What more can you say about a product with 4.5 Stars and 1700+ reviews? There are some products that just make you giddy; this is one of them. It works flawlessly, anytime, every time. I've owned a ViAir 85P for about 2 years. I purchased it for a car emergency bag. It has saved my butt more times than I can count. I don't drive brand new cars that are two years old; I get my money out of cars and always end up driving cars that are 13+ years old. Likewise, I don't replace my tires every 20,000 miles either. So, my tires often seem to have a slow leak and can run with low pressure over time. I don't often notice this 'till I'm at work or away from the house.
The ViAir 85P inflates tires FAST! It is a 12 VDC compressor (with max 15A to 20A draw), or about 240 Watts (~1/3 HP) max. It's not a 220 VAC 8 HP shop compressor, so it won't inflate you tire in 5 seconds. But compared to all the other 12 V compressors, this thing is KING! The more powerful ViAir compressors pull too much current for a cigarette lighter (they must use alligator clips direct to battery). For convenience (i.e. cigarette lighter power), the 85P things cannot be beat!
We've all tried the $15 el-cheapo compressors. Those things are actually WORSE than NOTHING at ALL! They give you a false sense of security.
The el-cheapo compressors are not only sooo sloooow when inflating a tire (take FOREVER), but they degrade over time (seals go bad, hose rots, etc.). So just when you need them most, on a cold dark road in the middle of no where, they let you down. When your tire goes flat, you foolishly think, "No problem; I've got my awesome $15 compressor I purchased at Harbor Fraud". Then you find out you should have spent a few more bucks and got the ViAir 85P. Couple this little compressor with a $5 tire repair/plug kit, at you are covered for 95 % of all tire problems in an emergency.
I paid around $45 for this a couple of years ago and was tickled with it. I just bought a 2nd one for my other car and two additional units for Christmas gifts. On my recommendation, a co-worker and several friends also purchased these compressors and couldn't be happier. Now, you can often find this on Amazon considerably discounted from that price. It also now comes with a great little zipper bag to keep it in! This is a nice quality bag that you'll actually use, not just some afterthought that will disintegrate with a few months. The bag has an interior pouch for small items (tire plugs, etc.). The built-in pressure gauge is a nice touch and seems pretty accurate (agrees with some of my other gauges to within a few psi). The high-quality brass screw-on hose end is one of the best features of the 85P. It works flawlessly and is super easy to use, even for soccer-moms and the non-mechanically inclined. No more crappy "clamp on" plastic hose connectors like cheap 1970's bicycle pumps that just won't seal. The ViAir hose has a nice feel to it and is braided-cloth covered for durability. The 12V power cable is long enough to plug into the cigarette lighter and still reach all four tires, even on relatively large vehicles. ViAir does sell an extension hose if you need it for some reason. The body of the compressor holds an inflation needle for sports balls, etc. This compressor has some heft to it and feels heavy enough to impress you. I don't know that there's a single thing I would change about this compressor. You are buying perfection!
These also makes AWESOME gifts for people that are hard to buy for. From college/high-school students, to the business executive, house-wife, pro-mechanic, to Grandpa Jones, anyone would be pleased to receive this as a gift. And they will think of you next time it saves their butt and they don't have to ride home in the cab of a tow truck at night with a 300 lb gorilla they just met. I should also mention this (for those who think, "just put the spare tire on"). Up here in the north, spare tires are often mounted underneath vehicles. This means the retaining mechanism is exposed to salt roads in the winter and inevitably seizes up. I've seen two vehicles now where no amount of prying and praying would get the spare tire loose.
With the ViAir 85P and a cheap tire plug kit, you'll be on your way in 5 min (even on a cold winter road) without laying on your back on a snow/ice covered road in -15 F weather, trying to wrestle a spare tire loose. When putting a spare on, you also have the fun of breaking lug nuts loose, etc. Avoid the pain and buy this ViAir 85P compressor!
