5.0 out of 5 stars Windows 7 is still the best since XP

I needed a Win7 key and Microsoft no longer sells Win7 for digital download, you can only get a physical copy. So I thought, as long as I am buying a physical copy, I might as well get it for cheaper on Amazon. I have Windows 8 on my laptop, so I can compare.
Reasons why Windows 7 is still preferable to Windows 8:
1) Win8 is designed for a world where everyone is using touch screens for computing. The truth is, we use touch screens for mobile computing frequently (smart phones, mp3 players, tablets, etc), but not on our laptops or desktops as much. It's likely that one day we will use touch screens for many more things, but that day has not arrived yet.
2) The lack of a start button is not the end of the world, but it is a pain in the ass. I still have yet to figure out how to open an app on top of my desktop (e.g. on the same screen as my desktop) rather than returning to the home screen (which is not the desktop), and opening the app from there. This was recently very obnoxious when I was trying to add a bunch of numbers together using the calculator app. I had to switch between my desktop and the homescreen to get the numbers to plug into the calculator app.
3) I don't like the centralized "app store" that Win8 ships with. While this makes sense for mobile phones, on a computer where accessing the free web is easy, it just feels like a proprietary push.

That said, Windows 8 is totally usable -- it's just designed well ahead of its time, so much so that its functionality isn't a good fit for my needs today.

5.0 out of 5 stars What it isn't.

So many reviews go on about what it is. Here is what it isn't.

Linux....

Linux systems that I have tried are never on the edge of current events. Even the games that are available for them aren't as up to date as the version of the same games that you can get for windows.

Linux isn't as user friendly to install. Though I must say that I nearly freaked when Windows 7 asked me how I wanted to partition my hard-drive. The partitioning and the rest of the install went smoothly though.

Linux systems (that I have tried) aren't as easy to set up and use. Especially if you are already familiar with the older version of windows. Though Windows 7 has changed a lot on how to change settings. If you are used to setting stuff up in older version of windows the learning is pretty straight forward.

I have yet to see anything that makes it better then XP. Though buying a new copy of XP didn't look like much of a option. They don't sell XP. At least where I shop.

If you don't mind a steep learning curve. Software that is years out of date. Half your hardware not working up to its potential (when it does work). The go with Linux. After all there are many free distributions out there. What isn't cheaper then free after all.

If you want something that is easy to learn. That the software for it has the potential to be cutting edge. All your hardware working (usually). The shell out the money for Windows 7. It is a purchase you won't regret.

Many people dog on windows. I like to even. After trying the alternative though , I must say that Windows is the only way to go now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy with Windows 7

After using Windows Vista for a couple of years it was time to finally change to Window 7. Windows 7 works extremely fast, smooth, and crash free compared to Windows Vista. Installation was easy with the Win 7 DVD just installing itself on my new hard drive in about 20 minutes. On the initial start up there were a few configurations including language and internet to click through. Before installation was complete I was already connected to my home wireless internet.
Connecting to wireless is easy with Win 7. Vista sometimes had issues connecting to wireless internets, wireless printers, home networks etc, all of those problems are gone with Win 7.
Vista always had a knack for crashing and I would usually find my computer crashing a few times a month. Windows 7 has not crashed yet and I've been using it for a few months now.
Start up with Vista could take up to 7 minutes at it's worst. Win 7 startup is just over 1 minute. Shut down with Vista usually was at least 2 minutes. Win 7 shuts down in about 12 seconds.
Overall, I am very please with my transition to Win 7 and I highly recommend it, especially if you are using Vista right now.

1.0 out of 5 stars this operating system is about useless with most computer hardware

I bought windows 7 to replace windows xp so that I would have an operating system with a recovery disk but I loaded it just fine but then once it was too late I realized that it couldn't even understand any of my drivers especially my ethernet controller even though my computer was totally compliant to system requirements for the 32 bit disk.I took it to my friend at bits-n-bytes computer repair shop in lansing mi and he said that that operating system would not work because dell doesn't even have the drivers for a dell dimension 8100 desktop to operate with it so I had to pay him to reboot it again with windows 7 ultimate because otherwise i would have no drivers even then it took a long time to find all of the drivers because this system has very few.It still has to reboot half of these drivers every time it starts up which takes a long time and is somewhat manual.I can't even return this software for a refund or legally sell it now that it is opened.I think that microsoft has gotten lazy and assumed to much privledge in charging that much money for a cheap operating system.I think that some of those old mac operating sytems are actually higher budget on the production and devlopment end.If you ordered this I think that I would just write refused on the package to send it back to the seller!
