About this item

AMAZON CHOOSES COLOR. NO BATTERIES or CALIBRATION.
MORE POWERFUL THAN THE COMPETITION: The StudPoP's unique design makes it much more SENSITIVE than ALL other magnetic stud finders, making it ideal for ANY construction type, including challenging surfaces like LATH & PLASTER and TILE.
DON'T BE FOOLED: All other magnetic stud finders only work on SHEETROCK. But the StudPoP will work on SHEETROCK, LATH, PLASTER and TILE!
FORGET ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC ONES: They depend on unreliable batteries and a clumsy calibration procedure and they almost NEVER work on LATH & PLASTER. Bottom line: most of them aren't very good at anything :(
FUN & EASY TO USE: The StudPoP makes stud finding FUN with its 1" diameter moving magnet that gives an audible click and a visual movement when a fastener is found. It doesn't get any easier than this!
PERFERRED BY OWNERS OF OLDER HOMES: Because of the way walls were done in the "olden days", the StudPoP is the go-to stud finder for folks with those IMPOSSIBLE walls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective

A very simple magnetic nail detector that works on plaster and lath. Its plastic indicator pops up when over a nail head in a stud. It does this well. It requires patience as you slide the dvice back and forth over the wall looking for strikes, but once you find one and work downward from it for another one or two, you've got your stud. My century old house has nonstandard inconsistent spacing between studs, so this process took a little longer and prompted some head scratching but worked.

Great product that works exactly as advertised. Granted, you could buy a generic magnet but I really like the pop design because you can see the magnetic pull wane as you move it side to side over a fastener, helping you to get a better idea of where to put your screws. I do wish they sold these in 2 or 3 packs that offered a little extra savings though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic For Finding Studs In Older Homes With Thicker Walls
Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2015
Finding a stud in an older 1940's home where the walls are lath and plaster and thicker than the more modern 1/2" to 3/4" thinner drywall was always a nightmare. We tried so many different electronic stud finders in the $25.00-$40.00 price range over the years, but none of them work properly when the walls are not an even sheet of thin drywall.

Our plaster and lath walls are not even in thickness, but rather 3/4" to over an inch thick in parts. The outside walls are even thicker being a cement type plaster over some actual layer of a cement type base. I purchased this Studpop magnetic stud finder based on the description that it will work on sheetrock (all studfinders work on this thin sheet), plaster (hardly any studfinders work on thicker plaster), lath and tile.

This great tiny super strong magnetic stud finder works and works well! Even on 1 inch thick cement type plaster, that little popper snaps straight up when it finds the stud. When the walls are this thick, it won't stick to the wall as it will when the walls are only 1/2" to 3/4" thick, but that popper works perfectly! I only wish I would have found this Studpop, 3 stud finders ago- I could have saved all that wasted money.

With no batteries, no calibrations needed, no mistakes ever, this is the best stud finder money can buy- and the best part is you don't need much money! The only warning on the package is, that the magnetic field can be harmful to pacemaker wearers- and my husband has a pacemaker/defibrillator, so I do all the studfinding. The magnetic field is really strong to be able to find nails buried in our thicker old cement type plaster walls. This is the only studfinder you'll ever need and what I love best about this 5 STAR studfinder is that Studpop is made in the USA- American money going to Americans- if only all our products could be like Studpop!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for plaster walls

We live in a house built in the 40s and have plaster walls and it’s absolutely impossible to find a stud to nail things into this came highly recommended and we’ve really appreciated having it as we’ve decorated our house and fix things. It definitely does not 100% accurately find studs, but it’s way more helpful than a stud finder and can get you pretty close to where you need to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT PRODUCT!!

WOW!! I felt very silly buying this little plastic $10 product. I really needed a stud finder and was set to purchase one at $80, but at the last minute thought 'why not' and bought this little gadget just to see. Man was I surprised. Within 30 seconds of taking it out of the package I had found the first stud and the gadget was stuck on the wall. I actually laughed at how something so small, so giggle worthy, could do exactly what I needed it to do. I'm going to buy a bunch for stocking stuffers for Christmas.

03/11/15 -- This little gadget works by finding the nail/screw used to install sheetrock or wall board into the wall stud. It is not made to find the actual stud/board from one side to the other, or rather the width of the stud. This was all I needed to find, I didn't need to know where the actual board started and stopped from left to right. Once I found one nail/screw in a stud it was easy for me to shift over and locate the next stud as I know our older home was built with 12" stud centers, which means studs were placed every 12 inches. I think new homes are built on 16" centers.

If you need to find the actual edges of the wall stud, you will either need to rip part of the wall out or go ahead and invest in an electronic stud finder. They work by finding the density difference between nothing/dead air behind the sheetrock, or just insulation for example, then locate the changes in the density of the wood. Something like that. I think there is also new technology out there now that actually works like a radar to find the exact stud from edge to edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works on lathe and plaster walls
Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024
This is the only stud finder I have found that works on lathe and plaster walls. No batteries needed and made in the USA. I have two houses with lathe and plaster walls built in 1883 and 1939 and a pile of battery powered stud finders that never found a single stud. I found a stud in under a minute with this tool.

Sadly the plaster walls in my near 100 year old house defeated this stud finder as they do every one I have tried. The search continues.

I'm sure it works fine on regular drywall...it's definitely magnetic and is currently being used as a fridge magnet.
