Great for beginner architect enthusiast

This program is very good and easy to use once you learn how, (key phrase). Learning how to use all the features takes time and patience. I would suggest that you bookmark the site for Home Designer Assist so you can easily find it for tutorials on various subjects. It has really good step by step instructions for whatever you are looking to do. I love it and would highly recommend it.

DOWNLOAD DIRECTIONS ARE UNCLEAR/INCORRECT

I follow the directions to download the software, and when I select to download, it just loops me back to the original page to purchase. I've already paid for it, and it might have even charged me twice, so this is really frustrating. And of course, it's impossible to find any way to get support from Amazon.

UPDATE: Went direct to the software company (Chief Architect), and they set me up. This is an issue with Amazon link, not with the product itself.

I bought the program and learned how to use it in a very short time. Having never used CAD, I was impressed with the ease of learning it. I worked with the program for a couple of months tweaking and altering my plans for a shed and for improving my retirement home. This required quite a few painstaking measurements and figuring out how to enter the current home into the cad. My first project was to build a garage/workshop. It all went ok until I tried to print the plans for both building and for submitting for a permit. You simply cannot print full plans from the suite version! (A side note, I upgraded the program twice at 29.00 each time.) Tech support informed me that I must have a pro version to do this. The upgrade is 495.00. If you want a video game to play with your plans, this is the program. If you intend to use it to actually build a structure, buyer beware! This program is a fancy waste of money that works but cannot deliver a product in the end.

Crash and then crashed and then . . .

I just purchased this product and downloaded from Amazon. I am designing a detached garage with apartment and doing a conversion of main home. First time opening informed update available, no big deal. I have created a simple 4 wall first floor and it crashes every time I try to add a second floor.. Sent a message to customer support and we'll see about their customer support.

Update, good news was customer support was very responsive, bad news was that the graphics card wasn't going to ever work. Good excuse to buy a new computer. I continued using the software while I waited for new computer. While I could build I couldn't do graphic views but it didn't stop me from moving forward and using the different tools. Today my new computer came, I immediately added a second floor (on portion of 1st floor), I liked the software even on old computer, I am really liking it now. I have a lot to learn but some of the tutorials I watched are being very helpful.

Pros - It is a great program for automatic values and builds. Mostly more streamlined than free home design programs. Extensive materials list(but also a con with no "recent" selection) 3D effects are great(the glass house and framing cams are my favorite). Overall ability to edit things and items, also the feel of the experience when designing, are better than the free programs.

Cons- Value for cost, i.e., you have to pay for extra name brand home accessories like furniture or fixtures or appliances. It's very touchy, you have to put your mouse eeeexactly on the item you want to move or click otherwise it will select other background items(very annoying). The program will auto shut down without warning if you try to copy and paste an item, so then any progress you made in past 5 min will have to be redone. The floor thickness between floors cannot be changed(they have a 12" floor thickness, which wastes upper floor space). No ability to do lofts, which makes difficult to do smaller or tiny home designs. When editing items there is no "recent" selection so you have to re-find the material you used before(which is a huge waste of time because the materials list is quite extensive and in many sub categories)

Overall I think this program is worth about half the cost they want comparing it to several free design softwares out there. But if you want just a little bit more customization/materials, nicer 3d renderings, and automatic actions, then you'll have to pay the $100.

Give yourself a few weeks to learn all the features. Be patient. It's kind of like learning new job trying to run it. My mom brightness on a pretty basic but new computer $250 computer and you'll need a lot more horsepower if you want to start putting in 3D imported images from the website. Keep things simple actually does just fine.

It is a love hate affair

If you have never done CAD before there is a steep learning curve. You know what you want to do, just not how.

The help system is extensive and like a lot of help systems it does not make sense until you figure out how to do the thing you are trying to do. At least in the beginning it gets you close so you can figure it out and than it makes sense.

Another frustration is a number of thing I want to do are in the higher end editions but not enough that I want to pay for them.

The sequence of doing things is also important and I usually get it backwards. There is a logic to the where things are at in the menu system, I just do not know where it is. I finally learned to look at the bottom of the screen where some the features you are looking for show up.

Watching the videos is important. In addition to the subject matter, the instructor use a lot of little tricks that make life easier. To get the most out of the videos it helps a great deal if you have already spent time crashing through the program. Getting to the pretty pictures they show is possible with the higher end edition but in my mind not worth the time and trouble unless you use this stuff professionally.

Yes I would buy it again.
