5.0 out of 5 stars Mosquito repellent bracelets

I bought these as an afterthought, thinking they might help when I had to go out quickly where there might be mosquitoes but didn’t have time to put on bug repellent. I wasn’t really sure they’d work or work very well. I’m pleasantly surprised. I went out for a walk the other night, didn’t have time for the repellent lotion, so slipped one of these on my ankle. I ended up meeting a friend at dusk and talking. My two friends started commenting on how it was getting “buggy” and swatting at their legs. I was totally fine. I am a mosquito magnet, so was very happy that apparently this bracelet on my ankle had saved me. This wasn’t a heavily infested area, but it did work for me. I’ve been wearing one of these around my ankle now for a while when I go for a walk (which is usually at dusk) and so far have been mosquito free - and I used to get bites all the time if I didn’t use some kind of bug repellent. Now it’s nice to know I can use one of these instead of putting all those chemicals all over my skin. I think I would use repellent in a heavily infested area, especially for ticks and other bugs though. I also think these would work well for young children who are out especially later in the day when the mosquitoes are out and it’s harder to find a safe bug repellent for very young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kept the mosquitos at bay

We recently went on a long camping trip hitting several national parks. We wanted to avoid being bit up by bugs, but also wanted to avoid having to douse ourselves in chemical filled bug spray repeatedly. These bracelets were pretty effective. I would usually put one on my wrist and one on my ankle. I had very few bites overall and in some spots the mosquitos were very thick and active.

In the evening, we would hang a few of these near our tent opening as well. It did seem to help repelling mosquitos from getting into our tent. Overall, I was happy with this product and would recommend them to anyone who doesn't like bug spray. They do have an odor, but not near as bad as bug spray.

4.0 out of 5 stars PLEASANTLY SURPRISED Keeps away tiny biting black bugs too!

I was pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of these mosquito repellent bracelets. I'm one of those people who bugs seem to love, good and bad. Along with the mosquitos we have these teensy-tiny black bugs that resemble fruit flies under a microscope. The problem is they bite and bite and bite, often going after sensitive facial areas around the eyes and nose, leaving itchy, sacs behind. After being bitten all day, some mornings I wake up with eyelids that are so swollen I can barely keep my eyes open. I'm small & the bracelets stretch quite a bit, so I'm able to wear them around my neck or like a headband, but they work as a pony tail holder too. I've been wearing one at the head or neck area and another on one ankle, but after a rainfall, I'll add a 3rd to my wrist. They really work, not 100%, but they make a big difference inside and out, for mosquitos and the teensy black biting bugs. I find they work well for the 1st day, but the bugs start biting more the 2nd day of wear, even if I seal them back up in their little package. Regardless, I'll be buying a bigger pack the next time around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective!!

I HATE having to wear bug spray. It's greasy and smells weird and sticky. But I am also a mosquito magnet. I am always looking for spray-free ways to keep the mosquitos off. I tried these first on my outdoor deck during a dinner and they seemed to work, but we also spray for bugs around our house so I wasn't sure how truly effective they were. Then, I took them to an outdoor concert on a muggy night, right at the time when the most bugs are out. I wore one band on my wrist and one on the opposite ankle. Friends, this mosquito magnet did not spot one single mosquito bite after the concert. Not. One. There were also plenty of gnats present, and while there were still a few that landed on me, it was significantly fewer than the people around us who were swatting away. I HIGHLY recommend these to anyone for whom, like me, the bugs have an unrequited love.

These bracelets work but with caveats. I got them because sometimes I want to take quick walks outside, but don't want to put on sticky big spray and have to shower 2x a day because of the spray. Enter these bracelets.

1st caveat: they fairly quickly decrease in efficacy, which makes me feel guilty for creating so much non compostable/recyclable waste relatively quickly. I have a neighbor with a swampy pool that causes a bunch of mosquitos in the neighborhood in the summer. Without the bracelets, I got 14 bites when going outside for 1 hour. With the bracelets (1st wear and one per limb), I got none.

2nd caveat: I have found that I need 1 bracelet per limb in order to avoid bites. For a nighttime Joshua tree stargazing outing with a friend, we each only put one on and both got bit up like crazy. Later, I gave the bracelets another chance. I put one on each elbow and one on each knee. Wore them and then put them back in the pouches for later use. No bites. Used them a 2nd and 3rd time with no bites, but got 4 bites today with the 4th use, which indicates they're at their effective end of life at around 3 or 4 wears.

Overall, they work if you make sure you have a little citronella bubble around you by putting one on each limb, but they generate a relatively large amount of waste for the amount of protection they provide, and the protection itself can be spotty. If your only goal is to not use chemical spray on your skin, these bracelets meet it. If your goal is solely to not get bit, spray might be a better choice.
