4.0 out of 5 stars Pinnacle Studio vs VideoStudio Pro X3

Been using Studio for several years. Was ready to upgrade to Studio 14 for the HD capability, but thought it best to check out a few other programs. First tried AVS, and it was ok. Tried Sony Vegas..then I downloaded a 30 day trial version of VideoStudio Pro X3. Worked with it about 3 days and I was ready to make a commitment and put out the cash.

Learning curve not bad at all. Main thing was adjusting preference settings for transitions and photo duration BEFORE beginning a new project (if you want something other than the defaults.) It's difficult to adjust transition times from the timeline, but it becomes almost a non-issue if you just adjust durations from the preference settings.

Studio cannot compare to this software. The workflow is better and so is the "look and feel" during the workflow process. But what really won me over was the end result. It was much more professional than Studio. Product is better engineered and offers much more without having to spend additional money for FX add-on packs, etc. Animated title options are sweet and the program also offers filters which can be applied in the FX segment which includes correcting levels and exposure, adjusting lighting, detail enhancement, applying video pan and zoom and much more.

Running Windows 7 on Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q860 with the new Intel i5 processor. Program never crashed or hung up. Very pleased with both the system and the software.

Advise downloading the 30 day trial from the Corel website before purchasing (great way to avoid buyer's regret syndrome). Purchased from Amazon at $69.99 (Corel's website listed program at $79.99). If you purchase you don't have to reinstall, just need to enter the activation code.

Beats Studio hands down. If you know your way around Studio or even if you are new to video - this software is easy to navigate... Gave 4 stars instead of 5 for the difficulty encountered in adjusting transition duration times directly from the timeline.

Update: To add to my review, it's likely most people having hardware issues don't have enough "computer" to handle the software.

Lots of people may not have a newer system and that's certainly understandable in this economy - but DON'T fault the SOFTWARE if the problem really lies with not having enough horsepower under the hood to run it. Check the minimum system requirements first...

5.0 out of 5 stars Corel Videostudiopro X3 works great

I had used the former version of this software (X2) for a couple years and was generally pleased with it. However, the one area that really was lacking is the unbelievably slow rending times in creating dvd and blu-ray disks. With the prior version, I had to basically wait overnight for rendering and burning. With X3, Corel has really fixed this issue. Render times are extremly speedy. I am able to create a fully-menued blu-ray disk from my AVCHD files (taken with a Canon Vixia HF11) in less than an hour. The video editor menu is pretty much the same as the prior version, but it does seem to handle my high-def files a bit better. It doesn't seem to get bogged down as much working with large files. It is very easy to split scenes, insert scenes and photos, add titles, music, etc. Much of my video is from my sons sports, so splitting scenes and playing certain segments in slow-motion is really cool, especially with a cool musical score.

I will admit that the DVD creator program is a bit funky in how it forces you to catalog everything on your computer, but once you figure out how to use it, it works pretty well.

For the money, this is a really nice, easy to use package. The play back on my blu-ray is fanatastic.

1.0 out of 5 stars TOTAL waste of time!

The editing portion of Corel X3 works fine, and is quite easy to use, though I couldn't believe I had to look for an hour to find out how to add a chapter. There is a TINY, innocuous +/- icon near the time line to add a chapter. That's it. No right-click add, or function on the menu bar.

The problem is the included burn engine, Movie Factory 2010, or some such name( I'm desperately trying to forget this POS ). First off, it takes 5 minutes to open, IF it opens. And GOD forbid you do ANYTHING while it is opening! Then after touching a few keys, it just freezes. This is a repeated occurrence! Then, it tried to get my Windows7 64bit system to install something called Pure HD to the registry (Do yourself a favor and if you ignore my warnings here, Google Pure HD, Corel, registry problems.) Of course, it can't install, because there is no disk, etc. Finally, after repeated trying to close the Pure HD install, I come to realize that this POS burn engine doesn't import the chapter points from X3! What irony, after looking for an hour to find out how do do it in X3. Now, theoretically you can put chapter points and a menu with Factory burn engine, but I never got far enough to see if it would burn. Freeze. Shut down. Freeze.

My system is a Core i-3, with 8Gb RAM, with 1/2 TB of free space, far beyond the system requirements for X3. And please don't tell me to empty my temp. files, disable internet security, stop screen-savers, etc. What, am I a moron?! Please don't waste your time. Corel should be ashamed for fostering this burn engine on us. Hopefully X4 is better, but I will never know. Amazon allowed the return. They are great.
