Very disappointed

I was very disappointed with this product. Their biggest selling point is the live cloud coverage, not a big deal. It does not zoom far enough in to make any sort of impact. When they state "find route" they mean drawing a straight line from point A to point B, there aren't even any roads. The only positive item is the famous routes.

I am a weather junkie. Whether its storm chasing, photographing the weather, watching storm documentaries, reading weather related books, surfing weather related websites or just relaxing on my back porch while storms go raging by, I always have been and always will be a weather junkie. So as you can imagine when I saw this piece of software for my beloved Mac, well I just couldn't resist. This was actually the runner up in the Best Mac OS X User Experience category for the 2005 Apple Design Awards. The Apple design awards are always reliable, in other words if an application even gets nominated then you can be assured its at the top of the class and surely deserving of your purchase. So anyways it was the Apple Design Awards that tipped me off to this product and I purchased it immediately. I have now been using this app for close to 4 years and the bottom line is that this is an fantastic app.

If you do some research on this product you will see that it gets its fair share of low scores. You will hear people complaining that everything this app offers is already available for free on the net. You will hear horror stories about people not being able to connect to the weather service and last but not least you will hear people complain that it just isnt deep enough. Now I can only rate my experience with this product and my experience has been practically flawless. I have had absolutely NO problem connecting with the weather service and again I have been using this for close to 4 years. In fact I haven't had even a single instance of not being able to connect with the weather service. Its worked like clockwork for 4 years running.

As for the argument that everything is already available on the net for free. Well this is in part true. You can go to NOAA or the SPC and get all the weather data you want, for free. They have satellite imagery covering the entire planet and its always up to date. The bottom line is there are an absolute boatload of weather related websites on the net and most of them are accessible and free and to be honest I still visit many of those sites on an almost daily basis. So why do I continue to use this piece of software. Well quite simply because its far more enjoyable than any of those other sites and it allows me to access alot of that data without having to go to those websites. Lets face it, NOAA and the SPC websites do not allow me to run these maps and models as my desktop. 3D weather globe does. NOAA and the SPC also do not use cutting edge graphics and understandably so. They are scientific sites and the pictures available are pictures taken directly from satellites. 3D weather globe takes the current weather data and projects it over high quality maps. It really makes it far more visually stimulating. If there is something in particular I am looking for and it happens to be something that 3D weather globe cannot give me, well I still have the option of going to all of those websites. I do not view one as a replacement for the other. Instead I look at them as complimentary and I have gotten spoiled on having both. So the bottom line is when referring to the actual weather data, this program does not give you anything that isnt already available on the net for free. The data can be gotten from any one of a hundred websites. That however isnt what makes this app special. Its what the app does with that weather data that makes it special. Why do I want to go surfing for my weather data when I can have it collected for me and displayed on absolutely gorgeous maps running as my desktop. Again none of those websites can do that and imo that one thing alone is worth the price.

It is important to note that MacKiev just recently released a new deluxe version of this application and it addresses many of the complaints that people had with this version. In fact even tho I gave this app 4 stars, I would definitely skip this version and buy the new deluxe version. Its simply a much deeper program and many of the things that made this app so great are vastly improved making the new version just that much better. For example the deluxe version now has views that are ten times more detailed than before as they are now using the absolute highest resolution NASA maps available of the entire planet, just 100 meters to a pixel vs. a kilometer to a pixel in the original edition. The difference is amazing. In the deluxe version you can now tilt the earths surface thus enabling you to see the earths surface in 3D. Some more improvements include real time weather effects, 30,000 new locations in the database, a new route manager including more than a hundred famous routes from explorers like Nemo and Cook, a database of past hurricanes including their routes, and last but not least you now have the ability to view celestial maps for those who want to learn the constellations or even see what the sky looked like at a certain date in the past. Overall its a wealth of improvements and I would easily give the deluxe version a 5 star rating. It is 20 dollars more but its absolutely worth it. For those who dont want to shell out that additional cash, this version is still a fantastic app and well worth the money.

While this is a great app for adults, its is simply indispensable for your children. My son was absolutely mesmerized by this app and it eventually led to a whole new resect and outlook for him in regards to the weather. That in itself made this purchase a thousand time more valuable. Before I purchased this app he had as much interest in the weather as most 12 year olds do. In other words the only interest he had in the weather was the effect it had on his ability to go out and play with his friends. This app really changed all of that and he has since taken a much bigger interest in the subject. I actually caught him last week reading one of my weather books, a fairly complicated one that deals with weather mapping. It was this application that really sparked this recent interest. You simply cant put a value on such things.

Again I can only give you my experience with this product and my experience has been nothing but positive. In fact out of the hundreds of applications that I have used at one time or another on my Mac, 3D weather would most assuredly be one of a small handful of apps that I not only used the most but also had the best experience with overall. I highly recommend this app and in regards to the new deluxe version, well I cannot possibly give that new improved version of this app a higher recommendation. It is simply amazing. By the way this app isnt just for people like myself who are really interested in the weather. Even if your interest in the weather doesn't go much past seeing daily or weekly forecasts, this app will still be a great purchase. Who knows, it just may spark an interest in this subject matter that you didn't even know existed. It did with my son.
