5.0 out of 5 stars FTM 2010 Deluxe ... a Great Tool for the Genealogy Hobbyist!!
Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2010
Recording family genealogy is one of my "bucket list" items that will hopefully help current and future generations when some family members, like myself, finally get around to wanting to know more about where they came from. As did other genealogy hobbyists, I saw the need for a data management tool very early. I have since been a Family Tree Maker user for many years dating back to the early 1990's. What I like most about Family Tree Maker is the efforts through the years to continually maintain and improve the software with new, reliable features and functionality. Before recently upgrading from FTM 2006, my family genealogy work had taken a backseat to other interests. But now being semi-retired and with renewed interest to get on with my "bucket list", the features in FTM 2010 Deluxe made it time to upgrade. What a great decision! I especially like the new screen designs that show on one screen information that took multiple screens in FTM 2006, the improved internet research tools, the improved source documentation features, and the DNA project which may be the only means left to determine my GGgrandfather's ancestors. Anyone interested in becoming a long-term genealogy hobbyist should seriously consider Family Tree Maker as a means for collecting and preserving his or her family history treasures.

    1.0 out of 5 stars SHAMEFUL ! ! !

I have lost my faith. I bought the family tree maker softwhere, and it automatically takes your tree information and downloads it to Ancestry databases with your permission without you actuallly knowing that you gave them permission to do so. When activating the allgedly gracious 3 month trail (time varies with product purchased)subscription the period they specified you dont get full access as described in the information included. I have been locked out of 90% of what is claims I should have access to. Granted, the net has it's issues and granted servers have their issues, but ALL those issues are generated by human touch! It is human touch htat sets up the programming to BLOCK information based on your searches. I have noticed this also.

I have been using Family tree maker since it was first out on Floppy disc. I have ben thru various upgrades. It cannot handle unusal marraiges, the softwhere dies when it has over 1000+ people in its tree. As a matter of fact when it got to 753 people in the tree it failed twice, loosing alot of information that had been painstakingly added by hours including hard to get info & photographs. Yes I had backed it all up on the safe side but when you go to re use what was saved it says not accessable doesnt exist and it wont let you merge trees.

I know there are some talented programmers & softwhere writerss out there who can charge a premium price for the family tree making software and genealogists will glady pay for it if it preforms right and can handle capacity!

I continue to use the old software. Ancestry, you failed big time on this and I am disheartend to say how ashamed I am that I gave your product as a gift, only to have that professional tell me everything that was wrong with the software. That coupled with my own experiance I would not recomend this. IF any one did buy it to use it
add your family in small bunches or branches and seperate maternal from patrnal so that the sofware doesnt fail or crash your computer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work well with my 32-bit system...
Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2015
I tired of frequent crashes with FTM16, especially after upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 (32-bit). Read available reviews, which seemed to indicate that the 2010 version would be best on this rather limited system: 1.6 Atom processor, 4 GB RAM (3.25 GB usable). Now I get frequent freezes that can only be remedied by shutting down the program and restarting. The changes in the program are a mixed bag, some good and some bad. I can't print out family books as well as I could with FRM16. If I'd known what I was getting into, I would've just kept soldiering on with the old software.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Much New
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2010
I have been using FTM for almost 20 years. Unlike most reviewers, I thought that the new version (2009) was a great update; much more 'web friendly', and I've enjoyed using it.
I updated to the 2010 version because, I must admit, I needed the 3 months of Ancestry (I bought the Deluxe edition), but also because there WERE a few flaws in the 2009 product that I had informed them of a year ago, and was looking to have fixed. NO GO. The basic function of the program has not changed at all; it MAY integrate more closely with Ancestry, but I do not have an Ancestry webpage (my file is too big to be uploaded to Ancestry), and I don't use the publishing features either, which are also supposed to be updated.
But the basics (including the flaws) are the same.
Before I ordered, I even emailed FTM to ask when the 2011 edition would be out. They gave me the dumb act, and then, within a month of my purchase, I see references to the 'new' 2011 product.
So much for keeping your customers happy!

I am brand new to genealogy and Family Tree Maker makes it simple. It is very user friendly except I don't like the way it saves. It saves a new file every time instead of overwriting the old. Without using "help" or a tutorial I figured out how to use it. I also like the way it links up with [...] (don't like paying for that of course). Although I haven't begun to tap into what the program can do, I love it so far.
