5.0 out of 5 stars Great Basic Information!

I'm almost embarrassed at the title as the "Dummies" books always seemed like a joke to me. This CD book is no joke and is written by a professional teacher in basic and totally understandable way. It includes video examples that are great. One of the cool things about it is the ability to choose the kind of voice: male female, low, high, etc. used in the audio examples. Makes the whole thing seem personalized. There are great basic drawings even showing a bit of anatomy to demonstrate breathing techniques and tongue placement for good vowel sounds and tone production. If you need a good basic home study. This is darned good!

In the first portion of the lessons, it gives an opportunity to use a microphone to show whether you can replicate pitches sung to you. Again, a cool thing. I did find that I needed to purchase an exterior microphone rather than depending on the internal microphone. That was worth the purchase, however.

The first thing I noticed is in the description, it states "Over 70 hit songs from artists such as the John Lennon, Diana Ross and others". This is not all true. There are 36 songs. The second, very disappointing item on the list is there is no option to play the accompaniment, which is MIDI, while it is listening to you sing. (interactive feature). In the help section it states the interactive feature automatically turns off when playing the melody because the melody interferes with the interactive feature. This means you have to sing without the melody (Sight Singing). There are microphones that are directional and can be set to not interfere. I have a device with a built in microphone that tells me the pitch I'm singing and it also plays the sound. This is 2013, not 1990. Technology has come a long way and this application falls way short by today's standards. No one that is a beginner will know how create an E4 note by seeing it on the treble clef. No one has perfect pitch and knows what an E sounds like without hearing it in the melody. I think it is pretty important to be able to play the melody and listen to the student at the same time. If you want beginning vocal training that doesn't require singing without an accomplishment, this isn't for you. There are Karaoke games online that work very well if you want melody training.

There are other interface issues that are very frustrating. If you click on a note to actually use the interactive feature, it gets in a loop and will only play part of the song. I've not found a way to get it turn off that feature without restarting the application. I have their other products (keyboards and guitar) and I'm very happy with them. This is a disappointment. I was considering buying their Singing Method application, I'm glad I only lost 1/2 of that price if it is merely an expanded version of this.

Too little for the price. It was over so soon that at first I thought it was a mistake. Just one song is a known one...

Ok. Check the title - we are working with dummies here! Somehow I installed it several times and now I can't open it. There is a number to call, but I haven't had the inclination to deal with why/how I messed the program up.
I did get to go part way through the introduction, and wondered where the instruction was. I can only think I hadn't started the actual lessons. I did have fun with what I could get done. Hello! Dummies! Gotta make it clear and easy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product!

Singing for Dummies is great product for anyone who is considering on learning to sing. I rated it four stars for the price. Once one come to realization that their singing isn't singing, you haven't waisted a paid instructor's time and you money. For example, I am a musician but I've always wanted to sing. I purchased Singing for Dummies last month and I'm still trying to work on my vocal pitch. However, my son tried and he's already singing actual songs provided by the software and he's already in the advanced vocal skills section. I guess I'll let my guitar sing for me then. Also, I like the fact that the software is Mac (Mountain Lion) and PC (Win 7) compatible. I would recommend this product to anyone who feels that their calling is to sing. Even for someone like me, if you find that a friend or someone in you family have discovered through Singing for Dummies that they are a natural at singing, its really okay because Singing For Dummies makes it fun to learn anyway.

ELEMENTARY BUT GOOD, SOLID, BASIC INFO THAT EVERYONE SHOULD BE TAUGHT BEFORE MOVING ON TO MORE SPECIALIZED LESSONS COULD BE MORE IN DEPTH BUT THIS IS EASILY FIXED BY BUYING SOMETHING MORE ADVANCED OR LOOKING FOR 'FREE' INTERNET LESSONS. FOUNDATIONAL. RECCOMEND FOR TRUE BEGINNERS!

It's not what I expected. I need something to tell you if you are in tune or not. Tell the type of voice you have. This just have you singing songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent software for beginners.

I purchased this item as a beginner singer to supplement my teacher guided vocal training. I would recommend this software to any beginner. The breathing exercises are very useful and easy to follow. The pitch matching exercises really helped me when I was practicing alone since I do not play the piano. The instructor is obviously a classically trained opera singer so her singing voice is rather operatic but you can choose to sing along with just the piano. The metronome tool is also helpful. There are several customizable features that are great when using the interactive features. It is very user friendly and I saw improvement in my singing rather quickly when practicing several times a week with this software. I am an alto so some of the songs were a little high for my comfort level. The software pretty much breaks voices into soprano/alto and tenor/bass.
