I completely agree with other reviewers of Jumpstart's 3D Virtual World: The Legend of Grizzly McGuffin in that the company does not do a good enough job warning consumers that the CD is really a sample of the game requiring a subscription. This alone has people infuriated, and rightly so. However, the game is amazing. I am a former elementary school teacher and I purchased the game "blindly" for my preschool son. He loved it right off the bat and continued to work through all the levels through the spring of his kindergarten year. We have no video games in our home and this was one of the first computer games we bought. It taught him basic computer skills. He was able to negotiate the game with a mouse, a touch pad on my laptop, and now has a decent keyboarding background. Once started and familiar, he was able to work independently! Jumpstart does an amazing job combining fun activities (e.g., racing other characters, catching objects, hunting for various items, producing artwork) with academic activities. The academic activities are a mandatory part of the game but they are so much fun, that they are irresistable. This particular game is goal oriented. The child is a scout and tries to earn badges. In order to slowly earn a badge, the child must perform various academic and nonacademic tasks. The academic tasks are right on target for a bright preschooler or a kindergartener. Some skills will be easier than others and the tasks get progressively more difficult as the child advances through the game. My son loved it and I have been totally pleased.

For parents, it gives a report on how well the child is doing on specific academic tasks. If you subscribe, you will get regular emails as the child's records get uploaded and analyzed. I could tell what things my son was avoiding and would subsequently look into it. If it weren't for jumpstart, I wouldn't have known that his basic subtraction skills were lacking (he can count to 1000s by 5, 10s, 100s,etc. so I would never would have thought). Because of Jumpstart I can tackle issues at home (not on the computer). I have been very impressed with the product despite the initial irritation with the subscription business. I found a coupon online for free membership for a couple of months for my son to try the other levels. He had the same enthusiasm for it as he did in the beginning. I waited a while (ignoring the sleeve pulling from my boy) before I purchased a subscription. I finally did and have never once regretted it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware..subscription service needed to access all games!

I am quite disappointed by this Jump Start product, mostly because there is not much content on the CD itself and in order to complete the game, you have to purchase an additional subscription ($7.95 a month). Upon installation, the software requires one to register with their website, which I did. The last screen of this installation tricks the customer into thinking you HAVE to purchase the monthly or alternative one year subscription. You don't. When that last installation screen shows, you can simply close the screen by clicking on the little "x" button in the upper right hand corner of the screen and the game finishes installing correctly. We did not purchase the subscription when we installed the game.

However, since we didn't purchase the subscription, my 5-year-old finished all the games and tasks within 2 to 3 hours that came on the disk. There are many other enticing levels and worlds he wanted to unlock on the disk, but couldn't because we didn't sign up to pay for the subscription. I sent an e-mail complaint to JumpStart and they gave me a free one month subscription. My son is really enjoying the rest of the games, earning more rewards, unlocking new levels, etc, but frankly, I am VERY disappointed. We should NOT have to pay extra to complete a game that we already purchased.

So, buyer beware! This is basically a glorified advertisement with a few teaser games included. I think this is false advertising at its best.

This should definitely by on your holiday list! The game is fun and educational, which is a difficult combination to get right. The price is right too! I plan on getting a few of the JumpStart games as gifts for my friend's kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth 3x what I paid!

I bought this game for my 4 year old about 6 months ago for $7. I don't remember if I had to register online but other wise I haven't had to get online at all. My kids are in love with this game and now switch between this and the free [...]. They learn so much from it I hate having to end computer time. Letters, numbers, following directions, after level one is completed they can even buy pets which need to be taken care of.
They are almost onto level 3 and it hasn't asked me to upgrade yet. It's kept my 4 year old son busy non-stop for months with no idea he's learning a thing. If I got up tomorrow and it refused to go any farther I'd be heart broken, but it would still be worth every penny.
The jumpstart titles I've bought, both old and new, have all been invaluable in teaching my kids. For $7-$15, totally worth it! And like I said, after months of constant play, they haven't asked me for a credit card yet.

2.0 out of 5 stars great game, but false advertising

Bought this game for my 5 year old and he loves it. BUT, no where on the box did it tell you that after a limited amount of play, you words have to pay $8 month for a membership online, in order to continue to play the game. My son is very disappointed because he is at a standstill and we won't pay the additional money. I love the educational aspects, but don't think it's right of the company to sell you a PC game, without saying that there are additional costs if you want to play the whole game.
