3.0 out of 5 stars OK with some irritating flaws
Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2006
I've been using Mavis Beacon since 1993 and although this version is ok it still has the same irritating flaws that all the other iterations had.

First the good news. It doesn't freeze as much anymore.

The bad news. (1) It uses the United Kingdom spelling for a lot of words as opposed to U.S. English. (2) It still uses single space after the period. There is an option for using two spaces after the period but that option does not work in the lessons. (3) It is very inflexible. If you make a mistake where you only type four letters of a five letter word, all the subsequent typing can be correct but it will all be marked wrong because of that missed space. (4) There is an option to backspace and correct an error, but it will all be counted as an error anyway, even though your time suffered already from backspacing and correcting. (5) During the transcription lessons, the voice will stop at the end of a phrase but will not go on, unless you look at the hands and type the next few letters that the hands will show you are supposed to type. Hitting the repeat button will only repeat the last phrase that you've already typed.

I bought this for my teenage niece at her request since she used it in school. She loves it and I think it's a wonderful tutorial.

I purchased Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 17 Standard with some apprehension. I owned Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 12 on a previous computer, and the screen froze so many times I gave up trying to use it. So why purchase another Broderbund product?

After researching other typing software, I found that every product had it's share of complaints. I knew Mavis Beacon was very user friendly when it worked, so I gave Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 17 the benefit of the doubt and bought it. So far I'm very happy with it, and it's even better than what I was hoping it would be.

2.0 out of 5 stars Installs more than Mavis Beacon!
Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2010
Beware.

I bought this software to replace a 10 year old version. This CD release installs all kinds of ad-ware on your computer including Net-zero Browser, Browser toolbars, and Ad Pop-ups. If you register the program (the only way to get it to work) you will suddenly start getting hundreds of advertisement emails. Hmmm.

The install does not work correctly and you will have to search for the Mavis Beacon program and create a shortcut to it on your desktop. Otherwise the program will not run.

The whole install will piss you off. Garbage strewn all over your drive and in the system registry. Be sure to search for all files created on your system at the time and date of the install. That way you can search and delete the mess.

The worst part is your email address being sold to anyone hawking their wares. CAUTION. Use or create a throw-away email address.

Otherwise the typing part works as expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well, it does teach you how to type...

But there are many flaws. First off, it installs many third party programs on your computer in secret so you should do a custom install if it gives you the option, and DONT fill out the form that they have you fill out to register the product with your real information. They don't have customer service anyway, so this is just a ploy to sell your information. I tried getting a hold of customer service because I cannot get the program to run full screen on my xp system for some reason and you're given the run around by their website and end up with no one to contact. No email address- No phone #...Nothing. It gives you the option to type two spaces after the period instead of one, but the option doesn't work all the time. It looks like a program from the mid 90's that they're trying to pass off as recent. I will not deny that this program brought my typing speed from 30 to 50 words per minute with daily practice which is why I gave it 3 stars, but I don't see why another program with no flaws couldn't do the same. I haven't been able to compare products and maybe this really is the best program for learning how to type, but all I can say is- If there's any way around ordering a Borderbound product, you should do so at all costs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well when used in addition to "regular" typing lessons
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2007
Advantages: 1) gives extra "practice" that isn't as boring as typing exercises from a book 2) speed tests give feedback on actual progress being made. 3) personal accounts keep everyone progressing at their own level (However, when used with children, they still must be carefully monitored to be sure they are using correct hand position or they will just reinforce poor typing skills.)

I teach a middle school computer class and realized that even though most of the kids have been using a computer since preschool, they are horrible when it comes to having to type anything more than a few words in length. As a part of our class, I teach them proper keyboarding strokes and hand position and make them practice 10 minutes per day. We use Mavis Beacon in addition to a traditional typing book, and it gives them some extra practice that is not as boring as constantly typing exercises from the book. They like playing the games, but I do have to keep my eye on them to be sure they use proper keyboarding hand position. The Mavis Beacon program really is valuable for the "extra" practice.

I purchased the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 17 for my own kids to use at home and learn to type correctly. I do have to monitor them to be sure they are using correct hand position, though, because it is not a stand-alone program for kids. Adults who wish to learn to type would have much success because they are more likely to monitor themselves, but kids tend to get wrapped up in beating the games and forget to use proper hand position.

**So, overall, I think it is a great product as long as it is used properly.**

Excellent software for a beginner. I was concerned about prior reviews regarding compatibility with windows XP sp2 but installation went without a hitch. Am on my way to typing like a professional without pecking on the keyboard as I used to.
