I had another Magix Movie Editor which was pretty good - It was lost when my old hard drive failed...so I bought this version...I have since discovered that it is nothing like the other one. While it does (sorta) work like the old version.. this is definitely a "Bare Bones" product. Almost all the features that made it good (fades . titles and other effects)..are now really cut back to like one or two in each category.( instead of sometimes as many as 10) and the ones that ARE still there don't work smoothly or hang.

This is obviously attempt to get you to buy more library's that dovetail into the program so they can make MORE MONEY. I think this really sucks and I am pretty disgusted. Of course, if you were a first time buyer and had no previous knowledge, you probably wouldn't even realize that you were scammed,,,

It would block copy rights on my own video taken from my own camera. I downloaded and I want the money return-wasted my time trying to make it work, is useless.

so, why the positive review? It took me about half an hour to learn how to edit with this program. I may have to edit and update this review if I figure out how to navigate better. The biggest flaw is there isn't a pause button like Sony Vegas has. The pause button is what really made editing for anyone easy. The tutorials don't explain how to edit well either. I think Magix is missing the bus with this, and I know they do read the reviews, and respect the fact that they don't put out fake ones.

From my point of view, I see the 3 biggest flaws with this software are as follows:
1.THE NO PAUSE BUTTON ISSUE
2.THE HORRIBLE TUTORIALS
3.NO SETTING MARKERS TO PROJECT LIKE IN VEGAS
In fact, I've even watched tutorials online by YT users, and saw that they edited by hitting the plus button to pinpoint an exact point to place the marker. The best way to teach others how to edit is by using the "Set Chapter Marker" Button(as well as using the plus button on the bottom right). After you get the exact spot by moving the marker, you can easily use the razor blade to either remove start, remove end or split. The "Set Chapter Marker" is everything you really need to know
because you can edit right at that point. The fades are varied as well, and are extremely user friendly.

Post editing: If you go to the help menu, you can download FREE menu templates, so when you pop in the disc, you can see a nice presentation with video movement and music. There are a varied assortment of templates, and I like them very much. They are very professional or fun looking depending on the mood you're looking for.

MP4: I mainly use this program to edit with my Kodak Playfull and Kodak Playsport. I have an older version of Sony Vegas (6.0), and have read in a couple of places that the newer version of Vegas has the same problems with MP4, as the older versions. I have no way of verifying this, but this is the main reason I went with Magix.
I'm very very happy with Magix, although during the first half hour I was extremely frustrated. If you follow my advice from this review, you'll save yourself a lot of heartache. It really is great editing software.

I'm going to edit using the Storyboard. I will update with my findings.

Bonus VIDEO SOUND CLEANING LAB not compatible with Windows 8

As I don't use Movie Edit Pro, this is about my experience with Video Sound Cleaning Lab, which is included as a bonus item with Movie Edit Pro 2013.

The box says compatible with Windows Vista / 7 / XP, and the editing software product name says "2013" so I optimistically and wrongly assumed Video Sound Cleaning Lab could run under Windows 8, as most Windows 7 software will. But Video Sound Cleaning Lab didn't run for me on Windows 8 (freezes right on startup and requires the Task Manager to dismiss) and it didn't work in Windows 7 or Windows XP compatibility modes.

Then I found this:

Unfortunately this software is currently not compatible with Windows 8 and there are no plans for a patch to be released.
You can only use the software on Windows XP, Vista or 7.

So if you are interested in the bonus "Video Sound Cleaning Lab Full Version worth $59.99" please note that Magix says it will not run on Windows 8 and probably never will. And that's unfortunate because it looks like a useful product.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 2013

Magix released "Video Sound Cleaning Lab 2014" and I am running this program on Windows 8.1 with no problems.

I am a film maker and media student and have been using Magix Movie Edit Pro since 2007. I have used software across all price levels and experience levels. Everything from Avid to Pinnacle, to Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premier, Vegas, and others that people have never heard of, and I must say that this software is my go-to package. If you take the time to play with it, you'll discover that it has virtually all the same abilities as software that costs 10 times as much, and can do it just as well. I just used this to edit AVCHD video for a short film for my senior film project, and it worked fantastic. If you want decent software legally without wanting to take out a loan, this will do just fine. This is the 4th version of Magix Movie Edit pro I've owned, and it has never done me wrong. This version is considerably faster than others in the past in terms of rendering. It's interface is quite similar to Final Cut X, for those of you familiar with working with it. Be sure to mind the default preferences on start-up, some features such as the separate audio tracks are turned off by default. Tons of file support.
