3.0 out of 5 stars Knoppix Linux 7.0
Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2014
I decided to give Knoppix a try due to severe spyware and malware infections on my Windows installation, which the latest and best Norton -and the latest Microsoft Malware Removal Tool - were unable to detect let alone remove. I run an old Dell Inspiron notebook and people with other hardware may get completely different results. Knoppix Live CD booted up, found my sound and graphics hardware, and Internet cable (don’t know if it would have been able to detect the wireless device). It’s Chromium browser was able to play Youtube but could not enlarge to full screen. However, the install to HD option completely failed to work, meaning that Knoppix, without the ability to save settings, bookmarks, etc. could only serve for emergency Internet access purposes. Downloaded free Debian and then Fedora linux, both installed to HD, but their Iceweasal and Konqueror browsers were unable to play Youtube at all. Then I downloaded Slax Live CD, burned to CD, and its Firefox browser was able to play Youtube and in full screen as well. Slax Live CD can save settings but I also got it to run from HD via installation as Fedora root user. Slax is terrific: outstanding browser, super file manager, great text editor and other useful stuff, everything I could ever want except spell checking. Works a lot like Windows, no prior Linux experience required except if you want a spell checker, but I’m gladly accepting the nuisance of online spell check in exchange for an efficient virus-free environment.
