I recently got Movie Studio 2022, and oh, it was terrible. It's nothing like Vegas. I still tried to learn it's clunky interface and was able to render something. The quality of the render was also bad. I did a side-by-side, and my project from Movie Studio 16 was noticeably better.
Then I got Movie Studio 17 from here. It seems to be the same as my 16 version, but I thought it's the latest and greatest and probably won't be on sale soon. I might as well get it while I still can even though I just got double dipped.
Note: like others mentioned, you may get the incorrect key from Amazon. That is what happened to me. I just forwarded the Amazon order email with the key to Magix support email (see the product Q&A here for it). They sent me the correct key in 1 business day. That's great! Kudos to them.
The problems? Let's start with that photo I added. No jpg support for this image? When did that happen? This is the same jpg file that I've used with Movie Studio 17.0 since I bought the product TWO YEARS AGO. All of a sudden it's an unsupported format for some unexplained reason. I've been using this product for some image editing as well as audio and video editing.
Let's move on to the audio editing. First problem occurred after I would render an mp3 file and it would cut the audio short and go silent for several seconds before the file would end. I would have to render it two or three times in a row to finally get it to render the entire file to proper completion.
Within less than a year of having this software, I would add audio for sound effects in videos and I wouldn't be able to preview the sound effects. It would also render the video without the sound effects.
I would have to close the software and re-open it and immediately render the video right away without previewing anything to get the sound effects working.
It's now at the point where I cannot even edit videos on it at all. It's not a memory or space issue. I've uninstalled this software, cleaned up space on my memory drive and re-installed Movie Studio. I still have the same problem where now I try to add a video file (regardless of how big the video is) into the software made for video editing and it just freezes and crashes.
Movie Studio 10 and even 11 were amazing, but the more Sony Vegas "upgrades" this software the worse it seems to become. Sony Vegas won't be supporting 17 in a year or so anyway, so even if you have a product key you won't be able to download it on your next computer or laptop pretty soon.
Movie Studio 17 Platinum doesn't do anything better or has any more advantages over a simple editing software you can just find at Office Max for $40 anyway. Save yourself the money, the headaches, the trouble and just go with a competitor. I'm not supporting Sony Vegas ever again.
