I picked up this DVD set in hopes to refresh my knowledge of PPL material while deployed in Afghanistan (F-15E WSO). I really didn't want to spend hours poring over the ASA books either. I wanted something to watch and listen to, in hopes of making the process a little easier. In all fairness the set did a pretty good job of that. However, without an aviation background, this DVD would be hard to follow. The instructors breeze through the material fairly rapidly, often times with limited discussions or explanations of difficult to understand material. If you are looking to get back into general aviation and would like a decent spin up program, I would recommend this DVD set. Otherwise, I think the $100-150 would be better spent on a real instructor.
(PERSONAL RANT SECTION!)
I had a hard time liking / listening to some of the instructors (and more often the guy who introduces each new topic). The program also tends to display videos that are irrelevant to topic at hand. I found them more distracting than helpful (i.e. why am I watching some guy refuel a plane while you talk about CTAF). The production quality was lower than expected for the price. At one point, you even get to watch the producer have a back and forth conversation with one of the instructors on set during a lesson (clearly left in the video by mistake).
