3.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm going to say this...
Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2010
I can't believe I'm going to say nicer things about a Microsoft product than most other people are saying, but Word 2007 is not really all that bad.

True, the "ribbon" is very confusing at first. Microsoft continually seems to be ignorant of the most important aspect of a GUI: visual memory. Move things around, and people are lost. For a while, at least.

I was forced to use this version for a work project, and it was slow going for the first day. I saw that the ribbon takes a very bad idea from previous versions (the "personalized menus", where they hide half the commands to make things "simpler") and expands upon it, effectively forcing you to use that model. But they have chosen the exposed commands well, and once you learn where things are, it does seem to be faster to use than the old interface.

I always used to customize my Word interface with button bars that had the commands I wanted. Normal text tools at the top, table tools down the left side, drawing tools down the right side. You can't do any of that sort of thing now; all you get to customize is a tiny button bar above the ribbon. But I found that I only needed to add a couple of buttons to that bar and I didn't miss my old button bars, once I learned where things are in the new arrangement. (Although I had no call to use drawing tools in this project.) I don't like giving up so much vertical screen space to the ribbon, but that is my only real complaint about it.

The really good news for most people is that you can download a compatibility pack from Microsoft's site and keep on using your older version of Word with the new 2007 file format.

And that new file format should prove useful in a big way because it's based on XML. With older versions of Word, when a document became corrupted you could usually fix it by exporting it to XML format and then re-importing it into Word. Hopefully (and I don't know how to test this) making XML the default format will prevent a lot of document corruption.

Word is still not the best word processor. But Word dominates the market so much it is practically the only word processor. It still does stupid things to your work that shouldn't happen and shouldn't be so hard to fix. But once I got used to the ribbon I felt that it was quicker than the old interface, and I have hopes that the new file format will prevent some serious headaches.

1.0 out of 5 stars My users almost killed me when I installed this product
Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2010
I had to upgrade some of my users to this product to allow them to view a highly formatted document which would not display correctly in word 2003 or Open Office. I will just put it this way- it did not go well. People don't really like change for the sake of change.

That's all I have to say. Don't upgrade unless you have to.

2.0 out of 5 stars Do not "upgrade" from Word '03
Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2009
People need to know that they should not "upgrade" to Word 2007, nor should they accept a new PC package with this version of Word. I would be hesitant to purchase 2010 as well.

I use Word 07 to produce medical reports. The same reports that I did on Word '03 for many years are now a mess in Word '07. It is completely impossible to build a report following the standard format of left-margin heading and numbering with text positioned two spaces after the number, a hanging margin of .2 and justified text. In Word '03, you just make a list and drag the whole thing to where you want it. But in '07, it turns out looking like a pile of junk - not to mention - the more time an MT spends trying to line up letters, the less money we are making. To even come close, there is a convoluted and unintuitive procedure that I don't have time for.

If this means nothing to you, then at least consider the price. Amazon sells Word '03 for $300 and Word '07 for $179. What better indication do you need to tell you that this version is not preferred by anyone?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice New Interface
Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2007
Microsoft has made extreme changes to the user interfaces of their Office products for 2007, and change is good. With the new "Ribbon" interface, the most commonly used tools and commands are right up front and easily accessible. While the changes are extreme, the new interface is fairly simple to learn and the new "ribbon" toolbar actually enhances productivity once you are used to it.

Several reviews below this one have railed against Office 2007 because they could not learn the new interface, but I was up and running with this software in a matter of minutes. Power users will find some of the more powerful tools and options a little harder to find, but end users will find everything they need much easier than in previous versions.

All told, while I don't think the new version is perfect, I do feel that the interface is a huge leap forward (not backward) for Microsoft. As with any software, your own experience will likely be different, but it is definitely worth going through the demos on Microsoft's website.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good.

MS Word 2003 is much better, and I am using it now. I can use Word 2007 if I'm forced to, but routine tasks still evade me. For example, to make a document password protected is beyond difficult. Despite a lot of research I still can't do it. I will not update to newer versions, because they are as complicated (or more) as this version. What is Microsoft smoking?
