Been using this ever since TurboTax did the crazy price hike 10 or so years ago. The questions are a little different, so if you’re a long time TurboTax user, it may be a little…confusing is way too strong a word, but it just takes a minute to get used to it. Works just the same though. Glad I switched. If you can, buy it early and get it for $20 or less. It’s a bargain then. Otherwise, it's priced just about right. They keep the price point where it is, and not do the crazy TurboTax prices, and I’ll keep using this product. Highly recommend.

Keeps crashing

I've used H&R Block for several years because it's cheaper than Turbo Tax and seems to do just as good a job. This year has been the exception. The software itself is fine. Everything was easy to do. I gave it 1 star instead of 5 for two reasons. The app keeps crashing. In the middle of adding a form it will just completely crash. Then you have to start over from the last point you remembered to save. At several points, it would crash while attempting to move to the next step, for example, from Federal to State. I simply had to keep trying until it could finish. I think it took around 5 times of it crashing before I successfully advanced. The second issue is that it won't properly format my documents to print. I am efiling, but I like to print them off too. No matter what I try, I can't get it to print them correctly. It is cutting off almost half of the form. I may have to switch back to Turbo Tax next year.

Best value for tax preparation software

I’ve used this tax software for several years now and I find it to be the best value in tax preparation software. It’s just as user friendly as the most popular tax prep software. The user interface is straightforward and easy to navigate.

I don’t use paid tax software for my state taxes. My state has a very straightforward web interface that relies on numbers directly lifted from federal tax so it’s not worth the extra cost of buying package with state software and paying the extra filing fee. I prepare and submit my state taxes online via state website for free.

H&R tax software - Glitchy software, rendering it useless

I have used several brands of tax software over many years, from TurboTax to H&R BlockTax (formerly TaxCut). I had issues with TurboTax and their C-Dilla monitoring programming, and have subsequently used H&R Block for the last six or seven years. Nothing different this year, I initially purchased this year's H&R software product (for Mac) in February. I finally got finished gathering my info for this years tax season this past week. Everything went well until I finished entering my 50-plus stock transactions, saved the data, then went back to review the data.... I couldn't find the data, found some of the transactions, but not all. As you can imagine, this was very disconcerting. The next day, I checked the inputted data again, and yes, there were still gaps in the transactions that I had inputted the day before. I have upgraded the program as they have been made available. Thought that may I got a bad version of the program. I purchased a second copy of the program, downloaded it, updated it. Inputted the rest of the required data. Spent another considerable amount of time to input the 50-plus stock transactions again. Saved the data, shut down the system, and restarted the system. Again, there were numerous stock transactions missing that I had just inputted. After sleeping on this issue, the next day, I decided to junk this (second) faulty H&R Block program. I then seeked and found another competitor's tax software program. I then inputted the stock transactions into yet another program. This time, after the third attempt, the competitor's was robust enough to not "lose" (corrupt) this important data. After looking at Amazon's double-speak replacement/refund, I doubt that I will get any redress for my purchases of this year's faulty glitzy software programs. BTW, I have been a satisfied customer of Amazon for over twenty (20) years. My advice - stay away from this year's faulty H&R Block product.
