5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, reliable and incredibly user friendly cloning and backup software plus loads of other features

I'm reviewing Acronis True Image 2021 and it is hands down the best cloning and backup software I've ever used in my life - which is along time LOL. I bought it to clone my windows system SSD drive and of course for backups. It is actually a bit of an overkill since it also offers a ton of other features including antimalware and robust cyber protection.

The product I bought from Amazon was a box that included a license key and instruction manual. The download was fast and easy as well as the install. I have Win 10 on an Asus ROG Maximus Hero XI motherboard for reference. Everything about this software was designed with the user in mind and novice one's at that. After install it brought up a tutorial and multiple reference links on how to use the product for EACH product service. I found that refreshing and somewhat unusual these days. I did take a harder look at the cloning link since I wanted to make sure I got this right and it did offer a couple helpful tips I needed when initializing and formatting my new SSD later.

But really, the software is so well designed you probably will be like me and take a quick peak at the tutorial and more on to using the product. Because everything is menu driven. Click on "backup" and it literally walks you thru choosing the backup scheme that fits your needs and then saves that profile. You can have multiple profiles if you choose. For example, multiple choices with explanations for incrementals, differentials and also a choice of how many of each you desire before it will do a new full backup. You can schedule backups automatically or do manuals like I will do - it is totally up to you and very flexible. And the backup is incredibly fast. I did a full of my 2.1GB data files in less than two minutes. This was from an internal SSD to a USB SATA drive in a WavLink docking station/enclosure. And I've completed one incremental and it was easy and fast.

But most importantly for me was the cloning feature. Cloning can be very tricky and sometimes with glitches especially when you are cloning to an external drive in an enclosure as I was. But after getting my SSD USB Asus enclosure up and running and the Samsung PCIe NVME SSD installed, initialized and formatted, the cloning process thru Acronis was click on tools, click on cloning and the rest was menu choices based on what I would be using the clone for - in my case on a new drive inside current desktop. There are other choices and how Acronis handles and creates the clone is based on those choices and is not of concern to the user. I cloned my Windows system disk (115GB from my Samsung 512GB 970 EVO Pro SSD PCIe 3.0 NVME M2 SSD) onto a Samsung 980 Pro SSD house in my external USB Asus enclosure in less than 8 minutes. I was blown away especially since this is a clone and a bit by bit read/write. Upon completion Acronis indicates it was successful and indicates you can now install the drive and use as a new system disk.

Enough said I guess. This is a very well designed, user friendly and technically sound piece of software that I highly recommend.

Well, it's not that I don't know anything about computers. I have been building my own desktops since 1980's MS-DOS era. Well I bought a Lenovo Legion T5, 3 GHZ. I7 Intel processor with 16 gig of ram and 1 TB hard drive. Well it also comes with a Solid State Drive as the C; boot drive with 256 GB. Well as you know Windows 10 uses a lot of disk space. So I installed another 1TB drive in the computer from my old computer that had all my saves files and data. I used the D: drive of the new computer to install my programs on it that I could change the destination of the the D:Programfiles so I would not use up the C:drive if I didn't have to. Well it has been over a year now and I was starting to have problems and the C: was showing red. I did some research, then researched again and double checked and tripple checked as to how to solve this problem. I ended up getting a WD - WD_BLACK SN750 NVMe 1TB Internal PCI Express 3.0 x4 Solid State Drive for $130.00 it was on sale for half price. I got an M.2 drive enclosure and Acronis True Image 2021 from amazon for less than $50.00. I install Acronis, put the 1TB SSD in the Enclosure, plugged it into the USB port, Brought up the program and selected Clone drive and chose the C: and chose the other SSD and it cloned the C; Drive, Took the !TB out of the enclosure and removed the 256 GB C: SSD and plugged in the 1TB ssd and turned on the computer and I am not up and running a C: 1TB drive that I can now install my programs on and not have to worry any more. If you have a small C: boot drive and need to enlarge it whether it is an SSD or regular Hard Disk Use the Acronis True Image. Every thing was exactly like the original C: drive except it was 1TB in size. Lots of space now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Major letdown (Updated -- Much Happier Now)

UPDATE: I originally gave it 2 stars for the reasons stated in my original post below. However, after running a backup with another backup program (AOMIE Pro), it was just as slow. In fact, I noticed it was only transferring data at less than 29MB/s -- which is ridiculously slow for a USB-3 external hard drive.

That is when I realized that I had made a huge mistake. I ran some diagnostic software and the port was clearly running very slow (definitely not anywhere near USB-2 standards, much less USB-3 standards). I restarted my PC, plugged the USB cable into another USB-3 port, and it ran much, much faster. So it turns out the root of my issues were with hardware (a bad USB port), not with True Image 2021. I then ran True Image 2021 and it actually backed up the drive faster than True Image 2019 had.

So I am much happier with my purchase now. I still have to run a few backups, and try cloning again. But, as of now, I have no regrets for upgrading.

***********************************************************************************************************************************

I have used True Image for years. I have had multiple different versions, and each version has been an improvement over the last. I have always believed it was the best backup software by far, and it saved me on several occasions. If you can get a copy of True Image 2019 jump on it, as that was an incredible version.

Sadly, True Image (TI) 2021 has been a major disappointment. It is massively slower than 2019 was. I could do a full backup of a 2 TB hard drive with about 980 GB of data, with verification, in about 6 hours with TI 2019. I did a full backup of that same drive with TI 2021 and it took over 14 hours.

I am trying to clone that same 2TB drive now. With TI 2019, that cloning took about 5 minutes to get set up, and the whole cloning process took about 3 hours. I just started the cloning process with TI 2021, it took 45 minutes to set up, and now it shows almost 12 left to complete the cloning (after running for almost an hour already).

I'm going to have to see if I can find another copy of TI 2019 somewhere (since I already transferred the old license to my laptop and installed the TI 2019 there). While I'm sure the backup and clone will work in TI 2021, the slowness of both processes makes them unacceptable and unusable for me. It's sad to see such a quality product suffer such a letdown with their newest version. Hopefully they will fix the problems with future versions, but I'm going to stick with TI 2019 if I can find another copy.
