5.0 out of 5 stars Great program even after all these years

i've used a lot of 3d home architect programs out there and for me this one is the best because it was the most straight forward.. easiest to figure out as well.. sure there are things about it that would be nice if updated, but those drawbacks don't outweigh the pros. I use it to prototype rooms quickly and found this to be very useful even to this day.

bear in mind this only works with windows xp or older.. maybe 32 bit versions of vista or windows 7.. but i know for a fact windows 7 64bit will not run it.

1.0 out of 5 stars I. HATE. THIS. SOFTWARE.
Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2005
I spent most of this evening trying to do a simple bathroom layout that I could have drawn on graph paper in an hour. I'm very frustrated and about ready to throw this software onto Marketplace or Ebay and let some other poor schmuck mess around with it. I use Win2kPro and haven't had any crashes in more than a year (last time it was thanks to some cheesy shareware)... but I had three in as many hours this evening running this software.

This software cannot seem to understand placing a medicine cabinet above a sink, a wall cabinet over a toilet, or a tv on top of a dresser - constant error messages saying (essentially) "you can't put something on top of something else" - even when the combination is completely normal and expected. The interface is not at all intuitive, especially the dialog boxes (which were sloppily done from a simple design point of view, for instance the buttons didn't line up neatly) and compounding the problem the help files are garbage: they do not explain what things appearing on the screen mean and only explain the barest rudiments of how to use the features. The 3D views are incomprehensible, even if you situate the "camera" between what you want to look at and the things "behind you", often it layers on the stuff "behind you" so your elevation becomes a useless muddle. I spent almost 45 minutes just trying to get a stupid mirror to show up properly on the elevation (it was correctly placed on the plan view) because it kept appearing fragmented across a couple of other elements in the view. I'm not a stupid person, I'm reasonably well educated and have a good bit of common sense, but this software did a great job of making me feel like a fumbling idiot. I'm glad I only wasted ten bucks on this.

Be prepared for an insane amount of spam from Broderbund, as well; I've removed myself from their mailing list as per the instructions at the bottom of the emails multiple times, but still more fills up my junk-mail folder. Unacceptable. I don't intend to purchase another Broderbund product again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Useless due to Printing Problem; A LOT OF SPAM FROM BRODER.
Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2004
I bought this in order to work on plans for finishing a basement. The program was easy to use, and completing an initial plan was quite intuitive. However, when I went to print, nothing happened -- just an error message. After spending some time with the manual (which was well organized so at least it wasn't too much time) and then with on-line help, which was somewhat spartan, I discovered that there is a glitch that prevented it from printing with the software configuration on my system (which is relatively up-to-date). After that diagnosis, I worked through two potential solutions provided on-line without success, and it came down to reconfiguring and updating my entire system or jetisoning Home Architect.
Since the program wasn't that expensive, this was a minor annoyance, and it is more the time lost with the program than anything else. However, since registering the program and using the on-line help, I have been inundated by spam, often two or three emails a week promoting Broderbund products.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price

This software is now fairly old so I would go for a newer title. I needed it to resurrect some old files that I couldn't open. Unfortunately, it did not work so I'm stuck with old formats I can't use. For the price though, I'd recommend it. If you are on a limited budget and need a design package that works pretty well, this is the cat's meow.

4.0 out of 5 stars User friendly

I had this program on an older desktop and lost it. I was very pleased to find it again, as it is easy to use. While it doesn't have all the new features offered by some of the other programs, you can design a room within the first few minutes of starting this program. I have tried two newer programs, that offered downloading of photos of your rooms, home, etc. But these were so complicated that I could not even get started. I returned both of them and was told by the clerk at the store that I was not alone, many people did the same.

I have used 3D Home Architect to remodel 3 bathrooms and to design a new build of a guest house with garage. We are about to remodel a master bedroom and bath next month and I will be using it again for that project. If you don't need all of the bells ad whistles of the newest programs, I highly recommend this older program. I did have to have my "techie" neighbor help with the install as it didn't want to work with Windows 7, but he made the connection work quickly and it has worked well ever since.

5.0 out of 5 stars have not found one program on the market that can do better in terms of easy of usage

I have been using this program for 17 years, have not found one program on the market that can do better in terms of easy of usage.
I bought this to have a extra copy. It is to bad the programmers started to change what they had in version 3 and 3.5 with
subtle changes in version 4.
Then it got worst in version 5 &6 & 9 when they went to CAD format.
The program has it limitations being so old 1999, but it is so easy to design a house floor plan and have 3d views including a walk though.
Automatic roof design, doll house view, you can even do cross sections by making a wall invisible and using the drag camera to view building cross section.
Overall for what it does I would score it 10 out of 10.,

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't work on Windows 7

Kinda disappointed, this software is the most user friendly out there, I get home pop it in on my laptop and it doesn't work, I done some further investigation and it tells me I need to be running on 32 bit or 64 bit, but I am running on 64 bit. Needless to say don't waste your money on this.
