5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good: PhotoStory on CD & DVD 9 Deluxe -> Photos <-

I purchased this program to put together a slide show of a trip overseas that could be
duplicated on DVD and played on either a DVD player or computer DVD player. I also
wanted to be able to add a sound track to the slide show along with titles, credits,
et alia.

I also wanted to be able to tweak the slide show by timing photos to the music when I
needed to or wanted to do so. Also, wanted to be able to do this with relative ease,
meaning an easy to moderate learning curve.

Well, this program, PhotoStory on CD & DVD 9 Deluxe is the 'convenient solution' for my
multimedia slideshows and provided me with my expectations and more.

The program easily imports your photos and you can place them in any order you wish
once they are imported into the program. Once there you can, at any time, assign a
sound track (4 tracks). Tweaking the sound track and the photo slides is very easy. You
just grasp the sound track or photo nub and stretch it, or reduce it, with your mouse.

You can also assign, by milliseconds, how much time you want the photo slide to fade in
or out and how long to linger on each slide. This allows you the ability to put a rhythm into
your slide show which can make it much more interesting to watch. You can also have the
program automatically assign the amount of time for all the slides. You are able to change
the automated time later if you like.

The program comes on a DVD and with an honest to goodness 31 page manual inside the
box. How old fashioned of Magix to include a paper manual. Loved it. It is only an intro to
the program but it can be enough to get started. I needed to access the documentation
on the program's DVD a couple times. Just hit the "F1" key and voila.

You are able to create your slideshow in 4:3 or 16:9 for widescreen TVs or computer
monitors. You are able to burn your slideshow with a menu onto a playable DVD, CD-Rom,
Video CD, super Video CD, miniDVD, JPEG disc, TV Showtime DVD, Multi-disc, or
Blue-ray Disc. Now that's flexibility.

NOTE: if you want to be able to play your slideshow on TV AND PC and have a full project
backup, you need to choose 'Multidisc' for that option when you burn the slideshow to disc.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
System Requirements (Minimum Configuration)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
> Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, or 7
> Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon 1 GHz or higher (512 MB RAM)
> 500 MB for program files
> 1 GB for video files (5 GB recommended)
> SVGA Graphics Card (with min. 32MB RAM, min. Resolution 1024x600 & 16-bit high-color)
> DVD Drive
> 16-bit Sound Card
> Microsoft compatible Mouse
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will say, this program has multiple facets to it; image optimization, transitions, 3D effect
templates, 1-click animations, titles and texts, zooms and camera movements, decorative
elements and superimposed videos with cartoons, speech bubbles, costume accessories,
frames, etc.

You also get multimedia opening and closing edits and can dub your own music from CD and
MP3s. You are also able to provide commentary using a microphone with options for sound
optimizations and enhancements.

The Amazon blurb on this page has plenty more info for you to peruse. Compare it with other
programs and you will find that this one is one of the best in features, extras, and ease of
use. I did compare, and for the money it is the best deal out there.

I gave this program 5 stars because it is what it says it is and does it well. Getting used to
the format of the program is always a learning piece but using the tools is mostly intuitive
once you know how to get around the interface, especially if you have used any kind of slide
show program in the past.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Disappointment
Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2010
Like another reviewer here (D. W. Moore "Enthusiastic Amazon Fan"), I found this program using Google searches for lists of the best photo slideshow software and discovered that Photostory Deluxe was in most top 10 lists and at the top of several. At first glance the program appeared to be capable of a great variety of presentation styles in creating slideshows either manually or using an easy to operate wizard. So, I created a slideshow and right away found the program to be sorely lacking in producing a slideshow with even a reasonable degree of video clarity.

Now, I am technologically sophisticated enough to know that transforming high resolution photo images into a much lower resolution standard definition DVD will not produce a sharp image when played on a 50" high definition television. The quality of the DVD video produced, though, was so poor that even identifying a person in any particular image was challenging.

Initially frustrated, I then began modifying images in the slideshow in various ways and tinkering with some of the many, many options available in producing the slideshow file, attempting to see if I could even create something that would look decent on a 22" computer monitor. I could not. Next, I attempted to obtain tech support through the Magix website, with turned out to be a total waste of time, as a previous reviewer noted. Emails to Magix tech support seeking help with my issues went unanswered. I searched the web, hoping to find other resources available to help but found absolutely nothing.

So, finally today I gave up, returned the program to Amazon, and hope to obtain a refund for half the price I paid ($77) for this inferior product, though I'm not sure if I'll receive half of that, since I noticed Amazon has dropped the price to about $48. (Edit [4/12/2011]: Amazon was so kind as to refund my purchase price in full, perhaps because they understand this product is seriously lacking. Thanks Amazon!)

In summary, this program is worthy perhaps to produce slideshows for internet viewing in small windows but has little to no value for creating slideshows to be viewed on large screen televisions. I've already taken Mr. D. W. Moore "Enthusiastic Amazon Fan's" recommendation and have been trying Photodex's ProShow Gold. Unlike Photostory, ProShow Gold provides as many functions and options in a much simpler to use interface, the manual and help contents are straightforward and easy to understand, the program's slideshow output files are much sharper for viewing on large screen televisions, and the manufacturer, Photodex, actually answers tech support emails.

Thank you, Mr. D.W. Moore, for suggesting ProShow Gold as an alternative to Photostory. :-)

(Edit [4/12/2011]: The following comment, since deleted, on my review was recently posted on this website:

[begin comment] you'd sound less like a shill for photodex if you did not pump the product so much. something tells me photodex is paying people to post stuff on message boards. [end comment]

I will unequivocally state that I have never received any form of compensation whatsoever from Photodex for recommending their product. I only recommend ProShow Gold as an alternative to Photostory because I've found ProShow to be a far superior program for creating slideshows.)
