3.0 out of 5 stars Half of what I expected

I liked the ease and structure of the lessons. The only discrepancy I has was certain lessons instructed you to go to manual for lesson to type BUT there was no manual available included with lessons.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Mavis Beacon for a Mac

At the time I write this app is unavailable on Amazon. It's sold at the Apple Store however. I got my copy from an Amazon partner.

There are a zillion versions of Mavis Beacon - it's such a mess I wrote a blog post about the history of it all (Google: Mavis, Broderbund, MacKiev, bubble). This is the one you want.

Do not buy the much cheaper "OS X" version sold by Encore. Same name, different product. Mavis (not a real person of course) has a long and sordid history. MacKiev makes the only Mavis Beacon that actually works. It's not cheap, but it's worth the money.

Quickly, here are some of the key things you'll want to know. I tested on a G5 running 10.5 and an iMac running 10.6

1. The proprietary (yech) install puts 600MB on your drive. Once that was a lot, but no longer. It runs without the CD after that. There's no obnoxious copy protection/DRM.
2. It's designed for multiple users per install. Each person gets their own account and it saves their lesson state.
3. The games and lessons are very well done by people who seem to like developing for OS X. This team is proud of their work. This is not a low bid contract project.
4. It came with the most costly looking and lovely user manual I've seen in years. That's weird.
5. It runs fine in standard user accounts. No need to run as admin.
6. Despite the (yech) non-Apple installer, I think everything is in the one package. I think the uninstall is just deleting the package. They should have documented this though. Weird omission, I bet they forgot.

More people should buy this product!

Box was not sealed, but the DVD appeared new, without scratches.
Good price, and fast delivery. The DVD works in MAC OS X Lion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!

I ordered this software for my 13, 11, and 8 year-olds to improve their typing skills. It has turned out to be so much fun that I've created a profile of my own, as has my six year-old! The lessons are short and give lots of feedback on progress. After a few minutes of work you have the option of playing a game, which the kids love, of course. There are the automatic lessons, games, and a section where you can choose to type from different kinds of literature. You also have the option of having background music on from iTunes, if you wish. At any time you can view your 'progress report', which shows your speed, accuracy, improvement, etc. I am very happy with this software.

This is a great typing program for the Mac. For 4 year old and 6 year old, it's as good as a regular video game. We highly recommend it! By the way, we're running it on Snow Leopard. With a free update download from MacKiev, it's running flawlessly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great software with fun games

Finally, a typing software that works for MAC mountain Lion! I love this software, it starts at the very beginning home keys, you can go back as many times as you feel you need to get it right. And the games are fun. Some are a bit immature, but who doesn't like a fun game to take a break every once in a while? I really recommend this software. I wasn't expecting the 10-key games so that was a bonus.

Great lessons and great fun for all ages. Fun games to compete with others learning to type as well. Worked great on the OSX10.8.x Macs.
