleased with it, I was also very pleased when I saw the one I got was yellow. I had found some information that claimed you can attract more goldfinches with the color yellow.

I have seen mine look like the picture except for the color yellow instead of green.

I also like the fact that unlike plain sock feeders this has a hopper at the top, that way I can fill the hopper and the socks stay full as the birds eat. When I first got it I noticed some feed made its way out of the hopper and I assumed it was because of me using it wrong, but upon closer inspection I see there are 4 clips that hold the clear part of the hopper on tight, 1 of the 4 appears broken, so I will buy another one of these (I need another feeder anyway) and return the old one if I find the new one doesn't have a 4th broken clip. With the number of finches I get the hopper goes from full to about 1/5 in a single day, so I have to fill it everyday. The hopper holds quite a lot of feed, so it is definitely popular with the finches.

I put a long clear finch feeder right next to this one and they only use it if there's no room for more finches on this one (or if there's an aggressive finch that thinks it needs more room). Maybe I should have just gotten a 2nd one of these, but I like to give my birds variety.

Edit: It hasn't been but maybe 1 or 2 days since I wrote the review and already the birds have emptied the hopper and about 1/4 of one of the socks in a single day. I bought the 10 lb bag of nyjer feed when I bought the feeder, and I just emptied that bag. It has been about 8.5 days (.5 is because I'm typing this in the morning and I got it shipped in the afternoon) and I have already used up the entire 10 lb bag of feed. I have another type of finch feed that I haven't used the whole bag of yet. Guess I'll get to see if it is the feed or the feeder that makes the birds flock to this thing. I used the last of my old bag of feed which filled maybe 1/4-1/3 of the hopper, then filled it the rest of the way with the other type of feed, shipping on my new bag of feed is expected for 2.5 days from now, so I figure I'll get about 2 days worth of testing on the 2nd feed type. I'll probably update this review again once that test is done. It seems I get more finches than other people talk about or post pictures/videos of, maybe its because I live in a small farming town while most of the others probably live in urban environments. I'm debating getting a camera and taking pictures of the feeders in action to upload here, if I do they probably won't be super high quality pictures because I'm not rich enough to get a high end camera.

Final Edit: I'm pretty sure its the feeder and not the feed that attract the birds because even with me using my 2nd type of finch feed (which isn't 100% nyjer like the first one) I still got a ton of finches. This time I actually got MORE finches, but I think that is because I just had a snowstorm pass by. After the snowstorm the finches emptied the hopper and emptied about 2/3 of each sock feeder leaving both socks at about 1/3 full lol. My 2nd less popular feeder got a lot more action today too.

As far as my experience feeding finches it seems that they prefer feeders that are very close to trees. When I moved my feeder pole closer to a tree the number of finches at my feeders increased. They also like to go in big groups, so if you want finches you need a lot of places for them to perch and eat, if you only have a small finch feeder then they will pass your house up and go somewhere else. As far as feed they seem to prefer nyjer or a mix of nyjer and sunflower hearts. They also seem to like the color yellow. I'm just giving these tips for people that would like to get into finch feeding because it took me at least half a year before I started getting large numbers of finches because I did almost every one of those tips wrong :p I've also read they like coneflowers that have gone to seed. I'm debating growing some coneflowers at my house this year. Coneflowers also apparently lure hummingbirds (and pollenating bees) before they go to seed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice feeder

First time using a seed sock. Seems to be working fine. Of course some thistle falls out but to be expected. Biggest complaint was the extremely long delay in delivery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons
Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024
A nice feature is the bags self fill. Each bag is large and holds a large amount of Thistle. It took the finches a few days to use the new feeder they kept going to the yellow one but now are using it.
The only Con is the hanger is too long. Our shepherds hook is 7 feet and with a 12 inch hanger makes it too long. It’s much easier to extend a hanger than it is to shorten one so I really think they should shorten the hanger plus the opening at the end of the hanger is very small. You’ll need an S hook to hang it in most situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be careful what you wish for...
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022
I'd seen a couple of goldfinches in my yard and bought this hoping to attract more. Boy, did it work! About 2 weeks after I put it up, it's regularly swarmed by goldfinches. I've had up to 10 hanging on to the socks at once, with others waiting in the nearby trees. The only other finches I've seen so far are some house finches. They will eat from this feeder (though they prefer the regular feeder), but they seem to have a harder time holding on and getting the seeds than the goldfinches do. I enjoy watching the goldfinches, but they are going through about 1 pound of nyjer seed per day. It's starting to get expensive!
Overall, the feeder is quite good, though it could use a few minor tweaks. It hasn't been up long, but it has already been through strong winds and snow, and it's held up well. I like that the socks can be removed for washing (very needed, since the birds tend to, uh, befoul them), and that they provide extra socks so you can switch them out. However, on one of the socks, the rubber circle that holds it on to the plastic has come apart after hanging for just a day. The feeder can be difficult to fill. You basically need three hands: one to hold the cap/lid up, one to hold the feeder steady so it doesn't sway out of the way, which makes you spill seed all over, and one to hold the seed container as you pour it (and that's assuming it's a container you can hold and control with one hand). Just a little clip or something to hold the cap up while you fill it would be hugely helpful. The cap can also be annoying to try to line up to get back on correctly, especially if it's hanging above your eye level. Do not make the mistake I made of filling it inside the house -- the seeds spill out through the mesh. I did not have the issue with the spillage that another reviewer had -- I didn't find it excessive, as long as it happened outside and not on my floor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Deer eat!

The feeder itself is easy to fill and decent quality. But beware if you have wildlife in your area. The deer have eaten through the bottom of every sock making it unusable in my area.
