4.0 out of 5 stars Hardware excellent - software average

This product does exactly what it is supposed to do: link an old VHS camcorder to your PC to covert tapes. The hardware box is small, easy to install and worked immediately (not the case with several other similar devices I tried). The actual software program is functional but really quite basic and limited. I ended up using Cyberlink's PowerDirector which is a really superb Video Editing program but happens to also have a "Capture" function, thus I used it instead of Honest Technology's VHS to DVD 4.0 Deluxe to do the tape-to-computer conversions. Since I was not going directly to DVD perhaps my review is a bit unfair but there it is anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good video capture but the editor is shaky and primitive

I was very gratified with how easily the product transferred video from my 8-mm camera to my computer. I could see the video on my monitor and set-up was very easy.
I would say there are two downsides to the product:

(1) The documentation - e.g. it does not explain the file types that are created in the process, nor does it explain well what it means to save a "project". It would have been very helpful to see an overview of the file types that are created as you go from video tape to file on the computer to file types ready for burning to a DVD. I still haven't figured out how to burn the DVD-type files to a DVD by retrieving the DVD-files created somewhere on my computer.

(2)The editor provided is somewhat limited in scope, and is very labor-intensive when you want to insert DVD "chapters". There is no time counter, so you have to basically replay the whole tape to find the sections where you want to insert chapters. The program file-naming conventions are confusing, especially when you build up multiple files. And make SURE the program "sees" your DVD burner before you try to burn a DVD.

However, having said all this, the product does the job - just be prepared to spend quite a few hours of trial-and-error before you figure out all the nuances (e.g. I got "burned" one time because I did not realize that the program EITHER writes to a DVD OR creates a set of DVD files on your hard disk. NOT BOTH AT THE SAME TIME, as you might have expected.)
It became evident that they had shorted the editor in order to encourage you to spend another $60 to get what is presumably an easier-to-use editor. However, once I figured out how to slice out worthless sections of the video, I got a nice set of clean segments (I was editing old videos of my son's wrestling matches). There are some cute "transitions" you can enter between tape segments - but note that these transitions are NOT the same as inserting "Chapters". There was no explanation of how to best relate Transitions to inserted Chapters.

Tried to work for a number of years with a Roxio product to get my VHS tapes and home movies into my computer so I could edit them and put them on DVDs. Nearly every time I went to start the process, I'd either have to make changes to my computer or clean install the Roxio product to make it work. What a hassle! The VHS to DVD 4.0 Deluxe, while not a fancy or as complete a product as I might wish, has proven to be a delight. No problems at all with transferring the video to my computer. As it doesn't have many of the editing features I might wish, I do use another software product to final edit my films and burn them to DVD. However, I'm now able to get transfer the video to my computer easily and quickly -- something I was never able to do with the Roxio product. Wish I'd have found this product a couple of years ago. Would certainly have avoided a lot of pain and frustration!

2.0 out of 5 stars hard to navigate around for me

It transfers VHS tape ok, but takes a long time. The hardest part is when you go to edit, it seems a little hard to put things together and doesn't seem to me, to be any way to go back and undo anything if you make a mistake. I edited a tape and it was good, except I wanted to change 1 spot, and then everything fell apart and I just aborted the whole project. It could be my video card or memory, but I met all the requirements on the box??

1.0 out of 5 stars VHS conversion to digital

This product was easy to install and set up but I couldn't get it to work satisfactorily. VHS transfer had electronic noise band at the bottom of every video picture and I couldn't get rid of it. I cleaned the VHS heads as instructed by vendor and tried on 2 different VHS recorders but no change. Product was returned without problem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Honestech VHStoDVD 4.0

I do recemmend this as a good product because it installs easily and the directions are fairly straightforward. I haven't had a chance yet to fully explore all functions but I've made a few dvd's. I'm a little confused by all the file extentions that are created when a vhs tape is converted.... BUP file for Quicktime, IFO file for Windows Movie Maker, and the VOB file which is the big one that contains your movie. Supposedly, you may need to change the VOB file to an MPG file (So I was confused about the burning process, but this was more do to my own ignorance). Basically, I played around with it for awhile. One thing that worked--after I uploaded the vhs tape to create a movie file, I then opened this movie file in Windows Movie Maker, (another movie software that was already in my computer) and it burns the movie as an mpg file. But any software you use is time consuming (better to hit the burn button and walk away from your computer for an hour or two) A movie file also occupies a lot of space on your hard drive... maybe 3 gig for a half hour movie. I'm not complaining about the software, it just takes so much time to do these conversions.

I was so disappointed in this software. I could not get it to work on my Vista 64 bit system even though I had contacted tech support
several times and they were so gracious and worked with me but their engineers just could not figure out why it would not
work on my system. The company is terrific and is issuing me a full refund. I would not hesitate to purchase other software
from them. The product is great is it works, easy to use and will produce great results especially if you are a beginner like me
in the video field. I gotta tell ya, they have the best tech support I have ever encountered and their patience and communication
were absolutely the best.
