4.0 out of 5 stars Check that your camera is compatible before ordering!

Perhaps I’m too much of an amateur when it comes to photo editing software, however I really struggled with this. First, there seem to be some pretty major compatibility issues with the software only opening files from some of my devices but not others. Second, it has quite the learning curve when it comes to using the software. It’s not the type of software you can simply figure out as you go along. I ended up having to watch quite a few tutorials and am still not entirely sure I’m getting the most from this software. It does, however, produce visually stunning edits if you have the patience and a compatible camera model!

1.0 out of 5 stars It wouldn't open any RAW files I had.

I am disappointed with this as it doesn't serve my purpose. The software only allows me to open the RAW practice files and fails to open any other RAW files from different cameras. Also, I find Adobe Photoshop's RAW module to be more efficient and effective. I wish I could return the software as it is of no use to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very user friendly for novice
Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2023
There's not really much to this program. You import a picture and it reduces the noise and grain in a photo. However, its not as simple as it sounds. I tried to import a photo taken from my phone and the JPG file is apparently not compatible with the program. The program does come with sample files of file types I'm not familiar with (which does not mean they're not common, just not anything I'm familiar with) but when I tested the program out I had to choose the model camera and lens that the photo was taken with in order for it to work. Fortunately, it automatically recognized that information and I was able to just confirm it so I could test the program with the provided image. It worked fine when I went through all that for the sample image, but I don't think I'll be using this program often with all the hoops I have to jump through to get results. I do have a nice DSLR camera that I might try to import pictures from. Maybe it will work with those files. I think this might be a good program for someone with a better understanding of how it functions, but id recommend for the average user to look for something more user friendly.

Works really well when working with RAW photos, does take a little bit of learning but overall a nice and easy to follow program that will get you some extra edits in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taken a while to get used to

It’s pretty evident quickly that this software has some pretty effective editing capabilities but it does have a bit of a learning curve, which has taken me a while to get up to speed and as comfortable as I would like to be. With that being said, I’m happy with the results and continue to work to improve. The install wasn’t difficult at all, the software is impressive and while not quite as intuitive as some others, it’s working great.

Can improve your images with the extra work if you put it in. Handles Cannon raw files great and is easy to work with. It does clean up file nicely but you still have to use other software sometime to finish the image. I do put the extra work in for cleaning up images that need to be sharpened does a very good job with that. I does a good job not great for denoising but some photo's are worth the effort.

Anyone with a digital camera knows the problems faced. No camera is perfect, and no lens is perfect and as a result pictures suffer from noise. DxO's PureRaw3 is the latest version of its software that can help produce noise-free photographs.

It can enhance detail and sharpen photographs as well as provide optical corrections based on the camera and lens that were used. Optical corrections include getting rid of chromatic aberration, distortion, and known lens flaws.

Of course, it cannot deal with every camera and lens ever made but it can deal with most modern mainstream models including cell phones, drones, and action cameras.

Cameras include Apple, Canon, DJI, DxO, Fujifilm, GoPro, Hasselblad, Kodak, Konica, Leica, Nikon, Nokia, Olympus, OM System, Panasonic, Parrot, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung, Sigma, and Sony.

Lenses include Apple, Canon, DJI, DxO, Fuji, Fujifilm, GoPro, Hasselblad, Irix, Kodak, Konica Minolta, Laowa, Leica, Nikkor, Nokia, Olympus M.Zuiko + Zuiko, OM System, Panasonic, Parrot, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung, Samyang, Sigma, Sony, Tamron, Tokina, Voigtlander, Yongnuo, and Zeiss.

DxO updates its list frequently so even if your camera and/or lens is not shown it is worth checking DxO's website to see if camera and lens options have been updated.

Once you have scratched off your software code and entered it online you will get an activation code for the software itself. This is recommended to be done prior to installation. The software comes on a thumb drive and installation is very straightforward. Once installed use the activation code and you are good to go.

In use, DxO PureRaw3 is very straightforward to use. Simply import your RAW picture and select it for processing. When you first import a photograph it will identify the camera and lens modules needed.

When processing, there are different options depending on your needs, but the default "DeepPRIME" AI option will work for most people. Explanations of other options are explained in the software. You can choose to have the processed file output as a DNG, JPG, or TIFF (8-bit, 8-bit compressed, or 16-bit).

Processing my Olympus ORF RAW files took between 15 and 30 seconds. Once processed the file is saved automatically and you will see something like "P8290025-ORF_DxO_DeepPRIME" in your folder.

You then have the choice of viewing in Explorer, seeing side by side results, or exporting to Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Lightroom Classic, or (in my case) Adobe Photoshop (Beta). An export can always be done later if you want to finish processing first.

Does it do what it claims? In my view yes, it does. The software is AI powered and it does a really good job of removing noise, sharpening, and enhancing detail. And it does a better job than other mainstream apps in my opinion.

Are there any downsides? No, not really. It does exactly what it claims to do although I do recommend using a full-size monitor as the text is a little hard to read (at least for me) when I initially put it on my 15.6" laptop. I swapped the software over to my desktop with a 4K monitor and that's the best option I think. It ran on the laptop without issue, but it was much easier to see what was going on and the results on a larger monitor.

Incidentally, DxO’s support is very good. I had an issue with my scratch code and I emailed them at 11.40 am and at 2.37 pm I received an answer that solved the problem.

This is professional grade software, and it will help you to do justice to your photographs. If you have a digital camera and you want to get the best out of it and your photographs, I highly recommend you get DxO PureRaw 3. It's a "must have."
