5.0 out of 5 stars There's a reason this is the top seller.

I'll try to keep this short, despite having a lot to gush about.

First, this filter is cheap. I don't mean just price-wise, I mean overall. The plastic is low-quality and not very durable. The thing is, that doesn't matter. I don't know what kind of rough-and-tumble aquarium-hobbyist lifestyle some of these reviewers have, but I strain to imagine a situation where the impact resistance of the plastic matters.

Secondly, this filter is cheap. Dirt cheap. I had some concerns about replacing my noisy Marineland 280 with this, because I pride myself on my water quality. Turns out, I needn't have worried. It actually does a better job, and is MUCH quieter. I hardly notice it, despite the filter being less than ten feet from my bed. Also, having had this running for two months now, it has only become quieter. Fantastic.

The filter media that is included is kind of a loss. The biological filtration is fine, and suitably replaces the bio-wheel on my old 280, but the mechanical and chemical filtration is entry-level and disappointing - not to say that any filter comes with the good stuff, though. This is to be expected. Do yourself a favor and pick up one or two Seachem Purigen 100ml packets, and go to your local pet store and pick up some polyfiber pads, some small filter media bags, and some activated carbon. Fill the media bags with the activated carbon, replace the carbon once every month or so, and you're golden. The purigen is what's going to save your water quality, though. I suggest layering it like so, from the bottom-up: Polyfiber pad, activated carbon bag, purigen, and then the included "biomax" on top.

Anyway, back to this product specifically: The way it filters is like your standard cannister - it pushes the water up through the media, as opposed to just around it (like most hang-on-backs do) - this means almost no media bypass. Nary a drop misses getting filtered. The intake tube is clear, and, if kept clean, is nearly invisible inside the tank. The body of the filter itself is a kind of smoky grey plastic, and does not have the goofy-looking bluish tint that the product image has. Heck, even the box shows a bluish tint. Fear not, your black tank will not have a blue cyst growing out the back.

Finally, this product is cheap. Ingeniously cheap. The filter intake tube extension is actually the same as the filter intake tube itself - they just stack on top of each other. The flow regulator is also the u-shaped tube that attaches to the filter intake. That little rod you see poking out of the top of the filter is actually attached to the u-shaped tube, and you adjust the flow by moving the tube left and right, which determines how aligned it is with the impeller. I've hardly seen such impressive streamlining in any product before. No part is wasted or unnecessary. Less parts means less to break. If it does break, it's cheap, cheap, cheap to replace.

This is a neat, cheap, effective, cheap, decent looking, cheap, and cheap filter. I strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars AquaClear: nice and simple, good product

Just received and set up the AquaClear 50. I’m impressed. We have a 29 gallon freshwater tank. I’ve always used MarineLand filters. Why? I have no idea. I just started with MarineLand when I set up my first tank and was familiar with its operation and cleaning. I had no idea there were superior products out there.

My MarineLand Emperor 280 lasted a good 8-10 years and was a workhorse (n.b. when I make comparisons to the MarineLand filter below, I am talking about the old MarineLand Emperor, and *not* the MarineLand Penguin that they sell now. I have no idea the features/quality of the Penguin).

During the last of countless cleanings of my MarineLand filter, one of the plastic pieces where the impeller meets the intake tube finally broke, prompting me to buy a new filter rather than attempt a fix. I figured I would just buy another MarineLand as I always had in the past. But I read the reviews of the MarineLand Penguin, and I saw too many comments about “too loud” and “cheap plastic” ….. so I shopped around for other brands and stumbled on the AquaClear. It’s more expensive than MarineLand, but it got great reviews, so I figured I’d try it.

Initial setup was a piece of cake and took 5 minutes.

    Most noticeable things to me:

    1. The mechanical parts and operation are much simpler than the MarineLand. Fewer plastic parts means fewer possible points of failure.

    2. It has the same three-phase filtration, including a foam pad, a charcoal insert, and some kind of biomaterial pellets in a pouch. These are comparable to the mesh filter insert, charcoal insert, and “biowheel” of the MarineLand.

    3. The water flow is great. It seems stronger than the MarineLand, and it’s infinitely adjustable (compared with the 4-position adjustment on the MarineLand).

    4. It is QUIET, to the point of absolutely silent. Even when I try to listen, I can’t hear it running. My old MarineLand would oftentimes sound like gravel in a blender, and the MarineLand had an ejection tube with tiny holes in it that shot water at the biowheel to make it turn .... and those tiny holes would always get clogged, thus preventing the biowheel from spinning. The AquaClear more simply forces the water from the bottom of the filter, up through that white foam pad and black charcoal pouch and biomaterial and ejects it back into the tank at the top.

    5. Although I haven't done a first cleaning of the AquaClear, it was immediately apparent to me that it will be infinitely easier to clean the MarineLand. All of the filter materials get lifted out of the unit in a tray. Once the tray is removed, the entire inside of the unit is visible and has fewer nooks and crannies where algae/gunk can accumulate. Thus easier to clean.

As of Day 1 of operation, I’m quite happy with the AquaClear. Will see how it performs as the weeks and months and years (hopefully) tick off.

One final note: The Q&A for the AquaClear mentioned that it’s not UL listed. It’s not. It instead has an ETL mark (whatever that is). For comparison, I checked my MarineLand filter. It’s also not UL listed. It also has the ETL mark. I never had any electrical issues with the MarineLand after nearly a decade of use, so I figure it’s a non-issue.
