If I weren't a CFP with 35 years of experience, I would not have caught the errors in the software that would've cost me TWO GRAND of unnecessary taxes for 2022! These include: on the Federal return, some $1,300 due to an error in QBI deduction calculation; the balance of the overpayment would've been on the NYS return due to missed breaks on healthcare-worker bonus and S-Corp income (from CT-34-SH line 5). I would like to emphasize that I wasn't trying to use the basic version of the software, I paid extra for Premium specifically for its purported ability to tackle more-advanced issues. Also, I have dutifully answered all the questions posed by the program, rather than trying to work directly in the relevant tax forms -- for the simple reason that the latter is simply not workable.
I'll add as a sidebar that the program complained about some common and 100% valid W-2 and K-1 codes; that, of course, is a mere annoyance compared to potentially overpaying your taxes by $2K!!
Far more than just an annoyance is the fact that there's simply NO support. I tried calling on three separate occasions to get help on the above-mentioned issues. Three out of the three reps that I spoke with had no clue what I was talking about (and two sounded like they just woke up from a nap). If that's not bad enough, all three calls disconnected while I was either in mid-sentence or after being put on hold by the rep. To add insult to injury, the third and final call disconnected right after the rep said her supervisor didn't know how to fix the QBI error and instructed her to refund my purchase price for the program. Honestly, I'm flabbergasted that a company like H&R Block wouldn't at least offer assistance from one of their local offices if their toll-free help line is staffed with people who have zero knowledge about taxes.
Given that we're three days away from the filing deadline, H&R Block's buggy software and non-existent support put me in a rather stressful situation. Thanks to my pretty solid understanding of the tax code and the relevant forms, I was able to fix the NYS issues by looking up the pertinent deduction codes in NYS instructions and digging up the appropriate entry fields buried in the program. Alas, the federal QBI deduction isn't so easy to fix because it requires an override; if you do that, the program takes away your eligibility to e-file!!
In conclusion, I went with H&R's program because it was cheaper than TurboTax, which I've used for many years prior. I'll be going back to it next year for its lack of errors, the fuss-free ability to enter data directly into the relevant tax forms, and knowledgeable support.
UPDATE
I basically spent the entire Sunday 4/16/23 on the phone trying to get a resolution to the incorrect QBI deduction. By a stroke of luck, after less than 90 min. on hold I got through to a lady who understood the problem. Just as she started reading off to me something that sounded potentially helpful, the call DISCONNECTED!! At the very start of my conversation with her, I alerted her about this very problem on previous calls and asked if she'd be able to call me back if it were to happen again. She said yes, and I'll let you guess if she did. On a subsequent call, another rep told me that they don't have the ability to call a customer back if the call cuts off...
At any rate, the aforementioned rep finally directed me to Level 2 support. It sounded very promising until the lady that I was transferred to started grasping at the usual tech-support straws, the favorite of which are a problem with MY computer, OS, etc. Before I became a CFP. I majored in computer science in college, so I know a little about this kind of stuff. To be succinct, I'm not so ignorant as to accept that 100+ forms, worksheets and mini-worksheets in their program work fine, but this particular one malfunctioned due to MY fault.
To make a long story short, as much as I was hopeful to get a resolution from H&R Block, it didn't happen. So I went to BJ's, bought TurboTax Home & Business, and filed my tax return without missing any deductions. I'll NEVER buy H&R's program again, even though it's so much cheaper, and for you reading these words, I'll offer this much: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!
