Amazon was great. Package arrived quickly. Trouble was when I opened it. This Rosetta Stone product was about as old as the actual Rosetta Stone. I could not even put it on to my computer's hard drive in order to use it. I would have had be remain chained to an external drive. The RS description did not indicate how out-dated their package was, and they should have. And once telling the customer this, they should have sold it at a much lower price, nay, given it away. For this package is well passed its sell-by date, it should be extinct. In short, it is an ex-parrot, er, program. Amazon does not accept return of open computer programs. But I called them and explained the situation that I received something that would serve better as a paper weight than a workable language program. They emailed me a label to return the thing, and I have received credit. Thanks, Amazon. Rosetta Stone, you should review your products now and then!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Learn

I've learned more Welsh in two days with this package than I had learned in the previous several years using [or rather trying to use] audio tapes and written texts.

This is an incredibly effective way to learn. It's as though you had been forced to forget your native language [which in my case is English] and dropped into a place where people know how to speak only Welsh. [I'm sure the software works the same way for other languages as well.]

The process is pretty much painless:
    1. You see pictures of people, places, and things, or of activities, and listen to a native Welsh speaker pronounce the name of the thing, or a brief sentence describing an action, while simultaneously seeing the Welsh words you're listening to printed out, so you can compare look and sound. There's no translation into or out of your own language, just programmed exposure to the new one, written and heard.
    2. You see pictures and match them to the written word and the sound, over and over till you get it right.
    3. You hear the sound and see the written word, and match those to the pictures. (In other words, the opposite of what you did in item 2.)
    4. You practice saying the sounds back into a (provided) microphone, and the program analyzes your sound production and compares it to the native speaker's pronunciation. You see graphs of your speech and the native speaker's speech, and you can try over and over again till your speech matches the native speaker's both aurally and graphically.
    5. When you're ready, you take a test to make sure you've 'got it.'
    6. When you achieve a score that is acceptable to you, you proceed to the next exercise.

That's it! That's all there is to it. And you really do learn fast. New vocabulary is introduced at a predictable pace, associated with words you've already learned. You basically learn from context: by eliminating the words, and details in the picture, that you already know, you're left with the new word, and the one detail in the picture that you didn't already know a word for. It's like magic. You pretty much stop thinking in your own language, and start associating the pictures directly with the Welsh words, and vice versa.

    I love it.

In only three hours of practice over two days, I can now get 100% correct matches on all the items in the first three lessons, and I never have to stop and think of the equivalent English and do any mental translation. I'm learning Welsh the way people who grow up in Wales learn it--by being exposed to concepts and sounds that match up with each other.

It's the 'Me Tarzan You Jane' school of language learning, and it works!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incompatible with OS X Lion

I love this program. I learned a lot of Welsh and was in the middle of my studies when Mac OS X Lion came out. I downloaded it and installed it. As ya do. Little did I know, Rosetta Stone V2, Welsh Level 1 is unsupported by Lion. I have called Rosetta Stone and they tell me that the program has not yet been updated and they don't have a forecast date. I am devastated.
