1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T buy this software

I have a Mac (10.5.8) and this software won't even install. It begins the installation process, but then a message "Install Failed" comes up and there is no remedy. The customer support site offers absolutely no help for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this game.

Really fun, just challenging enough that she needs my help some of the time(she's three and a half and just learned how to use a computer a couple of days ago.) Its fun for both of us, its a lot like the movie. You take your character into a world where you walk and jump around to get crystals and then you move on to do some other challenges to get each big crystal, red, blue, yellow, and green, to save the colors in the crystal kingdom. This was her very first game on the computer and she really enjoyed it. We played it for several hours on Christmas and she never got bored. The older Dora games are more about sitting and listening to the story and playing a quick simple game, which can get boring. This one is less story to listen to and more doing fun activities. And there are three levels of challenge so she cal continue to play as she gets better. Great!

2.0 out of 5 stars poor product installation,
Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2009
The product was installed on Mac OS X. The installation was frustrating. It failed to work on a user account with parental controls enabled. Once installed it failed to work without an internet connection. So the product was entirely unusable on a computer appropriately configured for a child in this age group.

The game includes a number of puzzle sections as well as arcade gameplay. The puzzles were generally interesting although somewhat variable in terms of complexity. The game makes no attempt to adapt to the skill of the player making some games trivial to complete while others overly complex. The arcade gameplay requires the use of the keyboard for navigation which is fine as long as the child is familiar with the arcade/keyboard gameplay. The arcade levels are all the same in terms of gameplay and so tend to become boring quickly.

The game - for no apparent reason - enforces a linear gameplay until the player has completed the level. Thereafter the player can go to any completed level. This restriction is terribly silly since it means every new player has to go through the whole game before being able to go to their favorite level.

In general I would not recommend this product. You can get 10-20 games on the iPhone or IPod touch for the same cost, many of which would be more entertaining and useful for children on their own, and certainly so as a group.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kids love it, could have been laid out better.

I bought this after my 4 year old daughter discovered it while waiting at an Apple Store where I was shopping. I had no trouble loading it onto my Mac running Snow Leopard--just gotta follow the directions for loading.

It took me more than a few minutes to understand how the game was laid out. My 4 year old would never have been able to get it on her own. Basically, a child has take Dora through a series of "adventures," which really serve as learning activities. Once the child completes an adventure, she can go back and repeat it, but she can't skip ahead to other adventures. It would have been nice to allow this. There are certain activities I'd like my daughter to practice a bit more than others. If there are three adventures between the one she's on and the one she'd like to go to, she has to successfully complete the adventure before she can go ahead. I wouldn't mind this so much if some of the adventures didn't seem so pointless.

On the other hand, my daughter seems to really enjoy the activities. Even my son, 6 1/2, seems to enjoy it. I gave 3 stars not because my kids don't like it, but rather because I think it could have been more user friendly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great

The characters are chatty, and it amuses my daughter to move Dora forward on the screen and make her jump. Having fun with the computer was our reason for purchasing it, so that's good, but it's almost painfully repetitive.

The game pretends to teaches shapes, counting, colors, and letter recognition. If these are skills you want your child to learn, this is a cute game. If you want your child to simply have fun, this game is a predictable and bland. My daughter knows these already which is GOOD because it enables her to feel successful when we play and BAD because there's little to stretch her skills here. We have begun playing the more challenging level and are disappointed to discover it's not that much more challenging at all. There are additional shapes (a diamond, for example, not just a circle and square and triangle) and additional numbers (up to 12! not just up to 8), and this is too bad because we thought this game would last us longer than it looks as though it will.

My daughter will not be 3 years old for another 3 months, but don't go by the age range on this game, think about your child's knowledge of the skills and whether your priority is educational or entertainment. This is a very limited game entertainment-wise (so structured!) and potentially pointless from an educational perspective if your child has already mastered the content.
