About this item

Works out of the box, with full multimedia support and is extremely easy to use.
Community-driven. Users are encouraged to send feedback to the project so that their ideas can be used to improve Linux Mint.
Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and one of the best software managers.
It's safe and reliable. Thanks to a conservative approach to software updates, a unique Update Manager and the robustness of its Linux architecture, Linux Mint requires very little maintenance (no regressions, no antivirus, no anti-spyware...etc).

3.0 out of 5 stars Great but not quite mainstream quality

Linux Mint is a breeze to install and everything works out of the box. It does everything it says it does. The problem is that it's still Linux. In that, I mean that there is too much geekiness for it to be any kind of mainstream operating system. For instance, there are a number of nice themes you can choose from. If you want to add more, you have to download the packet, extract it, find the file path for cinnamon effects(differs by computer), then go into the terminal, type in a few commands you're obviously supposed to know, then move the file into the folder. This is assuming that the hokey directions are correct.

The operating system is nice with good multitasking. The problem is that it's Linux...meaning that it looks like just another cheap generic version of Windows. Do all operating systems HAVE to have a start menu on the bottom left cornor of the screen? Do all open windows HAVE to have the minimize, maximize, and expand buttons on the top right corner? I'm glad Mint is popular, but this OS is about as exciting as Grandma's stewed prunes. Sure they have great nutritional value, but I don't want them in place of my hamburger.

Although I could not launch on my old Compaq, I did install on a build. Love the program. If you are like me and like to experiment with stuff, this is for you. Many many apps for you to work with. I have not found an issue that was not addressed with an app or instructions yet. Very informative and plain old fun to deal with.

My only problem with this CD is 1) I can not mount the cd drive in this operating system so I can not run anything off a CD. 2) I installed this operating system to my internal hard drive in my computer and for some reason it still won't boot unless I boot it from this CD.

1.4 is excellent. 1.5 is better. 1.6 is different slightly, but I think it is faster. Go for the 1.6. I think it is superior to such ast MS 7 and the MS 8s.
