With the End of Life of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials we had to upgrade our file server to a more recent version of Windows Server. We first tried an Upgrade (not clean install). We encountered an unsolvable problem trying to get past an Active Directory (AD) step. We had a Consulting Firm unsuccessfully try to setup Active Directory in the past so apparently there was something still unresolved that the Upgrade could not get past. So we opted for a Clean Install. We are running RAID 10 on both C and D (Data) Volumes. While the C drive was completely overwritten, the D drive was left intact .. except .. we had to wait a long time (1.5 hours! .. a lot of folders and Files) while Windows reset the sharing properties of all the shared folders and files on D. Otherwise the Clean Install went well. Since this is just a File Server we only had a few app to install, which went well, including re-sharing the folders and files.
