1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless!

First you will have to install the Academic Fitness Control panel and register it. They want your name, phone number, address, email, so you do all this. Now you must log in. Your login ID is your email and the password you chose. You probably have to have it sent to your email though to get in. Then you can find out out of ALL products listed if you select your product under the heading the install button will turn green. Be careful, it wants to install trials of stuff you don't have a code for. So you select your product and install it. It will prompt you to enter code 2 from your software. You may notice that the button to enter a key is grayed out. Typing in the key does not change that? Do you wait 14 days and see if it will take your code then or what? Maybe you decide to test drive the product. You open it up and click on a word, silence, a definition appears, more writing, no sound, no word is spoken. There is no button for sound. It was suppose to say the word. Maybe you try the online version it provides if you thoroughly search threw the menues at the top. You see a random word of the day. You click on the word. You are told you need a plugin, the link to download the plugin you need for your browser is bad. So you still have not heard a word yet. By now you will have personally seen to your children's vocabulary enrichment for the next 20 years (as in they probably won't be allowed to even utter those new words for at least 20 years!) Sad to say, the only useful thing provided by this product is a long list of products to avoid at all costs!

2.0 out of 5 stars Does NOT Work WITHIN Microsoft Word as Advertised
Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2010
In and of itself, the product is great. I had no problems installing it onto my computer and it runs without the disc in the disc drive. My problem is, it was advertised, and I quote, "Installs quickly onto your hard drive for instant access anytime-- including from Microsoft Word". This is not true. After numerous attempts to install the software into Microsoft Word, I contacted Merriam-Webster's tech support. I was told that this version does not have the macros needed to work within Microsoft Word. In addition, I was told that the older version does contain the macros and will install within Microsoft Word. I was very very disappointed because I made the purchase for that specific purpose, as advertised by Merriam Webster. Now, I'm stuck with a product that does not produce what it stated it would do.

3.0 out of 5 stars I think this work only with internet
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2010
I am very frustrated with this product. I have bought it recently and put it in my computer and the only thing that work was a bonus for fifteen days. Every time i try to run it i am asked for a code, and when i put it in the system say it expired. The main problem is, i think, we need to be hooked to the internet in order to make it run. I would like to know if this software only work when you are connect to the internet.I will keep trying to see if i have not loose my money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best and not the worst computer dictionary I've used
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2010
People have different approaches to using dictionaries and for this reason it is unlikely that any computer dictionary will prove satisfying to all people or even most people. Using my Oxford English Dictionary drives me nuts. It is clunky and antiquated. I have several other dictionaries on my computer and each of them both irritate and please me.

On the whole, the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary & Thesaurus 11th edition has more pluses than minuses.

The interface is relatively easy to grasp intuitively which is good because the sparse online documentation for using the program is difficult to find. And when I say online, I mean internet accessible. Look hard: to get to it requires finding an unadorned link.

Load and search times are pretty quick.

Once you figure out how to do it - and the process is not intuitive - you actually do have a variety of search methods The publisher says there are 21 search options. I found only 19 that I could identify. Among the search options are rhyming, crossword, anagram and homophones, all of which can occasionally come in handy.

There are many audio pronunciations and they are clearly enunciated.

There is also a spelling helper: type in your nearest approximation of a word and the program. It works pretty well.

The thesaurus is actually a separate program. It is acceptable though no match for something like Rodale's Synonym Finder.

You can set a hot key sequence so that when you highlight a word in your word processing or email software, the dictionary can be invoked. Unlike some computer dictionaries, you can copy the correctly spelled word from the dictionary to your document.

The biggest minus is the silly activation program the publisher has. You must install it and it only serves to keep track of which of the publisher's applications you have installed. The dictionary is also a bit slow to load. The lack of useful documentation is also lamentable.

On the whole, a good dictionary. The corpus of definitions is small compared to some, but all the words I tried were found. There is also allegedly a program that will download a subset of the dictionary to your iPod, which I did not try.
