I am the go to guy for my family when it comes to taxes. I generally prepare around 8 returns a year for family members. They fill a wide range of needs when it comes to taxes, so I get the home and business version to cover the entire range. As for the product itself - I have used this version for at lest 7 years running. That should tell you something right there. I simply trust TTax better than I trust myself. Although I am pretty knowledgable about taxes, they are complex and I need TTax to help me remember things that I would probably forget if I did them by hand. Plus the ability to bring information forward from previous years also helps me remember things about the relatives I do returns for that they themselves have forgotten. It has saved me many times.

My only complaint is that starting last year TTax started putting in a max of 5 returns per license. They didn't announce it and it messed me up a lot last year, because I did some "dummy" returns to check out different scenarios (married filing separately, etc.). Went aganst my number of returns. Now I know to do some of the simpler ones on the onling free version. I do wish that TTax would raise the limit to like 10 or so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tax Preparation Made Easy, I found it on Amazon

TurboTax has prepared a tax software that helps make the process a lot less painful than going it on your own or trying to work with a third party to prepare and submit. The software lets you chose how much help you want (need in most cases) by taking you step by step through income and deductions leaving no stone (deduction) unturned. However you can chose to complete the process without following the easy steps. The great thing is that help is always just a click away. The software also lets you import data from packages like Quicken making the preparation proces less time consuming. I have used TurboTax for over ten years upgrading the product to a more complex package when my business needs changed. I have two different businesses (a health studio and apartment rentals)and I work full time and my wife works as well. The software easily incorporates our business and personal information into the 1040 preparation and since we use Quicken for our accounting practice, everything flows together nicely. I would encourage anyone to try the TurboTax product and see how easy Intuit has made the painful process of paying taxes.

1.0 out of 5 stars CAUTION! FLAWED SOFTWARE!

This weekend, I attempted to file my mother's income tax with this software. She had used the TurboTax version for the Taxable Year 2009 as well. However, both versions have one major software flaw, and it's a big one:

Even though I entered values for capital losses in the software, it did not show in the final version, nor were these capital losses refelected in the tax computations. Effectively, even though capital losses may be carried over indefinitely, my mother would have lost them meaning that (1) she would not have had the benefit of offsetting any capital gains (she sold her home of 35 years and, yes, she did have a large paper gain, even with the $250,000 exclusion for the sale of a home) and (2) even if she did not have a capital gain, $3,000 of capital losses may be utilized per year to offset ordinary income.

These capital losses were not reflected in her 2009 tax return, also filed via TurboTax, so she lost that $3,000 deduction. I will have to file an amended return for that year.

Fortunately, I was able to download H & R Block's software so that her return (with the extension) was timely filed today.

My biggest concern is this: I have an advanced degree in tax and was able to crunch the numbers in my head. I only use this type of software because it is more convenient than filling out a paper form. And, beside, the IRS prefers electronic filings. But what about those of you who are dependent on this software? Had I used this software, my mother would have owed $15,000 in tax. However, she really owes nothing.

Makes me wonder what other little bugs are in this software. STAY AWAY!

5.0 out of 5 stars Low price for high quality product

Amazon always has the lowest prices on the products they sell. I was watching the prices on Turbo Tax home and business software because that is what I have been using for the past 6-7 years to do my taxes. I was waiting for Office Depot and Staples to bring their price down on this product but when I saw the price that Amazon was selling Turbo Tax for I had to get it. I just knew that the other stores could not match the Amazon price for such a great product. Turbo Tax is a great product that is easy to use and you can ask for help on anything you have trouble with - easy and on-line.

2.0 out of 5 stars Crashes without saving data, has way too many bugs, E-file didn't work
Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2011
In past years Turbo Tax was tedious, because the wizard process requires repetition of like 10 questions to revise a single entry, but otherwise smooth.
This year, however, there are lots of annoying glitches. My version on Windows 7 crashed about 10 times as I was doing my returns, so if you use this I would suggest saving frequently.
Also, there seem to be too many bugs this far into in the tax season. For example, a figure entered in the wizard incorrectly appears as 0 (zero) in the income summary page, but is reflected correctly on the (printed) forms.

After dealing with all the crashes and bugs, I wasn't able to e-file due to the following error.
"There is an update available for your version of Turbo Tax. Before you can file electronically, you'll need to get this update. To do this, go to the Online menu and select Check for Updates."
However, when I check for updates the "Updater" says, "Your software is up to date."

There are lots of questions about this on the TT "Live Community," so I don't think it was specific to my situation. I suspect they will resolve it before April, but it seems like they should test their products more thoroughly before shipping them out.
