Poor for reading skills

The listening comprehension is quite effective and each level is always a few steps ahead of my comfort zone, which definitely mimics the real world. I gave this program only 2 stars for the reason that the written portion of the program is completely useless unless you know how to read Hindi. The program does not teach you how to sound out the characters so I skipped that whole portion.

RosettaStone always touts itself as being the BEST way to learn a foreign language. I purchased this to learn Hindi because I frequently travel to India. While it is good teaching how to say words (you must repeat them like a parrot), and the grammar is okay, it does not teach you at all how to write in the Devanagari script. For me, it is much easier to learn a language when I know how to read what I'm looking at. If you do not know the Hindi alphabet, you will not know how to discern the differences between the words raha and rahe.
The speakers are good, but there is one particular speaker with whom I had trouble understanding. The Hindi language is spoken much faster than English, so listening was difficult. Also, there is no way to pause while in the middle of a lesson. With software that costs this much, there should be a clickable icon to take you to the next lesson (or to at least pause) without proceeding automatically. If you miss something on a screen and want to review it after the lesson, you have to stop what you are doing (because it takes you to the next section of the lesson automatically), go back to the navigation portion of the lesson, choose where you missed the question, and start all over again with that lesson. This is EXTREMELY cumbersome when you want to review some things if you have not logged on for a week or so.
Overall, I am still on the fence about this software: on one hand, I am hoping that it will help me learn Hindi (not a whole lot of software resources are out there), but on the other, it was quite expensive seeing as how it is not easy to navigate through the lessons.
