1.0 out of 5 stars Premium is good, but the Business part is worthless

I have used Premium for years and still find it very easy to use for my personal taxes (which are complicated due to rental property and consulting). Works well and easy to go from year to year. However the Business program is nearly impossible to use. The interview does not work (screen questions mismatched with options). I called their technical line, spent over an hour trying to convince them there was an issue and was finally able to get them to see it. In December. Still no fix in February. Does not handle the scenario of short term rentals/ LLC ownership at all, with no easy way to get to the right form (8825) to enter the data. Finally bite the bullet last night and ordered TT. Much more expensive but in 2 hours my complicated taxes were done and K1s were created. Bottom line: Don't waste your time on this version--if you only need personal or simple business buy premium. If you need complicating business buy TT.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Intuit

Overall the best software for self-prepared business and personal tax returns. Over the decades we've used accountants, Turbo Tax and H&R Block, and by far the way to go is H&R Block. Unless you have a lot of complicated transactions, accountants mostly just fill in the blanks anyway. No real advice for the future, so why pay all that money? Turbo Tax was great until Intuit got a hold of it and started charging ridiculous money for every version. With H&R Block Premium and Business (their most expensive basic package without extra e-filing), for our application, we cover all the bases simply and quickly. I prepare taxes for all three of our businesses (two LLC's and one sole proprietor) and our personal, federal and state, in just a couple hours. The only thing that irritates is that the newer versions only run on Windows 10. Fortunately, one of our businesses is for computers and we have a shop with several computers running several different Windows versions. Some of the earlier versions had graphics issues but they have since ironed those out. Economical and thorough for our purposes.

Pros:

The software does what it is intended to do, which is help you complete your taxes and file them.

It has improved over the years in terms of user friendliness, though it remains behind the other leading brand.

It is almost always cheaper than its competitor, TT.

Downloading the software works, if you follow the steps as listed when you purchase the software. One previous purchaser did a nice job of sharing a link to where you can find this program to download it.

I share it here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/swvgdtt/your-account/manage-downloads.html

If you visit this link after your purchase you will see a yellow button marked "DOWNLOAD" in the upper right of the page. You will also need to pull the VERIFICATION code from the email you get from H&R Block.

CONs:

I do not like the level of information sharing H&R Block seeks to perform. I went through most of their privacy docs to work my way through opting out of as much as I could. As with any Terms of Service baloney, it's loaded with legal coverage and language designed to make you give up. I send several notices to them electronically requesting I be opted out. It's a process.

One item that has made me batty over the years with the program is where and how to input information like carry over stock loses or dollar amounts for 529 contributions. I should have an obvious place to enter this on a line as an explanation to the IRS, but the software keeps you locked into its predesignated fields. On a paper form, I can add in more information and or simply attach a note. I end up always attaching a note.

I've had years where updates have come VERY late in the season. I know that this isn't necessarily the fault of these companies but the late changes politicians can make. I file early in general to both get it out of the way and to try and reduce the chances that someone files as me illegally. With all of the political clout these companies have you'd think they'd force the hand of politicians to get all tax matters settled ASAP.

HERE'S the WORST CON: They explain in their Terms of Service that opting out of some information requires you mail in your opt-out request AND furthermore that doing so may result in functionality issues, specifically some forms of SUPPORT. What?!? C'mon, this is disingenuous as a practice on two levels.

1. I am using an electronic program through and through, but I need to mail in my opt-out of sharing info request in writing? Obviously, this is meant to stop you from doing this.

2. Suggesting I may lose support from H&R Block because I chose to opt out of sharing more than I need to amounts to a threat. Who'd want to lose support for something like taxes, which are confusing enough? Right, no one. But the suggestion is there so you'll go along and not send in your written request to have information not shared. If companies are considered "people" in the eyes of the law, then this "person" is sneaky and suspect as all get out. You'll get what you want from "them" without knowing all that you've given up.

I tried to opt out of as much as I could to this point. I will mail in my request too. I'm stubborn this way and don't care how much time I lose.

Every year tax software gets worse. Clearly whatever devs they have are working on something other than this app because it is hot garbage. To be more precise, it is hotter garbage because it was hot garbage last year and this year it is even hotter garbage.

File management is a total joke. Good luck importing previous year's data. It looks like this is a hybrid design for people who are dependent on cloud computing and can't manage files combined with old school file management. In glorious HR Block fashion, they have succeeded in combining the worst of both the cloud and local files methodologies.

The state "Interview" just pops up a list of forms. What forms do I need? How the heck do I know? That's the reason I bought this tool. If I wanted to go research my forms with no assistance, I wouldn't have spent money on this non-functioning timesuck.

Those are just two items. There are more. Should you fail yourself and decide to use this, you will find many other things which cause you to regret your folly.

Sadly I would say use another tax program, but I tried another tax program with a friend's taxes and it had different but just as terrible problems.

Nothing can be as hard as they make this look.

Abandon hope. QA does not exist. Civilization is in decay. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.

And horrid software like this is a prime example of big companies not being able to put out quality products anymore.

Avoid this like the digital plague it is.

Thank you for attending my TED Talk.

***AND HR BLOCK PLEASE QA THIS GARBAGE! The problems I see should have been caught by any moderately serious effort at QA.***
